REDCAT Announces Fall 2009 Season

Mark Murphy, executive director of REDCAT (the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater), today announced programming for REDCAT's 2009 Fall Season. REDCAT's seventh season introduces Los Angeles to some of the most dynamic and influential developments in performing, visual and media arts from around the world.

"I'm excited to unveil our most international and ambitious season yet," announces Executive Director Mark Murphy. "Influential artists and thinkers from over 25 countries are bringing our theater, gallery and lounge to life with provocative new work exploring our rapidly changing world. They are confronting vital issues, inventing new artistic forms, challenging traditions and inspiring audiences. They are influential cultural leaders from around the world--as well as emerging artists who are sure to have great future impact."

Murphy continues, "At this very important moment in global history, artists and contemporary culture are more important than ever. I'm thrilled that record-breaking crowds have been filling REDCAT so far this year, taking us up on our invitation to play a role in the larger international dialogue about the evolution of contemporary art forms."

To encourage visitors to come often and bring friends, REDCAT is keeping its ticket prices low and gallery events free. Tickets for most events go on sale through the box office Tuesday, August 11, 2009.

With an expansive reach into today's wealth of contemporary art from around the world, REDCAT's Fall Season promises to engage audiences with an abundance of exhilarating premieres, including REDCAT's newly commissioned Under Polaris, a multimedia work by the collaborative team Cloud Eye Control, which exemplifies REDCAT's dedication to nurturing new work by Los Angeles artists. The piece is co-commissioned by REDCAT in partnership with the National Contemporary Art Center's Network, the Portland Institute for Contemporary Arts and the National Performance Network.

In a special February, 2010 engagement, celebrated New York performance ensemble The Wooster Group continues its four-year series of REDCAT residencies with a new re-staging of their acclaimed 1983 Reagan-era work North Atlantic, a satiric music and dance infused event that looks at the role of the military and the growing influence of technology in American culture during the later stages of the Cold War. Written for the group by James Strahs and directed by Elizabeth LeCompte, the work features Wooster Group members Ari Fliakos, Scott Shepherd, Kate Valk with Frances McDormand, winner of an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1996 for Fargo. Performances will take place February 10 through 21, 2010.

THEATRICAL EVENTS FROM THE WORLDS OF REALITY AND FANTASY

REDCAT's captivating theatrical events this fall feature a four-week run and West Coast premiere of Arias with a Twist, a stupendously madcap, brilliantly imagined fantasy, where the soaring song stylings of chanteuse Joey Arias are surrounded by an eye-popping theatrical wonderland conjured by a team of six puppeteers directed by the legendary Basil Twist; the US premiere of the award-winning Belarus Free Theatre's Discover Love, a gripping original drama based on the true story of dissident Irina Krasovskaya and her husband Anatoly; and the world premiere of Under Polaris, the latest mix of projected animation, live theater and electronic music by young Los Angeles-based multimedia ensemble Cloud Eye Control.

DANCE PREMIERES BY LEGENDS OF YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Fall dance highlights include Maybe Forever, a theatrical reverie on love's promise lost, by celebrated American choreographer Meg Stuart who, according to The New York Times "does not visit these shores enough..." and Viennese independent choreographer Philipp Gehmacher; Beautiful Me, a compelling solo work by South African choreographer and dancer, Gregory Maqoma, fusing precision, lyrical warmth and humor in a heartfelt reflection on what it means to be a postmodern African dance artist today; and a full-scale reproduction of Anna Halprin's landmark of postmodern dance, parades & changes, replays featuring music performed live by Morton Subotnick.

MUSICAL ADVENTURES CELEBRATING UNDISCOVERED TREASURES

Reaching into the depths of eastern and western music traditions, AH! Interactive Opera, No-Opera, brings together pioneer of experimental music David Rosenboom and an exceptional ensemble of ten composer-performers from across the globe for an interactive experience to which the audience can participate and contribute; Los Angeles-based web radio DUBLAB celebrates their 10th anniversary with psych-folk singer Linda Perhacs, who will perform for the first time ever music from her 1970s album Parallelogram; Mexican-American pianist Ana Cervantes makes her Los Angeles debut; and Gamelan Burat Wangi returns to REDCAT with an ensemble of 25 gamelan players and 14 dancers to enact an exquisite Balinese adaptation of the Ramayana, the ancient Hindu epic brought to Bali from India more than a millennium ago.

AN IMMERSIVE FILM/VIDEO SERIES WITH INTERNATIONAL SCOPE

Continuing its bold and provocative scope, REDCAT's film/video series features numerous Los Angeles and US premieres with post-screening discussions with the artists. Highlights include a projection performance by Alpert Award winner Bruce McClure; the Los Angeles premiere of Ulrike Ottinger's The Korean Wedding Chest; a rare presentation of Sun Xun's animation oeuvre; and a speciAl Halloween celebration featuring a two-night screening of one of the earliest and creepiest horror films--a masterpiece of German Expressionism--The Golem, accompanied by live music and a cast of ghouls directed by Brian LaBarton, best known as Beck's music director.

INSPIRING CONVERSATION EVENTS CONFRONTING TODAY'S ISSUES

Dedicated to lively civic discourse among artists, audiences, and the greater Los Angeles community, REDCAT's Conversation series continues with a caucus of influential architects dedicated to "supportive housing" solutions for the homeless in Los Angeles; a can't-miss reading celebrating the publication of an important new anthology of writing on film, Life As We Show It, by four of its award-winning contributors; and a conversation and screening focusing on the intersection of site-specific choreography and media with renowned choreographers Stephan Koplowitz, Joanna Haigood and David Rousseve.

VISUAL ART EXHIBITIONS HIGHLIGHTING THE PACIFIC RIM

REDCAT's commitment to presenting visual artists from the Pacific Rim is embodied in The Gallery at REDCAT's upcoming fall exhibitions. September 12 through November 18 The Gallery at REDCAT exhibits Mexico City-based artist Abraham Cruzvillegas' newly commissioned film shot in his childhood neighborhood of Ajusco, a district in the south of Mexico City founded by migrants who settled there in the 1960s on what was deemed uninhabitable land. Working with local, non-professional actors, the film's unconventional narrative format (with no dialogue) engages Cruzvillegas' interest in autoconscrucción (or self-construction) exploring economies of the makeshift, the recycled and handmade. November 19 through January 17, in collaboration with curator Hou Hanru of the San Francisco Art Institute, The Gallery at REDCAT presents the final presentation of the three-cycle project, Everyday Miracles (Extended). The exhibition brings together the work of seven remarkable artists, who poignantly reflect the dynamic shifts across Asia over the last 30 years. Everyday Miracles (Extended) seeks to expand upon discourses of feminism in Asia and beyond and explores the emergence of the extraordinary in art and the everyday.

REDCAT - THE ROY AND EDNA DISNEY/CALARTS THEATER

Opened by CalArts in 2003, REDCAT introduces diverse audiences, students and artists to the most influential developments in the arts from around the world, and gives artists in this region the creative support they need to achieve national and international stature.

REDCAT is the newest partner in an international network of adventurous art and performance centers, which together are playing a vital role in the evolution of contemporary culture. REDCAT is a center for experimentation, discovery and lively civic discourse.

THE GALLERY AT REDCAT

Each year, under the curatorial direction of Clara Kim, the Gallery at REDCAT produces five exhibitions; hosts two or three artist residencies; and publishes up to two catalogues a year (often, the first major monograph on the artist's work). The Gallery identifies significant emerging and mid-career artists worldwide who have not had exhibition opportunities in Los Angeles. REDCAT has presented projects with artists based in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, México City, Monterrey, São Paulo, Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Copenhagen, Berlin and Marseille, encouraging dialogue between artists based in Los Angeles and those working abroad and contributing to the city's growing role as an international arts hub.
