War Horse was a big winner at the 65th Annual Tony Awards ceremony presented in New York City on June 12. Originally staged by the United Kingdom's National Theatre, War Horse won the Tony Award for Best Play. Set during World War I, War Horse uses both human actors and life-size horse puppets to tell the story of a boy and his horse as the latter is sent to the trenches.
War Horse was adapted by Nick Stafford from Michael Morpurgo's novel, which has also been made into a movie directed by Steven Spielberg which opens in December.

War Horse won four other Tony Awards, including Best Sound Design, Lighting Design and Direction of a Play for Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, as well as a special Tony Award for the work of the Handspring Puppet Company.

War Horse is mounting a major national tour and will rehearse and tech the upcoming production for two weeks at Boise's Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts prior to presenting three previews for the public that are including in the 2011-2012 Fred Meyer Broadway in Boise Subscription Season.

"Five Stars-War Horse is spell-binding, theatrical magic!" -New York Daily News

"Theatrical Magic!" -The New York Times.

Described as "...so exhilarating that it makes you rejoice to be alive... Its sheer skill and invention are simply awe-inspiring" by The Times of London, War Horse is a powerful and imaginative drama set at the outbreak of World War I in the English countryside and also the fields of battle in France and Germany. Joey the horse has been sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. In a tale that the NY Daily News said is "Epic, intimate, and compels you to hold your breath with anticipation," Joey is caught in enemy crossfire and ends up serving both sides before landing in no man's land. Albert embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. War Horse is filled with stirring music and songs, and at the heart are life sized puppets which bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on stage.
