Lark Play Development Center Announces 2010 U.S./México Playwright Exchange

The Lark Play Development Center in collaboration with Mexico's Fund for Culture and Arts (FONCA) is pleased to announce The U.S./México Playwright Exchange Program. For the fifth year the Lark will host four playwrights from México and pair them with four American Playwrights for a ten day translation and development residency designed to foster a cross-cultural exploration through the creation of stage-worthy translations of new works from México; it also introduces the writers to New York's theater scene, industry leaders, and the Lark community. Public readings of these works will be presented on November 20 and 21 at the Lark Studio, followed by a closing night Celebración on November 22 at Repertorio Español. All events are free and open to the public.

This year's exchange includes The Tip of the Iceberg by Bea Carmina, translated by Caridad Svich, directed by Julian Mesri; Alaska by Gibrán Portela, translated by Migdalia Cruz, directed by Daniel Jáquez; They Say by Juan Carlos Vives, translated by Mariana Carreño-King, directed by Dominic D'Andrea; Two Dead Men and a Banjo by Mariana Hartasanchez, translated by Henry Guzmán, directed by Tamilla Woodard.

The 2010 U.S./México Advisory Committee includes Maria Alexandria Beech (playwright), Luis Castro (Executive Director, Time Warner Philanthropic Initiatives), Migdalia Cruz (playwright), Henry Godinez (Associate Artistic Director, Goodman Theatre), Daniel Jáquez (Calpulli Danza Mexicana), Marléne Ramírez-Cancio (Fulana and Hemispheric Institute), Debbie Saivetz (director), Caridad Svich (playwright), Andrea Thome (U.S./México Playwright Exchange Program Director), Jose Luis Valenzuela (Executive Director, Latino Theater Company), Raul Zorilla (Executive Director, Mexican Cultural Institute).

This program is a collaboration between the Lark and Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (Mexico's National Fund for Culture and Arts) with support from The Mexican Cultural Institute of New York, and City of New York Department of Cultural Affairs. A laboratory for new voices and new ideas, the LARK PLAY DEVELOPMENT CENTER provides playwrights with indispensable resources to develop their work.
