Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola has been a dancer with the core ensemble of Sasha Waltz & Guests ever since she founded the company in 1996. He has appeared on the Grand Théâtre stage many times with productions such as My Dearest My Fairest, Colours may fade, Matsukaze and the more recent Rite of Spring which Sasha Waltz reimagined last season.
In Vaivén he joins forces with Antonio Ruz for a very personal project where both choreographers and performers assume and exchange the roles of director and interpreter. Despite each solo being in itself an independent entity it is in the experience of the journey from one solo to the other that both artists hope to find layers of interpretation as in a network of infinite positive and negative poles.
Antonio will direct Juan Kruz in a solo where the body becomes the focus and the obsessive medium of expression. In an extreme austerity of means, the solo wishes to be a surrender of the body to exhaustion, a search of the deepest emotion by bringing the body to a physical state of exaltation and intoxication, of abandonment to excess.
In Antonio’s solo, the voice takes the central point. Through a repertory of songs from eclectic periods and style featuring themes such as eradication, uprooting, exile, farewell and longing will be developed through a character – a nomad or a wanderer. The story is told not just by the songs and their lyrics, but above all by the way these melodies are performed by Antonio. Although there will be a voluntary reduction of the choreographic range and vocabulary, the body maintains its integrity as the element and medium of narrative and of expression.
