Obsidian Theater in association with SRO Productions will stage 1984 this June at Obsidian Theater. 1984 is an adaptation by Michael Gene Sullivan of George Orwell's masterpiece novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four.

The play, which takes place in a dystopian future, revolves around the protagonist Winston Smith and his resistance to Big Brother, the Inner Party and its omnipresent government driven by surveillance, propaganda, and manipulation.

In a world caught up in a perpetual war, the people are dictated to by a political regime overseen by the enigmatic Big Brother. In this taut adaptation of Orwell's 1949 classic, Mr. Sullivan places Winston center stage at what could best be called his conversion, as party members act out scenes from his treasonous diary. Often categorized as science fiction, 1984 is, for many, a relevant and familiar reflection of our own world in turmoil. In Sullivan's genius adaptation, the audience - the omni-present observer - will find themselves captivated by Winston's narrative and complicit in his persecution.

Under the helm of director Tom Stell (Director of the award-winning Ruined) and assistant director Kelsey McMillen, the cast and crew of this Houston premier are passionate about bringing this relevant story to Houston audiences. Winston Smith will be portrayed by Allen Titel, O'Brien will be played by Chris Gibson and the various member of the Inner Party members by Danielle Bunch, Cameron Davis, Gino Sandoval and Blake Wier. Special talkback sessions will be held after Saturday evening shows - June 3, 10 and 17.

1984 opens June 1 and continues through 17 at Obsidian Theater. Evening performances are 8 p.m. June 1 through 3, June 8 through 12, June 15 through 17. Matinee performances are 3 p.m. June 4 and 2 p.m. June 17. For information, please call 832-889-7837 or visit obsidiantheater.org.
