FOR NEW WORKS

MIAMI MADE's Mission is to Nurture Local Artists

with Ongoing Creative and Commissioning Support

PROPOSAL DEADLINE: FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 2010 AT 5PM

MIAMI, FL March 11, 2010 - The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County's commissioning program MIAMI MADE, which has been supporting the work of local artists since 2005, is calling for new proposals from South Florida artists interested in extending the boundaries of the performing arts by creating, writing, composing, or choreographing a new work that may be supported by and presented as a workshop at the Arsht Center during the 2010-2011 Miami Made Weekend.

Artists living and working in South Florida are invited to submit proposals for new works in any area of the performing arts, including mixed media, perhaps works that extend beyond current artistic practices and incorporate new technology. Projects may be of any scale and suitable for performance either indoors or outdoors. In developing their concepts, artists should take into account the range of venues and alternative spaces at the Center (visit www. arshtcenter.org/tech for details).

THE PROPOSAL DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 2010 AT 5PM.

For guidelines, please go to www.arshtcenter.org/miamimade or contact miamimade@arshtcenter.org or call the MIAMI MADE Hotline: (786) 468-2094.

"By bringing the work of South Florida's most creative minds to the Adrienne Arsht Center stage, we continue to redefine the traditional boundaries of the performing arts and expand the repertory of works to be performed and enjoyed by future generations of artists and audiences," said Scott Shiller, Executive Vice President of the Adrienne Arsht Center.  The MIAMI MADE commissioning project serves to encourage, enhance, and expand the reach of multi-disciplinary, groundbreaking work created and performed in our local Miami community."

In conjunction with the call for proposals, the Arsht Center's Education & Outreach Department will offer writing and presentation seminars in the spring of 2010, prior to the proposal deadline, for artists who wish to enhance their writing skills and performance proposals.

This summer, the Arsht Center will select several of the proposals submitted for further creative development, including ongoing guidance from the Arsht Center's artistic staff, and opportunities to participate in think tank sessions with other arts professionals. From this selected group of artists, projects will then be chosen for commissioning, additional development supported by the Center, and possible presentation.

Miami Made has been nurturing local Miami artists of all genres since 2005.  The festival vision and mission is wide in scope, and includes commissioning, developing, educating, workshopping, and presenting new work. Over the past five years, works in all disciplines have been selected for various stages of development. While all were reflective of the vibrant and extraordinarily imaginative arts scene that informs South Florida, several works have since been developed into full pieces. Cabaret Unkempt premiered at the Arsht Center during its inaugural 2006-2007 season. Refugee, Flock, and Miami Libre were presented during the 2007-2008 season. During the 2008-2009 season, the Arsht Center hosted the premiere of 1,000 Homosexuals and provided funding for Rosie Herrera's Various Stages of Drowning, which was presented at the American Dance Festival in North Carolina in 2009.  The 2008-2009 season also included the workshopping of a work-in-progress by Desmond Child, Cuba Libre, and the showcase presentation of three new multi-media works-in-progress, Hilo; Good, God, Go; and Model City. Following the success of Ms. Herrera's first Miami Made installment, the Center was pleased to partner with American Dance Festival to commission a second work, Dining Alone, which will premiere in July 2010 at the American Dance Festival. In 2010, the Center also commissioned two new original plays by Miami playwright, Michael McKeever.

The Arsht Center's commitment to new work also extends beyond the Miami community, to support artists whose work may originate outside of South Florida.  This spring the Arsht Center makes its Broadway debut as one of the producers of THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a new musical starring two-time Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth as Gomez and Morticia Addams.  Camp Kappawanna, a new musical by Lisa Loeb and Marco Ramirez, is currently in development with support from the Arsht Center. Additionally, the Center is providing artistic guidance for a major theatrical production, The Aluminum Show, which will premiere in the Ziff Ballet Opera House this summer. Rock Odyssey, a children's educational full-scale musical piece inspired by Homer's Odyssey, will also premiere in the Knight Concert Hall in the spring of 2010, when over 25,000 fifth graders from Miami-Dade County come to the Center to see this production for free.
