Caldwell Theatre Announces 2010-2011 Season:  Originality is the Mandate

What do sensual dancers, unknown identities, and an unusual medical device all have in common?  They comprise Caldwell Theatre Company's highly original 2010-2011 season.

The year kicks off with a return of the enormously successful, and recipient of 8 Carbonell nominations, musical Vices: A Love Story.  The show, featuring some of the most original dancing ever seen on a South Florida Stage, was initially produced during the summer of 2009.  "I continued to hear the same lament from our subscribers which was, 'I didn't get a chance to see Vices...in the summer, when are you bringing it back.'  I called to see if we could bring our team back together, and we were good to go," said Clive Cholerton Artistic Director and director of Vices.

Following Vices: A Love Story is the Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times #1 show of 2009, Becky Shaw.  Loosely based on the story of Becky Sharpe, the play is a hilarious exploration of a first date gone terribly wrong and contains more surprises and twists and turns than an entire season of Law and Order.  Not surprising since Becky Shaw is written by the head writer, Gina Gionfriddo, of the long running crime show.  "Aside from the humor of the play, what I was drawn to was the degree to which I found myself asking, 'what is going to happen next?' continued Cholerton.  "Just when I thought I had a handle on the characters, I was taken in another direction.  It was truly an exhilarating ride."

The fourth play will be filled with the new play from the always original Sarah Ruhl (The Clean House, Dead Man's Cell Phone)  titled, In the Next Room or the vibrator play.   Fresh from its successful run at Lincoln Center in New York, Caldwell Theatre was one of the first regional theater's to gain the rights to produce the play.  "What will grab people's attention with this piece is its enormous heart," opined Cholerton.  In The Next Room... focuses on a doctor at the turn of the century who is experimenting with a new electrical device to treat women with a variety of anxiety related symptoms.  Not surprisingly, his patients continue to leave personal belongings behind to assure themselves an immediate second appointment.  "The play is indeed based on historical fact of the medical treatment of women at the time, but as is the case with any Sarah Ruhl play, you are taken into a world of heightened fantasy which has you engaged with these wonderful characters from start to finish.  I believe In The Next Room will be one of the lasting plays to come out of the 00's decade," concluded Cholerton.

The final play has been left open as Caldwell Theatre continues to look at new works and waits on producing rights for a number of new hit plays still running either on Broadway or off-Broadway.

"Clearly the season as a whole, fulfills Caldwell's mission of providing eclectic, diversified programming.  Stylistically, thematically, and artistically, our patrons will engage in wide spectrum of theatrical experiences." Cholerton summarized.  "Simply put, I wanted my second season to have my stamp on it which is; I want to present the most unique and original theatrical productions available to me."

2010-2011 Mainstage Season Schedule

Play #1:  A Musical

Vices: A Love Story Nov. 7 - Dec. 12

Music by Michael Heitzman, Ilene Reid, Everett Bradley, Susan Draus.  Story by Michael Heitzman, Ilene Reid

Back by Popular Demand. Fueled by innovative dancing, driven by distinct and eclectic music, and injected with an abundance of humor, Vices...proclaimed its originality every step of the way.  The Palm Beach Post declared it as the #1 show of 2009.  If you missed it the first time, or if, like many, you're dying to share it with friends, now is the final chance.

Play #2:  Psychological Comedy-2009 Pulitzer Prize Finalist

Becky Shaw  Jan. 2 -  Feb. 6

by Gina Gionfriddo

Becky and Max go out on a date.  The ultimate date from hell...or is it?  Becky is shaken from the experience and clings to Max for comfort...or is there more to her motives?  Max is more concerned with taking care of his adoptive mother and sister...or does more lurk beneath his motives?  Welcome to Becky Shaw, Gina Gionfriddo's (writer/producer of TV's Law and Order) wonderfully unpredictable play that will have you guessing at every turn and laughing during the journey.  The New York Times called it "as engrossing as it is ferociously funny, like a big box of fireworks fizzing and crackling across the stage from its first moments to its last."

Play #3:

TBA  Feb. 20 - Mar. 27

Play #4:  Romantic Comedy

In The Next Room (or the vibrator play) Apr. 10 - May 15

by Sarah Ruhl

A provocative, funny, touching and entertaining story about a young doctor and his wife. Dr. Givings is obsessed with the marvels of technology and what they can do for his patients. His wife, Catherine, is only a bystander in her husband's world - listening at the door from the next room as he treats his female patients. Dr. Givings is not sure exactly how the  vibrators help the women he treats - but they do keep coming back. The only woman whose problem is not helped by the doctor is his own wife who longs to connect with him - but not electrically.   The New York Times concluded, "In the Next Room" is a true novelty: a sex comedy designed not for sniggering teenage boys - or grown men who wish they were still sniggering teenage boys - but for adults with open hearts and minds."
