Good Theater Announces Received Grants

Good Theater the professional theater company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center has received two grants for their upcoming production of ACT ONE. The grants received are from the Maine Community Foundation Theater Fund and from the Davis Family Foundation.

ACT ONE will receive its regional theater debut at Good Theater opening April 6 and running through May 1. ACT ONE by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service. ACT ONE was on Broadway in the winter and spring of 2014. It received five Tony Award nominations including one for Best Play. The Good Theater production will be first production since the Broadway run.

ACT ONE is a sweeping tale of young Moss Hart and his early beginnings on his way to a Broadway career. The Good Theater production will employ 14 actors playing 60 roles. It will be the largest play ever presented in Good Theater's history. Brian P. Allen, Good Theater's Artistic Director, directs the production. His unique vision will bring this story of Broadway and humble beginnings to life.

Moss Hart is the famed author, playwright and director. He began is Broadway career by writing with George S. Kaufman such hits as ONCE IN A LIFETIME, THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER and YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU (Pulitzer Prize winner). He directed the original productions of MY FAIR LADY and CAMELOT. As a solo playwright he wrote LIGHT UP THE SKY which Good Theater presented in its 208-2009 season. Hart wrote his autobiography, ACT ONE, in 1959 where it spent an entire year on the New York Times Bestseller List.

The Maine Community Foundation is a statewide nonprofit that helps people invest charitable resources in the future of Maine. Their giving does good within their communities and often throughout the state.

The Davis Family Foundation is a public charitable foundation established by Phyllis C. Davis and H. Halsey Davis of Falmouth, Maine, to support educational, medical and cultural/arts organizations located primarily in Maine.
