Schkapf
6/7-6/28/2014
Don your moustaches and throw on your dandy garb for an evening of not-so-innocent pranks and antics, vignettes and dreamlike incidents, as the St. Petersburg eccentric Daniil Kharms (re)meets ARTEL's unique brand of clownpunk. ARTEL is reviving and revamping its acclaimed Russian absurdist comedy. Experience why audiences are still talking about this show 4 years later! For those new to Mr. Daniil Kharms (1905-1942), here's a bit of info to quicken your inquisitiveness: Kharms was an early Soviet-era surrealist and absurdist poet, writer and dramatist, a post-modern artist before the term had any cultural currency. He exploded the conception of theatre as a literary representative, defining the rules of theatre not as dramatic but scenic. ARTEL ransacks the storehouse of Kharms, particularly his creative practice of sluchai (chance event), to propose its own poetics of illogical perspectives formulated for a new decade of theatrical hooliganism. Come to the show and dress to impress while enjoying yourself at a night of irrepressible theatre. Kharmsian time zone is circa 1920s/1930s. Wearing a moustache is highly recommended. Moustachioed persons will be rewarded with a cup of soup. Ladies with moustaches will be doubly rewarded.

HIGH STREET ARTS CENTER
5/30-6/29/2014
Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, THE PRODUCERS once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly "boffo" hit, winning a record twelve Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime For Hitler"), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends. With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (ANNIE) and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks , THE PRODUCERS skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an "equal opportunity offender!"

Two single strangers, left alone in their studio apartments on a Saturday night, pass their time with sweetly secret, unshared fantasies, never knowing that they're just a floor away from each other and the end of their lonely dreams. Originally conceived by director Norman Rene and playwright Craig Lucas (Prelude To A Kiss), this ingeniously-constructed "revusical"ť is told entirely through songs either written early in Sondheim's career (including numbers SATURDAY NIGHT) or cut from his groundbreaking Broadway musicals (A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, COMPANY, FOLLIES and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC). A must for Sondheim aficionados, this easily produced one-act musical is also perfect as a benefit, curtain warmer or second-stage production, as it can be played on virtually any existing set - or no set at all. Now Playing Onstage in Los Angeles - Week of 6/22/2014 ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (STONE)
Musical Theatre Village
5/30-6/29/2014
ANNIE GET YOUR GUN scored a bulls eye when it returned to Broadway in 1999, starring Bernadette Peters and sporting a revised libretto by Tony, Oscar and Emmy winner Peter Stone. As Newsday reported, Stone's revisions 'are sweetly ingenious, and the show is a dream.' Stone reshaped the 1946 book to create a Wild West show-within-a-show that frames the ageless 'Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better' love story of sharpshooters Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. Stone has added a secondary romance between the younger sister of Frank's bothersome assistant Dolly, and a boy who is (to Dolly's horror) part Native American. 'The book has been updated in ways that pass p.c. muster,' reported Time Magazine, 'without losing all the fun.' Joined to the new book, of course, is that amazing Irving Berlin score, featuring hit after hit after hit. 'Irving Berlin's greatest achievement in the theater,' wrote the New York Post, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN 'will always be a musical for the ages, one of the Broadway theater's enduring triumphs.'Music and Lyrics by Irving Berlin; Original Book by Herbert Fields & Dorothy Fields; As Revised by Peter Stone

Cupcake Theater
6/14-6/29/2014
World premiere solo show, Seven Seductions of Taylor Swift, opens at the Hollywood Fringe 7 female playwrights. Seven famous exes. 1 white actor. Acclaimed LA stage actor, Thaddeus Shafer, plays seven of Taylor Swift's famous guys in a satirical tale of love, innocence, power and douchebags. Directed by Amin El Gamal, Seven Seductions of Taylor Swift has its world premiere at the Hollywood Fringe Festival at midnight on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Cupcake Theatre in Hollywood. Seven emerging female playwrights wildly speculate on the very personal private moments of Taylor Swift's romantic history, writing scenes from the perspective of Joe Jonas (Caitlin Bower), Taylor Lautner (Nadia Vazquez), John Mayer (Joanna Horowitz), Cory Monteith (Lily Blau), Jake Gyllenhaal (Joanna Bateman), Conor Kennedy (Kit Steinkellner), and Harry Styles (Kari Lee). Before each scene, Jonny Taylor's brilliant projections cleverly incorporate real footage to provide context. While some might ask, "why should anyone care about Taylor Swift's relationships?" these seven playwrights believe that Taylor Swift is a part of a contemporary mythology (like Henry VIII or Marilyn Monroe were in their times), which is rich with themes of identity, celebrity, whiteness, maleness, blondeness and the inherent self-exploitation of social media in 21st century. Ultimately, though, this play is the story about a young woman growing up, coming into her own, and finding her own voice. Taylor is, dramaturgically speaking, the hero of her Seven Seductions, even though she is never on stage. This play began, as attempt to solve a problem. Before there was even a show, our actor, Thaddeus Shafer, became obsessed with these seven guys. Insisting that he had to 'tell their story,' Shafer began to act as these seven guys in his every day life; at home, on the street -- anywhere he went, so did Harry, or Joe, or John. Pushed to the brink, Shafer's fiance, playwright Kari Lee, enlisted the help of six other playwrights to help get this obsession out of her life and into a rehearsal room. The real life drama behind the making of this play can be seen on youtube, in the webseries 'Tad & Kari.' Produced with the generous help of indiegogo supporters, Seven Seductions of Taylor Swift has also been accepted into the New York International Fringe Festival and will make its New York premiere in August. Spanning the years from 1880 to 1927, this lyrical masterpiece concerns the lives, loves and heartbreaks of three generations of show folk on the Mississippi, in Chicago and on Broadway (and their life-long friends). The primary plot follows Magnolia, the naive daughter of the show boat captain, as she marries a gambler and moves with him to Chicago. His gambling continues as his debts compound, and soon he deserts her and their young daughter. A subplot concerns the potential arrest of Magnolia's selfless best friend on charges of miscegenation when it's discovered that she is mulatto, and her subsequent downward spiral into despair. The passing of time reunites Magnolia and her now-grown daughter with her family on the show boat as well as with her husband, who eventually returns offering a hopeful second chance at familial fulfillment.Music by Jerome Kern; Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Based on the novel

Now Playing Onstage in Los Angeles - Week of 6/22/2014 SWEENEY TODD
ACTORS REPERTORY THEATRE OF SIMI
6/7-7/13/2014
The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, SWEENEY TODD nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next.At the show's core is a challenging score of epic proportion with two tasty tour de force roles in Sweeney and his comic female accomplice Mrs. Lovett. Although it has been extremely popular with opera companies and in concert presentation, SWEENEY TODD is equally effective as an intimate chamber musical.

Now Playing Onstage in Los Angeles - Week of 6/22/2014 FOREVER PLAID
HANCOCK COLLEGE/PCPA
6/19-7/27/2014
FOREVER PLAID is one of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory. This deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950's on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was. Singing in the closest of harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with over-zealous precision, the "Plaids" are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950's.

Now Playing Onstage in Los Angeles - Week of 6/22/2014 THE PRODUCERS
SANTA MONICA THEATRE GUILD/MORGAN WIXSON THEATRE
6/27-8/2/2014
