First Stage presents a folk-rock musical for all ages in the regional premiere of U: BUG: ME. Life isn't easy when you're a bug. Just ask Pico the Fly. He gets bullied by a horsefly; his caterpillar girlfriend's parents don't approve of her dating a fly, and when his best friend tells him to "shoo" - Pico decides it is time to leave the yard. With the help of Tavo and Olive - two hilarious cockroaches and a poisonous centipede Keno, Pico discovers a new attitude about friendship and love. His triumphant return will teach all species a lesson about what it means to be a friend. The "Ant-Hill Band" - comprised of cast members - provides live music to accompany the musical's alternately hilarious and touching, folk rock songs.

"While this is a great show for our younger audience members, teens have really responded to the music - and the issues of friendship and first relationships," said Jeff Frank, First Stage artistic director and director of this production. " It is genuinely a show that the entire family can, and should, share. The characters may be bugs, but their struggles are very human," continued Frank.

This production is the regional premiere of U: BUG: ME, an original folk rock musical by Jeremiah Clay Neal, an up and coming playwright and performance artist from Tempe, Ariz., whose original musical U: BUG: ME made its world premiere to positive reviews at the Coterie Theatre in Kansas City last spring.

"U: BUG: ME received tremendous praise to our sold-out audience when we presented it during our New Play Workshop in 2008," reflected Jeff Frank. "We anticipate the same success with audiences when it makes its premiere next month," continued Frank.

Director Jeff Frank has been First Stage's artistic director since February 2003. Previously he had served as education director/associate artistic director. Jeff is a native Wisconsinite who earned a BFA in theater from UW-Whitewater and went on to the University of Utah, earning an MFA in child drama. Over the past 13 seasons Jeff has directed many First Stage productions, including THE THIEF LORD, THE NEVERENDING STORY, SLEEPING BEAUTY, Tom Sawyer, THE HOBBIT, A MIDNIGHT CRY, PERSEUS BAYOU, A CHRISTMAS STORY and THE GIVER. Jeff currently serves on the Board of Directors for Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA)/USA, the national service organization promoting the power of professional theatre for young audiences.
