The Ensemble Theatre Act One Young Professionals kick off their sixth annual poetry event entitled: Drama-try: A Dramatic Night of Poetry, Saturday, April 22, 2017, 7:00pm - Midnight at The Ensemble Theatre 3535 Main St. Houston, TX 77002.

Houston area poets lending their talents to this year's poetry showcase include: Joe P, the evening's emcee who will be joined by featured poets The Birdwalker, Non-Conformity, Pace Poetry, and Slap J.

"We are incredibly excited to host another year of Drama-try, says Andrea Browne, Act One Young Professionals Steering Committee Chair. "This continues to be a great collaboration of volunteers, donors, and poets providing a beautiful night of entertainment that will result in a scholarship for a youth to attend The Ensemble Theatre Young Performers Program."

Act One Young Professionals began hosting their annual poetry showcase to create another platform for Houston area poets and establish a way to introduce younger audiences to The Ensemble Theatre. Since the inception of Dramatry, a host of prominent and emerging poets have performed, including Houston's newest Poet Laureate, Deborah "D.E.E.P." Mouton. A portion of the proceeds from the show support a scholarship for the theatre's Young Performers Program, a performing arts education program for youth ages 6-17.

Act One was formed as a way to unite The Ensemble Theatre's growing community of young artists and professionals with an increasing interest in how they can contribute to sustaining the institution. They are recognized as the theatre's next generation of leaders who support the theatre's annual membership campaign, as well as, volunteer and fundraising support.

The Ensemble Theatre's 2016-2017 Season is sponsored in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. United Airlines is the official airline sponsor for The Ensemble Theatre.

The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community. In addition to being the oldest and largest professional African-American theatre in the Southwest, it also holds the distinction of being one of the nation's largest African-American theatres that owns and operates its facility with an in-house production team.

The Ensemble Theatre produces a main stage season of contemporary and classic works devoted to the portrayal of the African American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The theatre's Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, Artist-in-Residence experiences and live performances for students both off-site and at the theatre; and the Young Performers Program offers intensive summer training for children ages six to 17 encompassing instruction in all disciplines of the theatre arts.
