Now Playing Onstage in Houston - Week of 3/23/2014 MUSIC FROM A SPARKLING PLANET
Pearl Theater
Pearland Theatre Guild's production of Music From a Sparkling Planet by Douglas Carter Beane runs at the Pearl Theater March 14 - 30, 2014. Pearl Theater continues to provide audiences light diversions with polish and gusto, and in its effort to embrace nostalgia as more than a comic retreat, Music from a Sparkling Planet "will remind you of those carefree days of childhood when there was nothing more important to do than play baseball, watch cartoons and wait for Christmas. The story of looking for fulfillment in the past, only to realize that it lies in the future, has touched me in so many ways," says Director, John Lazo. In the 1970s, Tamara Tomorrow thrilled and amused her youthful space kiddets with cheery predictions of the future. Today, three thirty-something adults, "only on paper," are in search of hope and meaning in life. Life, as they know it, seems to suck. With responsibility and accountability slowly creeping in, things certainly are not as they once were. Through casual conversation, they discover their mutual admiration and love for a one-time local television star, Tamara Tomorrow. Decades later, three of her adoring fans set out on a search to find their childhood idol, which leads to the big question: What in the world ever happened to Tamara Tomorrow? She was sexy, happy, positive and every little boy's first love interest and the woman every little girl wanted to be. As a last ditch effort to escape the present, the trio seek to relive the happiness of their innocent youth, no matter what the cost of finding their muse. Soon they must confront what it means to hold on, and what it means to let go. Come blast off with us as past meets present, dreams meet reality, and we'll show you such a Sparkling Planet. Oh! What the future holds! What the future holds! Now Playing Onstage in Houston - Week of 3/23/2014 A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
Beaumont Community Players
Steamy and strong, "A Streetcar Named Desire" is Tennessee Williams' most celebrated work. The play introduces Blanche du Bois, a fragile Southern Belle, who has retreated into fantasy because of harsh life experiences. She comes to live with her sister who is pregnant, married to loutish Stanley and living in a squalid section of New Orleans. To her brother-in-law Blanche is an unforgivable liar. Crudely, he unmasks the lies and delusions that sustain her, until her frail hold on reality is shockingly severed. "A Streetcar Named Desire" is a modern tragedy, which ranks as one of the greatest in American Theatre.

The newest play by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Dinner with Friends and Collected Stories follows a wounded photojournalist and her husband in present day Brooklyn in the aftermath of the Iraqi war. A Tony nominee for Best Play during the 2010 Broadway season. "'What I tried to do with this play,' Donald Margulies says, 'is capture a sense of the way we live now, to dramatize the things that thinking, feeling, moral people are thinking about and struggle with - the issues of how to be a citizen of the world, how to show compassion, how to be involved, how to be true to yourself and your immediate loved ones.'"
