Parabelo
Dança Sinfônica

In a world where the speed of information is producing an increasingly homogeneous landscape, Grupo Corpo stands out for having developed a signature of its own. With a stark, vibrant, primitive, and tough artistic identity, the renowned company combines the minimalism of Philip Glass, the urban sounds of Arnaldo Antunes, the African delicacy of Jo?o Bosco, and a touch of Wisnik and Caetano Veloso to create a diverse, distinctive company character. Since 1975, Grupo Corpo has performed in countless countries across the world.

The company kicks off the evening with Parabelo. Created in 1997, the piece pairs high-octane ballet with an explosive finale that consistently leaves audiences swooning. Taking inspiration from the Brazilian countryside coupled with a contemporary soundtrack, Parabelo is, what choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras claims, the "most Brazilian and regional" of all his creations. An elegant mix of hip swaying, feet stamping, and devotional chants, Parabelo creates an intense and exciting ballet experience not to be forgotten.

The company will also perform Dança Sinfônica, or "Symphonic Dance," showcasing the best works from the group's repertoire and celebrating the richness and variety of their colorful 40-year history. The work was created in 2015 and is based on the concept of memories, with the theme proposed by artistic director Paulo Pederneiras. In it, choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras brings back his best representations of the entire vocabulary of movement from the company's history. Set against a backdrop of over a thousand photographs from the company's past and an evocative score combining original works with classical favorites, this piece is said to be "colorful, rhythmic and always looking forward," (Houston Chronicle).
