DOMA Theatre Company Presents XANADU, 9/7-10/7

DOMA Theatre Company goes retro with Xanadu, the musical based on the 1980 cult film. With book by Douglas Carter Beane and music/lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, the magically winsome, over-the-top Broadway smash hit is set for a limited run, Sept. 7-Oct. 7, at the intimate MET Theatre in Hollywood.Hallie Baran directs, with choreography by Angela Todaro and musical direction by Chris Raymond.

The year is 1980 in Venice, CA and legwarmers and roller skates are, like, totally awesome! In this ingenious send-up of the Olivia Newton-John/Gene Kelly film (which in turn was based on Rita Hayworth’s 1947 film, Down to Earth), Greek muse Clio descends from Mt. Olympus to help struggling artist Sonny Malone achieve his dream of opening a roller disco. But there’s trouble in Olympian paradise when, disguised as Australian roller girl Kira, Clio falls in forbidden love with the mortal Sonny and risks eternal banishment to the underworld by her jealous and conniving sisters.

A hilarious, roller-skating musical phenomenon about following your dreams and believing in magic, Xanadu spins to an original hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar with classic feel-good songs like “Magic,” “All Over the World,” “Suddenly,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” and the title song, “Xanadu.”

Xanadu opened on Broadway in 2007, where it ran for over 500 performances and earned the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, a Drama Desk Award for Best Book, and Tony nominations for both Book and Musical.

The fourth production in DOMA Theatre Company’s ambitious 2012 season of Broadway musicals, Xanadu follows on the heels of the troupe’s critically acclaimed production of Jekyll and Hyde, the Musical. DOMA began as a joint venture between Dolf Ramos and Marco Gomez in 2002. In the beginning, DOMA provided a platform for young talent to obtain experience performing in musical Theater Productions alongside seasoned professionals. As the company grew, it partnered with The Hope & Union Foundation, a California public benefit organization dedicated to the arts and to assisting at-risk youth. Through its partnership with the Foundation, DOMA was able to stage productions including new works (Lovers' MayhemGallery), revivals (CabaretInto The Woods, The Wild Party, Passion, Jaques Brel…), and plays (The Actor's Nightmare and Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All).

Xanadu runs Fridays and Saturdays @ 8 pm and Sundays @ 3 pm from Sept. 7 through Oct. 7. Tickets range from $30–$34.99; seniors and students with ID pay only $20. The MET Theatre is located at 1089 N. Oxford Ave., Los Angeles CA 90029. Secure, on-site parking is available for $5 at Earl Scheib Paint and Auto Body, 5416 Santa Monica Blvd. For more information and to purchase tickets, call (323) 802-4990 or go to www.DomaTheatre.com.
