Kumu Kahua Theatre Offers Free Classes and Event at Kaka'ako Agora

Once again, Kumu Kahua Theatre will partner with Interisland Terminal to bring theatre classes and a performance to Kaka'ako. These free classes and event are offered courtesy of Interisland Terminal to kick-off the opening of Kaka'ako Agora, a new community space.

Monday June 9, 6pm-8:30 PM Acting Class

Acting is Breathing taught by Donna Blanchard. This master-class in character embodiment will focus on guiding experienced actors to a deeper understanding of their characters on an emotional and physical level. Please come with a monologue ready for work. (level: some experience-experienced)

Donna Blanchard received her BFA from the Professional Actors' Training Conservatory Program of Wright State University and has acted in, directed, produced, taught acting classes and coached actors in theatres throughout the continental Midwest for more than 30 years. Her Hawaii stage debut was in The Vagina Monologues at The ARTS at Mark's Garage in April 2014.

Monday June 16, 6pm-8:30 PM Stage Combat Class

Essential Stage Combat for Actors taught by Tony Pisculli. Hand-to-hand stage combat instruction with an emphasis on safety. (level: beginner-some experience)

Tony Pisculli is Hawaii's premiere fight director and has been teaching and choreographing stage combat for over 20 years. He is a Master Teacher with Dueling Arts International and has choreographed over 100 productions including stage, indie film, opera and burlesque. He has received three Po'okela Special Adjudicator awards for fight choreography. He is also the co-founder and producer of the Hawai'i Shakespeare Festival, now entering its 13th season. for Kumu Kahua Theatre he has choreographed fights for Emmalehua, Othello, Island Skin Songs, Love Three Times and Who the Fil-Am I?

Wednesday June 25, 6pm- 8:30 PM Season Announcement and Stage Reading of Kumu Kahua Theatre's 44th Season Opener, Scot Izuka's, Shoyu on Rice, directed by Harry Wong III

Shoyu on Rice - in a stage reading forum, Kumu Kahua Theatre actors bring you their season opener: a local comedy by Scot Izuka. The evening will open with announcement of the 44th season of productions at Kumu Kahua Theatre (open to anyone)

Harry Wong III graduated with an MFA in Direction from the University of Hawaii at Mnoa. Thereafter his theatre activity has centered around the Artistic Directorship of KKT, apart from the 1995-96 season which he spent in Washington DC as an Allen Lee Hughes Fellow with the Washington Arena Theatre. His KKT directing credits include the world premiere of Apio's Kmau in 1994 and Kmau A`e in 1997 and acclaimed productions, including O'Malley's To The Last Hawaiian Soldier, Sakamoto's Fishing For Wives and a revival of K?mau which toured to the 2008 Pacific Arts Festival in American Samoa.

Kumu Kahua Theatre exists to encourage local playwrights, produce work of local playwrights and/or plays dealing with some aspect of local culture, and to develop theatre artists and the audiences who appreciate this work.

The classes and event will be held at the new Kaka'ako Agora space at 441 Cooke Street. Class enrollment is limited and will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.

Kaka'ako Agora is a park designed for 21st Century Honolulu. It is the first project of its kind in Honolulu, designed by internationally renowned architecture studio Atelier Bow-Wow to create a dynamic space for our local community and an architectural intervention, where forward thinking, collaborative design results in a much needed, open and accessible community gathering space.
