OCPA Studios - the Orange County Playwrights Alliance's full-length play reading series - wraps up OCPA's 2013 programming with the presentation of Whatever's Easy, a new drama by Eric Eberwein. Jenni Dillon directs. 50% of the box office proceeds from this event go to Theatre Out.

The Play

A father, a daughter, a slacker and a survivor cross paths one summer at a lakefront campground, each of them avoiding issues they're afraid to face. Peter is glimpsing his mortality and yearning selfishly for the freedom and hedonism he reveled in as a young man; his daughter Christina views his mid-life crisis as a pathetic second adolescence and wants him to support her as she faces the biggest dilemma she has ever known. Tav is taking a break from work and college, lighting up the occasional joint and beginning to realize that he doesn't know what to do with his life; his boss Janis worries that she has wasted hers after a legacy of living the wrong way. Over time, Janis and Tav get to know Christina and Peter - confronting them about the truths they have evaded while also recognizing the fears that paralyze their own lives. They come to realize that life is about doing the hard thing - a truth that cannot be avoided.

The Playwright

Eric Eberwein's plays include Great Western Wanderlust (winner, Las Vegas Little Theatre New Works Competition), The Diaries of David Kind (winner, Theatre Publicus Jury Prize for Dramatic Literature) and The Return Engagement (a 2012 finalist in Actors Theatre of Louisville's National Ten-Minute Play Contest). Eric's work has been produced at Santa Cruz Actors Theatre, the Hunger Artists Theatre Company and STAGEStheatre (CA), Las Vegas Little Theatre, FUSION Theatre Company (NM), the Coastal Empire New Plays Festival (GA) and WNEP Theater (Chicago). The Orange County Playwrights Alliance (OCPA) began on April 1, 1995 with an informal meeting in an oncologist's office in Anaheim. Since then, OCPA has become the fundamental group for playwrights in O.C., presenting staged readings and productions of plays at intriguing local theatres. Its playwrights have been produced across the U.S., and have won national and regional playwriting awards.

As a gay and lesbian theatre, Theatre Out presents works by gay and lesbian playwrights, as well as pieces about the gay and lesbian community, and strives to explore both the classics that shaped our history and the new works that are continuing to form, examine and reshape our culture. Theatre Out is passionate about telling the stories of the GLBT community with romantic comedies, intriguing musicals, thrilling mysteries, serious dramas and everything in between. Theatre Out fosters a creative environment open to all artists in the theatre community, and it fosters local playwrights by supporting groups such as OCPA.
