TheatreZone Opens Season 7 with Musical Comedy

Audience members compete in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

TheatreZone, Naples' Equity theatre group in residence at the G&L Theatre, opens its seventh season with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2010.

"Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime," explains TheatreZone founder and artistic director Mark Danni.

"An unexpected aspect of the show is that four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters," he adds.

The show's Tony Award winning creative team created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time.

Conceived by novelist Rebecca Feldman with additional materials by Jay Reiss, with lyrics and music by William Finn, the show won Tony Awards in 2005 -- one for Best Book (Rachel Sheinkin) and another for the Best Featured Actor (Dan Fogler). Spelling Bee premiered on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre on April 15, 2005 and closed on January 20, 2008 after 1,136 performances and 21 previews on Broadway.

Sponsored by Moorings Park, Spelling Bee opens December 1 and runs 10 performances until December 11, 2010.

About TheatreZone

In 2005, non-profit TheatreZone was born with the intent to bring live professional theatre to Southwest Florida in an intimate setting. Co-founders, Artistic Director Mark Danni, and his wife, actress/choreographer Karen Molnar, shared a vision and a passion to employ professional Equity actors and produce innovative productions of classic "lost treasures of Broadway."

Operating under the guidelines of the Actors' Equity Association (AEA), TheatreZone is in residence and performs in the charming 250-seat G&L Theatre, housed on the magnificent campus of The Community School of Naples, one block north of Pine Ridge Road, at 13275 Livingston Road.

Season 7 productions include Company (Jan. 5-15, 2012); Little Women (March 8-18, 2012) and The Boyfriend (May 3-13, 2012).

Season tickets (four shows) range from $172 - $192 and individual seats cost $43 - $48 plus a $2 per ticket fee. A mini series (3 shows) and group rates are also available.
