Located in the "green heart" of Germany, the Bad Hersfeld Festival is one of Germany's oldest and most distinguished open-air theatre festivals. Every summer since 1951, highly acclaimed international actors from theatre, film and television have brought major works of world literature to the stage each evening, performing for an audience of 1600 in the setting provided by the ruin of a Romanesque church dating to the 12th century.

From the 12th of June to the 8th of August 2010 the 60th festival will be celebrated, and will look back on an one-of-a-kind tradition of open air theatre and musical presentations. The current repertoire reflects the topic Europe in different ways. It will be shown the new musical production CARMEN - A GERMAN MUSICAL with Anna Montanaro singing the lead (opening night: 16th of June, 9 pm), the classic WEST SIDE STORY (opening night: 17th of July, 9 pm) and the plays WILHELM TELL from Friedrich Schiller (opening night: 12th of June, 9 pm), SUMMERGUESTS from Maxim Gorki (opening night: 19th of June, 9 pm), ON NE BADINE PAS AVEC L'AMOUR from Alfred de Mussets (opening night: 2nd of July, 8:30 pm), and a play called KEIN SCHIFF WIRD KOMMEN from Nis-Momme Stockmann (opening night: 9th of July, 9 pm), which deals with the topic of German reunion.

In Cooperation with the youngest Berlin state theatre, Theater an der Parkaue, the Bad Hersfelder Festival stages DIE BRUDER LOWENHERZ, based on the children's book written by Astrid Lindgren (opening night: 24th of June, 10 am). This year will also be presented a new international theatre exchange program called Europolis 2050. Each year until 2013, various European countries are invited to present existing or new productions, which concern the topic what the future of Europe will look like. 2010, the program starts with a youth exchange program. Teenagers from Great Britain, Finland, Israel, Croatia and Germany will attend a youth forum and work together with a summer academy from the 12th to the 20th of June. The result will be presented at the festival (presentation: 20th of June, 11 am).
