The Guthrie Theater Announces DISCOVER SHAKESPEARE Contest

The Guthrie Theater today announced "Discover Shakespeare," a video contest for ages 14-18 tied into the Guthrie WorldStage presentation of Propeller's production of Twelfth Night running from February 27-April 6, 2013. The contest will begin September 14, with a submission period ending December 31 and a winner announced in February, 2013. The winning entrant's school will receive a video camera courtesy of National Camera Exchange.

"Shakespeare is at the very core of our mission," says Guthrie Director of Artistic Relations Sheila Livingston. "We're always thinking of ways to engage young people in Shakespeare's deeply rewarding work, and it's our hope that this contest will engage and spark young imaginations-maybe even in unexpected directions."

Submitted videos must tell some aspect of the story of Twelfth Night, and must be between three and five minutes long. There are no restrictions on how the videos are produced, and mediums can include live action or animation. Students can depict the story with as few or as many actors as they wish, and in any physical setting or time period. Students should submit their videos by e-mailing their YouTube video link to Completed videos can also be mailed to the Guthrie on a compact disc (Attention: Discover Shakespeare). In either case, an educator sponsor will be required. A panel of three judges will determine the winner.

Prizes will include a volume of Shakespeare plays donated to the school library of each contestant entry while supplies last. In addition, the winning entrant's school will receive a video camera courtesy of National Camera Exchange as well as 50 free tickets (in honor of the Guthrie's 50th anniversary) to the Shakespeare Classic performance of Twelfth Night on March 24, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. on the Guthrie's Wurtele Thrust Stage. The winning video will be showcased 30 minutes before the Shakespeare Classic, and the top four videos will be featured on the Guthrie's website through the run of Twelfth Night
