British conductor Mark Wiggleworth makes his MPO debut with Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a composition of enduring popularity in which Elgar sketched witty musical portraits of his friends and relatives. Dvo?ák’s Cello Concerto, one of the greatest masterpieces for cello, is a work of soaring lyricism, dramatic conflict, heartfelt emotion and amazing beauty. Excerpts from Wagner’s warm-hearted opera Die Meistersinger provide a majestic closing to a magnificent programme.
