Kumu Kahua Theatre Presents MOA A MOI, Begin. Tonight

As a part of Kumu Kahua Theatre?s upcoming season, Moa a Moi by Jean Charlot, the Jean Charlot Foundation is supporting the production with a sponsorship for the show's artistic personnel.

Moa a Moi or 'Chicken Into King,' opens tonight, January 23, 2014, and recreates several stories about Umi, who was raised as a commoner and became a wise and famous al'i nui.

To celebrate this collaboration, Kumu Kahua is having a reception for the Jean Charlot Foundation members on Sunday, January 26, 2014, prior to the matinee performance. This reception will feature catering by Laverne?s, as well as an informational display about Charlot's plays. A discussion of his work will be given by a member of the foundation, prior to the performance. The production director, Daniel A. Kelin and Kumu Kahua Theatre Artistic Director, Harry Wong, will be on hand for discussion.

"Jean Charlot's art is a part of the daily life of O'ahu," says the production director, Daniel A. Kelin. "And now we will have the unique pleasure of enjoying one of his hidden gems; his play MOA A MOI that pays tribute to Hawai?i's long ago King, Umi-a-Liloa. Thanks to the wonderful support of the Charlot Foundation, we all, from theatre artist to audience, can get a glimpse into this master artist's great respect for Hawai'i."

"This will be the first time since the 1960s that a play by Charlot has been produced," adds Jean Trapido-Rosenthal, President of the Jean Charlot Foundation. The Foundation is delighted that Kumu Kahua is introducing the community to Charlot the playwright.
