Superstar violinist Augustin Hadelich joins the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) for a spectacular concert weekend led by Maestro Marcelo Lehninger and featuring one of the repertoire's most popular masterworks, Lalo's passionate Symphonie espagnole, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 19 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 20 4 p.m. This must-see concert also includes Mozart's Overture to The Magic Flute and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. Maestro Lehninger makes his HSO debut in these performances. Tickets range from $34 to $92 and are on sale now at hawaiisymphonyorchestra.org or by calling 94-MUSIC (946-8742).

Grammy Award-winner Hadelich, who made his HSO debut in 2014, is one of the great violinists of his generation. Winner of the 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant and gold medalist of the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, he plays the 1683 ex-Gingold Stradivari violin. Hadelich has performed with every major orchestra in the U.S., as well as an ever-growing number of major orchestras in the U.K., Europe, and Asia, impressing audiences with his poetic style and dazzling technique. The Washington Post writes, "The essence of Hadelich's playing is beauty: reveling in the myriad ways of making a phrase come alive on the violin, delivering the musical message with no technical impediments whatsoever, and thereby revealing something from a plane beyond ours."

According to Hadelich, "Lalo's Symphonie espagnole is a beautiful and exciting work, which just until a few decades ago was one of the most frequently played concertos in the violin repertoire. It is rarely heard nowadays, but wherever I play it, listeners are surprised when they rediscover how great a piece it is." Hadelich's upcoming recording of Symphonie espagnole with the London Philharmonic Orchestra is slated for release in spring 2017.

In 2009, Hadelich made his extraordinary debut with the Cleveland Orchestra playing Lalo's Symphonie espagnole. In its review, the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote, "A consummate showman, Hadelich pranced over considerable technical obstacles with fluent ease, then dashed off a Paganini caprice as an encore." The Symphonie espagnole, which is neither a traditional violin concerto nor a traditional symphony, has won its place in the hearts of a new generation of violinists who have embraced it for its passion, virtuosity and beauty.

HSO concertgoers will also experience another masterpiece at these concerts that is guaranteed to please: Beethoven's Symphony No. 4. According to Maestro Lehninger, "I spent many years studying and researching Beethoven's symphonies, and they are very close to my heart. When I was in Vienna assisting Maestro Kurt Masur, I visited the Musikverein archives and saw Beethoven's metronome and some of his manuscripts and documents, and I made some really interesting discoveries. The Symphony No. 4 is definitively one of my favorites!"
