David Cale’s PALOMINO Opens At Kansas City Rep Theatre, Opens 10/16

The world premiere of Palomino by award-winning author and virtuoso performer David Cale opens Kansas City Repertory Theatre's 2009-10 Sprint Series at Copaken Stage. Palomino, written, performed and self-directed by Cale, was originally commissioned by Long Wharf Theatre in Connecticut and developed with the assistance of The Sundance Institute Theatre Program.

"David Cale's genius as a raconteur transcends expectations," said Eric Rosen, artistic director of Kansas City Repertory Theatre. "He deftly takes on different personas to tell this enthralling story about an inscrutable Irish carriage driver in Central Park who moonlights as an escort for wealthy women."

Rosen attended a reading of Palomino last summer while it was still under development at Sundance, where Cale was writer-in-residence and Rosen was directing Diagram of a Paper Airplane, by Carlos Murillo. "Sundance is an incredibly creative place where we are surrounded by truly visionary artists like David who are generating entirely original works of theatre," Rosen said. "The first time I saw Palomino I immediately began to visualize how it would look at Copaken Stage, which is perfect for this intimate show." For Palomino, seating will be limited to the lower half of the theatre.

The multi-talented Cale is best known for his solo works Somebody Else's House, Deep in a Dream of You, Smooch Music, The Redthroats, and the Obie Award-winning Lillian, which have been performed in New York and Chicago. His monologues have been featured on the public radio programs "This American Life" and "The Next Big Thing" and on BBC Radio 4's "Afternoon Play." As a lyricist, his words have been performed by Elvis Costello, Deborah Harry, and the Jazz Passengers.

Steven Winn of the San Francisco Chronicle has written "David Cale...is a spellbinder. Fascinating as he is to watch, and exquisite as his verbal imagery can be, it is Cale's gifts as a storyteller that hold an audience rapt."

The creative team for Palomino is Paul Joseph Barnett (Set Design), Laura Bauer (Costume Design), Ben Stanton (Lighting Design), Jeffrey Cady (Projection Design) and Andre Pluess (Sound Design).
