ProArts is proud to present "The Fantasticks" as the last production of its Fall/Winter season of family friendly shows. The longest running musical ever will be presented for twelve performances this holiday season at the new ProArts Playhouse in Kihei.

A wonderful parable of love, "The Fantasticks" with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, tells the story of a young man and the girl next door, whose feuding parents have built a wall to keep them apart. The youngsters nevertheless contrive to meet and fall in love. Their parents congratulate themselves, for they have staged the feud in order to achieve, by negation, a marriage between their disobedient children. A narrator sets the imagined scene and, in the role of professional abductor, pretends to fall before the onslaught of the young man, letting the boy think he is a hero. The night is full of moonlight and romance. The sun comes up and the day brings an end to dreams. The lovers must now face reality. The dashing vagabond, who was their guide to romance and illusion, becomes their instructor in disillusionment. It is only when he has shown the boy the harshness of the world, and has let the girl see that love can be false, that they come to understand each other. "The Fantasticks" features such great tunes as "Try to Remember", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "I Can See It, " and "They Were You."

From the creative team that brought you "Urinetown" and "Cabaret", "The Fantasticks" is brought to life in Kihei by Maui's best performers: Robert Wills as El Gallo, the Narrator, LeighAnna Locke as The Girl, Tom Althouse as The Boy, Dale Button as The Girl's Father, Jonathan Lehman as The Boy's Father, John Peterson as The Old Actor, Kalani Whitford as The Man Who Dies, and James Natividad as The Mute.

Opening night is December 10 and the show plays weekends through January 16, 2011 (taking a two weekend hiatus during the Christmas/New Year holiday); Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:00pm, and Thursday, January 13 at 7:30pm. There will be no performance on December 12.

The show is directed by Doug Kendrick with musical direction by Anne Durham. Caro Walker designed the scenery, with costumes by Kathleen Schulz, and lighting design by Bonnie Prucha. The assistant director for the show is Yumi Numata. ProArts is co-produced by Jonathan Lehman and Doug Kendrick.

The intimate ProArts Playhouse is located at the Azeka (Makai) Shopping Center, 1280 S. Kihei Rd. in Kihei. It's air conditioned with 80 reserved seats. There is free parking, plenty of nearby restaurants, and an art gallery with works by Leslie Granat, Jefferson Stillwell, Laurna Malkovick, and James Natividad.
