Los Angeles Opera Presents 1922 Horror Film NOSFERATU Featuring Live Performance of New Score by Matthew Aucoin

LA Opera will celebrate Halloween with two screenings of the 1922 silent classic Nosferatu, featuring a new score created by Matthew Aucoin, the company's new Artist in Residence. One of the greatest horror films ever made, the supremely creepy vampire thriller will be accompanied live by Mr. Aucoin conducting a chamber ensemble of musicians from the LA Opera Orchestra and soprano soloist Liv Redpath, a member of the company's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program. Presented as part of the company's Off Grand initiative, the screenings will take place on October 29 and 31 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel.

Drenched in the silvery shadows of German Expressionism, director F.W. Murnau's cinematic masterpiece stars Max Schreck as the pallid and deadly Count Orlok.

"The music of the Second Viennese School-Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Zemlinsky-was written around the same time the film was made, and I find it's a great aesthetic fit," said Mr. Aucoin. "My score is a collage (a Frankenstein monster, if you will) of orchestral and operatic music both by Second Viennese School composers and by earlier composers in that tradition. In addition, I've composed new music of my own and I'll be improvising certain scenes at the piano. With my improvisations, I'm engaging with a different tradition: in the early days of cinema, pianists often improvised along with silent films, and I look forward to letting my inner jazz pianist loose to provide musical commentary and atmosphere."

Murnau's 1922 silent classic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is as immortal as its iconic antagonist.
