Florida Rep Closes Season with Wacky Melodramatic Spoof

Florida Repertory Theatre announced the opening of the final show in its 2011-2012 season, The Mystery of Irma Vep, a funny, and fast-paced spoof of classic melodrama. Running May 4-20, with three nearly sold out discounted previews on May 1, 2, and 3, The Mystery of Irma Vep is two parts The 39 Steps, one part Jane Eyre, and four parts witty.

"This is a play I have wanted to produce for a long time," said Producing Artistic Director, Robert Cacioppo, "it takes its inspiration from all the classic melodramas, like "Wuthering Heights" and "Jane Eyre", but then turns them on their heads so creatively and so hysterically, that I know audiences will be truly amazed. Do not miss this one if you love to laugh!"

The Mystery of Irma Vep brings a whole host of gothic melodramatic characters to wacky life onstage – from sympathetic werewolves to Egyptian mummy princesses. As Lord Edgar Hillcrest and Lady Enid try to solve the mystery of Irma Vep, they find that life is anything but normal in their spooky English manor house. This rollicking parody is a hilarious and quirky Off Broadway sensation that the New York Daily News called “Lunatic fun that keeps you in stitches!”

The production stars two of Florida Rep's comic all-stars, Mark Chambers and Brad DePlanche - both of whom are making their fourth appearance with Florida Rep this season. Both actors were seen in Florida Rep's season opener and smash hit, Rumors, and the holiday classic, It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. DePlanche also appeared in Bedroom Farce, and Mr. Chambers had a star turn as Truman Capote in Florida Rep's Studio Theatre Series production of Tru.

Associate Artistic Director, Chris Clavelli (The Santaland Diaries, Black Tie), directs the production, and is joined by an expert team of designers, including set designer Richard Crowell (Red), lighting designer Matthew McCarthy (Sylvia), costume supervisor Roberta Malcolm (Rumors), sound designer Kate Smith (God of Carnage), and production stage manager, Janine Wochna (Red).

The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam plays May 1-20, with preview performances on May 1, 2, and 3. Regular performances are Tues. - Sat. at 8pm, with matinees on Wed., Sun., and selected Saturdays at 2pm with a 7pm twilight performance on Sun., May 6.
