Palm Beach Dramaworks
Announces New Endeavor
"Master Playwright Series"
featuring
All My Sons * A Doll's House * Three Tall Women

Begins October 29th

West Palm Beach's only resident professional theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks is proud to announce a new endeavor entitled the "Master Playwright Series," sponsored by Oasis Outsourcing, Inc.  The Master Playwright Series, beginning in October and running through April, is scheduled in three segments, devoting two evenings to each playwright.  Scenes from various plays as well as full staged readings will be presented including: "All My Sons" by Arthur Miller, "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen and "Three Tall Women" by Edward Albee.  In addition to the readings, the evenings will invite audience participation, discussion and an overview of the work and themes. All performances are free, but space is limited and reservations are necessary.

The "Master Playwright Series," was developed as part of the Dramaworks' educational department. Three young theatre artists will participate as directorial assistants for each of the productions. The students will work side by side with a professional director and participate in research and preparation associated with the overview of selected works by the individual playwright.

The first of the three segments will be devoted to Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Arthur Miller.  "The Men of Miller," a series of scenes from various Miller plays, will be presented on October 29th followed by a staged reading of "All of My Sons" on December 3rd.  Tony Award winner "All My Sons," written in 1947, centers around the Keller family who is dealing with the turmoil of a son lost in the war and a dreadful crime that has been concealed for years.   Morality, responsibility and the American dream are examined and questioned in this thought provoking play.

"The Women of Ibsen" will follow on January 7th with a reading of "A Doll's House" on February 4th.  Henrik Ibsen, often referred to as the "father of modern drama," challenged the Victorian beliefs and values of his time, bringing into question the illusions that audiences had of conditions of life and moral issues.  "A Doll's House," written in 1879, one of Ibsen's most famous plays, was highly controversial when first published.  It calls into question the traditional roles of men and women in a marriage and in a complete break with convention, ends with a wife leaving her family.

Segment three will highlight the work of Edward Albee.  On March 3rd scenes from his plays will be performed as part of "The World of Albee" followed by a reading of "Three Tall Women" on April 7th.  Albee's works often examine the human condition, mixing theatrics with sharp dialogue.  "Three Tall Women" tells the story of three women, A, B and C, each being a younger version of A who, now in her nineties, reflects on her life with happiness, regret, satisfaction and bitterness.  This autobiographical work, by Albee's admission, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1994.

Palm Beach Dramaworks is a non-profit, professional theatre and is a member of the Theatre Communications Group, the South Florida Theatre League, Florida Professional Theatres Association, Florida Theatre Conference, and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.

Performance times are as follows: "The Men of Miller" – Monday October 29th (7PM); "All My Sons" – Monday, December 3rd (7PM); "The Women of Ibsen" – Monday, January 7th (7PM); "A Doll's House" – Monday, February 4th (7PM); "The World of Albee" – Monday, March 3rd (7PM); "Three Tall Women" – Monday, April 7th (7PM).  All performances are free of charge.  Reservations are required and can be made by calling the box office at (561) 514-4042, open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, or visit their website at www.palmbeachdramaworks.org.  The theatre is located in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach, at 322 Banyan Boulevard, between Dixie Highway and Olive Avenue, Florida 33401.   Parking is offered across the street for a nominal fee, or in the City Garage on the corner of Olive Avenue and Banyan Boulevard for $1.00 per hour with the first hour free!
