Fear, vulnerability, passion – the dark extremes of human emotions dominate the three works of the ballet program “Duato | Kylian | Naharin”. While "Castrati" by Nacho Duato revolves around the fear of an aspiring singer before castration, Ji?í Kylián's "Petite Mort" deals with the aggressive as well as the vulnerable sides of sexuality. "Secus" is an abstract work by Ohad Naharin, based on power, extremes and raw meat.
Accompanied by Vivaldi's baroque music, Nacho Duato’s "Castrati", a work for nine male dancers, questions the importance of masculinity and the role of sacrifices in a world that demands perfection. Created in 2002, the piece deals with the phenomenon of castrati singers – young men who were castrated in the 17th and 18th centuries in order to preserve their high voices and which were the stars of their time. Duato's work focuses on the fear of a boy who is to be introduced into this particular community. The androgynous dance moves – distinctive and unsettling – are accompanied by music by Antonio Vivaldi, who also composed for castrati voices, and contemporary music by Karl Jenkins.
Ohad Naharin, director of the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, is one of the most important protagonists of contemporary choreography these days and is invited with his work by renowned dance companies from all over the world. For the first time, he is now working together with the Staatsballett Berlin, which worked with "Gaga", a movement concept developed by Naharin. "Gaga" is looking for the interaction between the dancers who jointly acquire a space of movement in-between freedom and well-being. "Secus", a piece for 16 dancers with music by "The Beach Boys" and even from the Hindi film "Kaho Naa ... Pyar Hai", premiered with the Batsheva Dance Company in 2005. "I like to play with boundaries. Passion and extremes, reduction, out-breaking force, raw meat, juicy bodies – the pleasure of the moment, such as when eating ", is what the piece is about according to the Israeli choreographer.
To put visual surprises in scene is the hallmark of the Czech choreographer Ji?í Kylián. One of his key pieces is "Petite mort" from 1991. This work for six men and six women is based on the popular Adagio movements of the piano concertos Nos. 21 and 23 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The intensity of the slow musical is juxtaposed an energetic and ambiguous showcase of male as female attributes. These play on the "little death" ("petite mort" is French for "orgasm") as a sexual ritual of aggression, power and vulnerability.
