AUDITIONS (MAINSTAGE)

WHAT?: Don't be "shy"! Be a part of our Spring musical! Audition to become a part of TIP's exciting 2011 Spring musical, "ONCE UPON A MATTRESS".

From the same team that brought you last season's momentous musical production of PIPPIN comes a musical comedy that will be fun for all ages! If you thought you knew the story of "The Princess and The Pea", you may be in for a walloping surprise! Quite possibly one of the most sidesplittingly funny musicals ever written, "ONCE UPON A MATTRESS" made Carol Burnett a star and features such wonderful songs as "In a Little While," "Happily Ever After," and "Shy".

WHEN?:
Audition dates: January 21st, 22nd, & 23rd, 2011
To audition, please attend one of four sessions below.
Session 1:
Friday, January 21, 7pm - 10pm
Session 2:
Saturday, January 22, 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Session 3:
Saturday, January 22 , 6pm - 9pm
**UPDATE: Due to space availability, Sunday times have been changed.**
Session 4:
Sunday, January 23, 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Session 5:
Sunday, January 23, 6pm - 9pm

*NOTE*
Callbacks: Monday, January 24th from 7pm - 10pm

Rehearsals: January through May in central Tokyo (mainly Hatagaya, Akasaka, Omotesando and Azabu.). Rehearsal days and times TBA after casting.
Show dates: May 19-22, 2011 at Theater Sun-Mall in Shinjuku
Mandatory tech rehearsals: Starting from May 14, 2011

HOW?:
The audition will consist of three parts: singing, acting, and dancing.
Part 1 - Singing: Please come prepared to sing roughly 16 bars of any song of your choosing, either a cappella or with previously-recorded accompaniment (CD or iPod-playing capabilities will be provided). After, you may be asked to learn and sing a song from the show. Familiarity with the music is a bonus but not a necessity.
Part 2 - Acting: You will be given scenes from the script to act out. Familiarity with the story and characters is a bonus but not a necessity.
Part 3 - Dancing: The dance audition will be in two sections, the first section being simpler than the second. All those auditioning must attempt the first section. There will be cuts prior to learning the second section, as the second section is only for people interested in being cast as a dancer or in a lead role.

Preparation:
1) Please prepare roughly 16 bars of any song of your choosing to sing either a cappella or with previously-recorded accompaniment (CD or iPod-playing capabilities will be provided).
2) If you have a special skill (gymnastic skills, magic tricks, instruments played, etc.), please be ready to demonstrate. Anything unique you feel you do well is acceptable.
3) Please bring comfortable clothes to dance in.
4) Please arrive warmed up and ready to sing.

WHO?:
Roles available:
Queen Aggravaine (F): Bossy queen. Alto lead role. Age: 30s ~ 60s.
Princess Winnifred (F): The comical heroine. Alto belter lead role. Age: 16 ~ 30s.
Prince Dauntless (M): The drab but lovable prince. Baritone lead role. Age: 16 ~ 30s.
King Sextimus (M): The mute king. Supporting lead role. Age: 30s ~ 60s.
Jester (M or F): King's right-hand clown. Tenor/alto lead role. Age: youth ~ 60s.
Sir Harry (M): Dashing young knight. Tenor lead role. Age: 20s ~ 30s.
Minstrel (M or F): Globe-trotting narrator. Tenor/alto lead role. Age: youth ~ 60s.
Lady Larken (F): Lady-in-waiting ingenue. Soprano lead role. Age: 20s ~ 30s.
Wizard (M): Scheming henchman of Queen. Supporting lead role. Age: 20s ~ 60s.
Nightingale of Samarkand (F): The bird. Soprano cameo role. Age: teens ~ 60s.
Ladies-in-waiting/Knights (6M/6F): Dancers and supporting roles. Age: teens ~ 60s.
Servants/puppeteers (6M/6F): Chorus and cameo roles. Age: teens ~ 80s.
