Now Playing Onstage in Fort Lauderdale - Week of 3/30/2014 OKLAHOMA!
Westminster Academy
4/4-4/5/2014
Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!Music by Rodgers, Richard; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Original Dances by Agnes de Mille; Based on the play `Green Grow the Lilacs` by Lynn Riggs

Now Playing Onstage in Fort Lauderdale - Week of 3/30/2014 DA-DA: A CONTEMPORARY DANCE
Aventura Arts & Cultural Center
4/4-4/5/2014
"Da-Da", choreographer Augusto Soledade's latest work, is an exploration of rhythm as a cultural concept that expands to inform, inspire and connect people from various cultures. Soledade feels that the sense of Afro-Brazilian rhythm that he has and the rhythms in Flamenco music and dance are representations of cultural aesthetics specific to those who practice, adopt and reproduce these forms, and will be linked together in how he chooses to re-interpret them in this new work, promoting a hybrid cultural aesthetic. Soledade's interest in Flamenco is in part a response to his life in Miami. It is attractive to him as an aesthetic form that represents a rich cultural practice with a deep history, which has influenced music and dance the world over through its rhythmic structures. He also selected it to create a challenge in his creative process, as he considers himself a novice in the form. It is an opportunity to deconstruct specific rhythms without the restraints of a traditional practice. As a contemporary choreographer, Soledade feels that his role is to seek innovative projects that create fresh content and outlook on global life. Through his creative process, Augusto Soledade will generate unexpected parallels between his rhythmic heritage and other world rhythms. In "Da-Da", Flamenco music and dance, and Dadaism act as lenses to filter and expand artistic ideas beyond Soledade's personal experience, but are not intended to be authentically reproduced in the final work.

Now Playing Onstage in Fort Lauderdale - Week of 3/30/2014 ORQUESTA ARAGÓN
Arts Garage
4/8-4/9/2014
"One of Cuba's grandest, longest-established bands… What makes the Orquesta Aragon so fine is the sophistication of its arrangements. A familiar song like "Guantanamera," for instance, was subjected to all manner of chromatic twists and instrumental niceties, yet such cleverness never got in the way of the original's fervent intensity." New York Times "The legendary group… the fourth generation of musicians who've kept the music of its prolific founder and composer Ignacio Piñeiro alive" Miami New Times Arts Garage is thrilled to announce the return of the Cuban music icon Orquesta Aragon. This legendary ensemble, formed in Cuba in 1939, quickly established itself as a true institution of Cuban music, and has evolved over the years to incorporate new instruments and musical innovations. They are credited with inspiring the New York mambo movement in the 1950s, and are hailed as "the purest form music from Cuba." This 15-person ensemble combines violins, piano, flute, percussion and vocals to deliver one of the best live shows on the planet. For two nights only, this legendary ensemble ignites the stage in a fury of Latin rhythms and raucous beats. Dust off your dancing shoes and join us for this once-in-a-lifetime performance that promises to thrill and entertain.
