No Doubt Collaborates with LA Phil's Composer Fellows and YOLA Musicians, 2/26

Four high school students participating in the LA Phil's Composer Fellowship Program will compose a four-movement piece inspired by songs by Grammy-winning rock band No Doubt. The complete piece will then be performed by the YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra in a free evening concert at Santee High School on Feb. 26. (No Doubt will not be performing.)

The four composer fellows - Daniel Allas, Tamzin Elliott, Phillip Golub and Aaron Ishibashi - each selected a No Doubt song to serve as the musical inspiration for each one of the four movements that comprise the final piece. The songs chosen are "Suspension without Suspense," "Rock Steady" and "Simple Kind of Life." Already immersed in a program that offers a rich palette of musical experience that includes working closely with renowned classical, jazz and new music artists, this is the first time that the fellows have taken the music of an acclaimed rock group as the inspiration for their compositions.

All members of No Doubt - Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal and Adrian Young - will attend a YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra rehearsal (at a date to be determined) to meet each of the composer fellows, observe rehearsal, listen to the new work inspired by their music, and participate in a Q&A session with the YOLA musicians and composer fellows.

Composer Fellowship Program

This innovative two-year program gives passionate young composers the tools and the freedom to shape the future of music. Private and group composition lessons, seminars presented by LA Phil musicians, and encounters with professionals in the field, propel Fellows to excellence. Students experience the creative process from start to finish with the help of accomplished composers. At the end of the process, these young composers have the remarkable opportunity to hear their works performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA)

Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) is the Los Angeles Philharmonic's initiative, supported by a network of stakeholders, to provide access to exceptional instrumental and orchestral education in order to promote youth development. The program and musical instruments are free to all participating students. Central to YOLA is the LA Phil's plan to build, with community partners, youth orchestras in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles. YOLA is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education system that nurtured Music Director Gustavo Dudamel. The YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, the first project of YOLA, is a partnership among the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, The Harmony Project, the EXPO Center and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The YOLA EXPO Center Youth Orchestra has empowered hundreds of students since its inception in 2007, and serves students ages 2-17 from more than 60 schools in its five-mile radius. In September 2010, the LA Phil launched the second YOLA site at HOLA: Heart of Los Angeles, an after-school community center in Lafayette Park. YOLA at HOLA will serve hundreds of students beginning with first and fourth graders, leading to the development of children and youth orchestras in the future.
