On October 16, 2014 the Alley Theatre was honored with the Houston Mod Preservation Award. The award, presented by Houston Mod, recognizes Alley Theatre for furthering the knowledge, appreciation and preservation of modern architecture and design in Houston and Texas. Houston Mod's president Steve Curry states that the Houston Mod Preservation Award "is specifically intended to celebrate Alley Theatre's stewardship of this unique modern Houston landmark, especially appropriate now that the renovation is underway."

"As stewards of our iconic building in the heart of the downtown Theatre District, it is paramount for us to maintain the character of the architecture while enhancing functionality of the building as a modern working theatre, with state-of-the art theatre technology and modern audience amenities" stated Managing Director Dean R. Gladden. "We are honored to accept the Houston Mod Preservation Award during this exciting moment in the Alley's history."

The award program is open to nominations from all of Houston Mod membership, and conferees are selected by vote of the HM board of directors. Past recipients have included the Humble/Exxon-Mobil building downtown, the Heights Bank on Washington Street, The Center on West Dallas Street, Baker Botts Law Firm, Gragg Building (City of Houston), Brochstein's on South Main Street, and Temple Emanu El on Sunset Boulevard.

As the Alley Theatre undergoes the first major renovation in its history, all 2014-2015 season performances are at the University of Houston's (UH) main campus. Details about the previously announced renovation can be found at www.alleytheatre.org/renovation.

Construction on the Alley Theatre building began in July, 2014 and will continue through the summer of 2015, with the grand opening of the renovated Alley Theatre scheduled for October 2015. Having raised $47.5 million in the "Extended Engagement" campaign, the theatre intends to raise a total of $56.5 million by August 2015 to complete the first two phases of the campaign, Artistic Enhancement and Renovation. This will allow the theatre to have the building costs secured, before the Alley Theatre begins its inaugural season back in its downtown home.
