Becky and Baldwin's OTHER PLAYS to Showcase Four Distinct Writers

Theatre group, Becky and Baldwin, presents Other Plays, an evening of funny, strange and provocative new plays by Mari Assad, Mara De La Rosa, Rosie Narasaki and Nicholas Pilapil. Other Plays will be performed at the Collective Arts Incubator in Highland Park on Nov. 5. Tickets are currently available at bit.ly/otherplays.

"We like plays that push the boundaries, that are unapologetically honest, hilarious and a little weird," says Becky and Baldwin co-founder and playwright Nicholas Pilapil. "Other Plays is a celebration of those kinds of plays and the people who write them."

Other Plays showcases four short plays and distinct playwrights as they tackle virginity, identity and the unconventionality of love.

In Mari Assad's The Great Vice, Em is seconds away from playing her dream role, Iago, in Shakespeare's Othello. However, everything shatters to pieces when her fictional character comes to life, and has a lot to say about her representation of him.

Mari Assad graduated from American Musical and Dramatic Academy with her BFA in Acting where she wrote her first piece, a short film, The Pregnancy Pact: A Satire. Mari has performed in plays at The Santa Monica Rep at The Broad Stage, written, produced and starred in her web series, Brother Husbands and is currently studying improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade.

The first in a series of plays, Mara de La Rosa's Ugly Girl Chronicles: Ep. 1 follows Monica as she is determined to lose her virginity the night before she gets a Pap smear. Although her roommate tries to talk her out of it, Monica does not want her first time to be with a probe at the gynecologist's. The night takes an unexpected turn at the local dive bar when she meets and bonds with Clay, a sad aspiring actor.

Mara De La Rosa recently completed fellowships with the Incubator Lab through Loyola Marymount University and Film Independent, and Outfest's OutSet. She is currently in post-production for her short film BASTARD (Incubator Lab & OutSet), which she also wrote and directed. Other film credits: producer for the short Called Home (premiere at the 2016 Outfest Film Festival) and writer/director for the short I Like Femme Lesbians (Outfest and the North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival). De La Rosa's full-length play Real Love had an extended sold-out run at the award winning Fountain Theatre in 2015.

Visitation Rites by Rosie Narasaki follows Genji as he tryies to enjoy a simple romantic moment in a cafe, when the ghost of his recently deceased ex-girlfriend decides to possess his date. Their brief and comedic interaction spans everything from his philandering ways to the ultimate existential crisis -- death. Loosely based on The Tale of Genji (but not as loosely as you'd think).

Rosie Narasaki is a Los Angeles-based playwright and actor. As an actor, recent highlights include the west coast premiere of In Love and Warcraft and the short film Fish Bowl. As a writer, she has a play currently in development with hereandnow Theatre Company. She can also be found as a writer extolling the many virtues of Kylie Jenner for Bustle.com.

In, Meow, Meow, Hiss by Nicholas Pilapil, Harry is a simple man. He loves his dead mom, his Jesus-loving grandma Poppy, and just wants to find the girl of his dreams. But, when he finally falls in love, Poppy does everything to stop it. Because no one is good enough for her grandson...especially the cat Harry's fallen in love with.

Nicholas Pilapil is a writer of plays and songs. His plays have been developed/performed at East West Players, Fresh Produce'd LA and Playwrights Foundation. Nicholas is a member of The Vagrancy's Playwrights Group, the 2016/17 Playground-LA Writers Pool and is a producing member of Los Angeles theatre collective Artists at Play.

Becky and Baldwin is a theatre company dedicated to the creation of new plays. Founded in 2015 by Mara De La Rosa and Nicholas Pilapil, Becky and Baldwin aims to create and produce theatre that is funny, strange and provocative. Their inaugural production was the world premiere of Real Love written and directed by Mara De La Rosa.
