Penobscot Theatre Company is combatting Mother Nature with a tried-and-true remedy for subzero temperatures: laughter. Guys on Ice will have its Maine premiere at the Bangor Opera House, January 29 through February 15. Dominick Varney, who has delighted the theatre's audiences in many comedic roles, will direct this heartwarming, manly musical, starring Ben Layman, Matt Madore, and Scott Raymond Johnson.

Audiences will join two long-time pals in their home away from home, a ramshackle ice-fishing shanty, as they plot to appear on a popular cable TV fishing show; scramble to protect their beer from Ernie the Moocher; and pass the time swapping jokes, playing cards, talking about women - and occasionally breaking into song and dance. The production, which premiered in Wisconsin, gained national applause through a run on National Public Radio. With such unlikely yet irresistible crowd-pleasers as "Ode to a Snowmobile Suit" the appeal of this fish tale cannot be exaggerated!

The design team includes Chez Cherry (scenic), Scout Hough (lighting), Kevin Koski (costumes), Brandie Rita (sound), and Meredith Perry (properties). Larrance Fingerhut is music director.

Preceding the first public preview, Penobscot Theatre Company is proud to offer a complimentary performance of Guys on Ice, especially for our neighbors affected by the recent mill closure in Bucksport. The special performance is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, at 7:00 pm, at the Bangor Opera House. This offer is available exclusively to former mill workers and their families. To reserve seats, eligible parties must email special@penobscottheatre.org and provide their names and the number of seats they wish to claim. "Understanding our limits in mitigating the serious challenges at hand," said Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport, "we hope a night on the town will succeed in lifting spirits and lightening hearts."

Guys on Ice is produced in partnership with Groth & Associates, Getchell Brothers Ice, and Wells Fargo Advisors. The theatre gratefully acknowledges the generous support provided throughout the season by the following sponsors: The Bangor Daily News, Blueberry Broadcasting, Canyon Networks, The Charles Inn, Darling's, The Maine Arts Commission, The Maine Edge, Downtown with Rich Kimball, ZONE Radio, and WLBZ Channel 2.
