(11/24/2014) - During her musically spectacular performance at 54 Below last night Ann playfully introduces her pianist as George Gershwin. Ted Rosenthal may probably be able to play Gershwin's music with more accuracy than the composer did. However, I'm sure George Gershwin would never be able to accompany Ann as good as Ted Rosenthal does.

(11/24/2014) - 'The story is told in verse, densely packed with rhyme, which has to be spoken so that it sounds like natural language.' 'Much of the play concerns a battle between angels and demons.' 'There is little action in the play, just a series of monologues.' 'The play is filled with vivid, vulgar verse.'

BWW Reviews: Lyric Music Theater Essays OLIVER! Revival PhotosBWW Reviews: Lyric Music Theater Essays OLIVER! Revival
by Carla Maria Verdino-S├╝llwold

(11/24/2014) - In this season of ubiquitous productions of A Christmas Carol, a production of Lionel Bart's Oliver! comes as a welcome Dickensian alternative. South Portland's Lyric Music Theater has mounted a very respectable revival of Bart's 1960 musical based on Oliver Twist. A curious but catchy melange of dark drama and vaudeville, Oliver! survives in its trio of principal characters, Fagin, Nancy, and Sykes, and the memorable music Bart has written for them.

BWW Reviews: Finding Oneself in FIDELIO PhotosBWW Reviews: Finding Oneself in FIDELIO
by Finny (Amanda Finn)

(11/24/2014) - As one can imagine, an opera created by Ludwig van Beethoven is likely driven by intricate musicality. That assumption would be completely accurate as the plot is fairly simple and the characters are of common theatrical stock. Though these observations are true, Madison Opera's recent production of Fidelio - translated as the favorite child - is far from ordinary.
