The Smith Center Announces January Events

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts has announced the following events for January:

REYNOLDS HALL

Las Vegas Philharmonic – Masterworks III - Ravel, Sibelius & Mozart –Rising Star

Saturday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m.

Ticket prices start at $46

Reynolds Hall

Each year the Las Vegas Philharmonic designates one of its Masterworks concerts to showcase an up-and-coming music talent. This year the Philharmonic features violinist Elena Urioste, a two-time winner of the Sphinx Competition. Picture postcards spring to mind as the Las Vegas Philharmonic takes patrons on an aural European tour. A blend of Basque melodies and French style inspired the sensual, hypnotic dance rhythm of Ravel’s “Bolero.” Sibelius evokes the austere winter landscape of Finland in his Violin Concerto, expertly delivered by the radiant Elena Urioste. The journey ends in Austria with Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony, the thrilling and triumphant capstone of his symphonic output.

JAZZ ROOTS: Vocalese featuring The Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices and Special Guest Jon Hendricks

Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Vocalese takes some of the best-known, most complex and sophisticated instrumental solos in jazz and treats them as melodies with swinging, poetic lyrics. For the first time ever living legend Jon Hendricks, the originator of the Vocalese style, will perform with eight-time Grammy® Award-winning vocal group The Manhattan Transfer and New York Voices.
