Turning his back on cultural clichés, Sebastian Baumgarten sets this production of Carmen in a contemporary Spain. The opera of jealousy becomes a thriller where the hunt for clues develops into an associative world of images, right up to the big show-down at the end: “Always sticking closely to the score, painstakingly anatomised, coolly assembled, utterly unsentimental - and gripping for precisely that reason.” [Der Tagesspiegel]

The musical arrangement is in the hands of young Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinyt?-Tyla, Kapellmeister in Bern and one of the most promising conductors of our day!
