The NewWorks@TheWorks Play Competition was established in 2013 to renew our focus on cultivating new and original theatre. Playwrights are invited to submit their scripts and a panel of local directors, actors, and designers select six plays to be a part of a staged reading series. Of those six plays, two are chosen to be fully produced as world premiers for our POTS@TheWorks 2015 - 2016 season.

The NewWorks staged readings will feature the following shows:

Byhalia, MS by Evan Linder - "A black child is born to white parents in Byhalia, Mississippi, throwing the lives of their family and friends into turmoil." Evan Linder is a local Memphian and co-playwright of 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche.

The Missing Three by Alan Goodson "This farcical show throws together an improbable group of individuals as they search for Mozart's three missing bassoon concertos, and end up finding what is missing in themselves." READING DATE- September 28th, 7:00 PM @ Playhouse on the Square

Moonvine by Teri K. Feigelson - "A Southern gothic tale comes to life as family members on a delta farm try to cope with the past, present, and uncertain future." Teri Feigelson is a winner from last year's NewWorks @TheWorks competition.

READING DATE - October 4th, 2:00 PM @ Playhouse on the Square

Uncle Bobby '63 by Harold Ellis Clark - "Set in a single night in New Orleans in 1963, three young civil rights workers have to decide the most effective response to hatred: violence or nonviolence." Harold Ellis Clark is a winner from last year's NewWorks@TheWorks competition.

READING DATE- October 5th, 6:00 PM @ Playhouse on the Square

By the Shores of Alluvtoomey by Michael McGoldrick - "A wildly impractical father has squandered away all of his money, and now his cynical daughter has to save their family home." A comedy about how love is intimately connected to the imagination.

READING DATE- October 11th, 2:00 PM @ The Circuit Playhouse

The Baby Game by Michele Aldin Kushner - "Two couples - one straight, one gay - are desperate for parenthood. Each couple is promised the same baby by one young birthmother. What ensues is an emotional battle for the unborn child." READING DATE - October 12th, 7:00 PM @ The Circuit Playhouse
