Northrop announces its free 2017 Music on the Plaza outdoor concert series, featuring acts from around the Twin Cities every Wednesday from June 7 through August 16 (and a bonus concert on Monday, August 7) at noon on Northrop Plaza.

With eleven unique local acts, Northrop's Music on the Plaza summer concert series provides entertainment for people of all ages. The series includes music ranging from reggae to R&B, Motown, Jazz, and more, each week will bring something new.

The series kicks off on June 7 with the Havana Gypsies, who bring a modern twist to salsa music. The following week, Funktion Junction will take us through classic tracks from the glory days of Motown, Disco, Funk, and R&B. Dan Newton's Café Accordion Orchestra's have an eclectic sound and expressive abandon that originated from a style Newton described as "faux Parisian elevator music." On June 28 Switched at Birth performs their acoustic, Americana set filled with Bluegrass, Folk, Blues, Country, Cajun, Irish, and Rock & Roll.

After a hiatus for the week of Independence Day, Music on the Plaza returns on July 12 with Dan Israel, one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters in the Twin Cities. Following him on July 19 is Innocent Reggae Band bringing their sound of summer to Northrop's audiences. We're excited to host Rio Nido on July 26and their distinctive vocal jazz sound. Becky Thompson and Old School will bring a classic country, swing, and rockabilly style to our stage on August 2.

As a special bonus concert, Northrop celebrates the U of M Marching Band with The Tarnished Brass, the country's longest running brass ensemble, comprised entirely of U of M Marching Band alum on Monday, August 7, the only Monday performance in the series. The Gentlemen's Anti-Temperance League brings smoky rhythms and sizzling leads of Prohibition Swing into the 21st century with their performance on August 9. The final performance of the summer will be by Orkestar Bez Ime with the sounds of Eastern Europe that "will prompt listeners to tap their toes" on August 16.

All concerts are free and open to the public, held on Northrop Plaza. In case of rain, concerts will be held inside Northrop. See below for the full list of events and dates!
