MACBETH to Tour Southern California Parks for Shakespeare by the Sea's 29th Free Season

Shakespeare by the Sea has announced its 29th Admission-Free Summer Shakespeare Season with a touring production of Macbeth, running June 26 through July 25 in parks throughout Southern California.

After a challenging few years that raised questions about the future of the program, SBTS is moving forward with renewed focus and commitment. With support from its community and leadership sponsors Play On Shakespeare and the Hitz Foundation, pre-production is underway and the company is preparing for a summer of live theatre in the parks.

This year's season has been intentionally scaled to a single, high-impact production. While more focused than in years past, the tour will still serve more than a dozen communities and reach an estimated 10,000 audience members.

"This is a season built with intention," says Co-Artistic Director Suzanne Dean. "We are focusing our resources to ensure that the work remains strong, immediate, and accessible. It may look different, but it is unmistakably Shakespeare by the Sea."

"Macbeth is the story that can carry this moment. It speaks to ambition, power, and consequence in a way that feels immediate and urgent, and we are shaping this production to be both deeply resonant and accessible to the communities we serve."

Ambition ignites. Power corrupts. Fate closes in. When a celebrated warrior encounters three mysterious figures who foretell his rise to the throne, a chain of ruthless choices is set in motion. As prophecy turns to obsession and loyalty gives way to fear, he must navigate the dangerous line between what is foretold and what he is willing to do to make it real. Macbeth is a gripping story of ambition, consequence, and the cost of surrendering to the darkest parts of ourselves.

Macbeth, in a modern verse translation by Migdalia Cruz, adapted and directed by Stephanie Coltrin, offers a fresh and immediate take on Shakespeare's gripping exploration of ambition, power, and consequence. The translation brings clarity and accessibility to the language while preserving the intensity and poetry of the original text, creating a dynamic experience for contemporary audiences.

Designed for outdoor performance, the production emphasizes emotional immediacy and storytelling, inviting longtime audiences deeper into the play while offering an engaging entry point for those new to Shakespeare.

The Acting Company includes Phoebe Alva (returning to SBTS; As You Like It), Cylan Brown (returning to SBTS; Hamlet, Henry IV), Peter Green (returning to SBTS; Henry IV), Katie Herling (returning to SBTS; Julius Caesar), Kota Horiuchi (High Potential, Hulu), Savannah Moffat (returning to SBTS; Cardenio), Will Mueller (returning to SBTS; As You Like It), Ashwath Ram (CalArts MFA; Artists at Play), Megan Ruble (returning to SBTS; Julius Caesar), Dylan J. Sampson (Julius Caesar, Brutus), Hadiyyah Noelle Smith (Run Amuck Entertainment co-founder), Jurnee Woo, and Alec Yamartino (returning to SBTS; Hamlet).

The creative team is led by Suzanne Dean (Co-Artistic Director) and Stephanie Coltrin (Co-Artistic Director and Director), and includes Christopher Beyries (Set Designer), A. Jeffrey Schoenberg (Costume Designer), Mike Thal (Sound Designer), Peter Green (Assistant Director), Julia Poprac (Stage Manager), Case Fulton (Tour Manager) Ally Atwell (LACDAC intern) and Tara Donovan (Interim Managing Director).

For nearly three decades, Shakespeare by the Sea has remained committed to presenting theatre that is free and accessible to all. While the 2026 season is moving forward, additional funding is still needed to fully support production and touring costs. The current funding gap is $89,671.

The 2026 tour will launch at the Bandshell at Recreation Park in Long Beach with performances on June 26 and 27, and continues through July 25, traveling to parks across Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Confirmed locations include Long Beach, Rossmoor, Hermosa Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Manhattan Beach, South Pasadena, Encino, Beverly Hills, Aliso Viejo, San Pedro, and Redondo Beach.

As part of a strategically reduced season designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program and carry SBTS into its 30th Anniversary and beyond, this year's tour will visit a more focused group of communities. While a location you have attended in the past may not be included this season, audiences are encouraged to join us at another nearby park and continue to experience free Shakespeare under the stars.

SBTS will return to Point Fermin Park after a two-year absence. While the company continued serving the San Pedro community, its home base for 27 years, with performances at 22nd Street Park, it has deeply missed its Point Fermin audiences. Encouraged by ongoing efforts by community members, Council District 15, and City of LA Department of Recreation and Parks to strengthen support and stewardship of the park, SBTS is thrilled to once again bring free Shakespeare to Point Fermin Park for two performances this summer.

WHAT PRICE FREEDOM to Return at Moving Arts Theatre Ahead of U.S. 250th

Moving Arts Theatre will present a return engagement of What Price Freedom by Tony Blake from July 3–20, 2026. Directed by Darin Anthony, the production stars Rob Nagle as Benjamin Franklin and Brandon Bales as John Adams.

Set during the American Revolution, What Price Freedom follows Franklin and Adams as they attempt a covert peace negotiation with Britain. Forced to share a bed on the eve of the talks, the two founding fathers find themselves at odds over politics, philosophy and the future of a new nation. As the negotiations approach, each must confront what freedom truly means and what sacrifices independence requires.

The production is produced by Dana Schwartz and Laura Buckles.

The creative team includes set and lighting designer Justin Huen, sound designer Warren Davis, Costume Designer Mylette Nora and props designer Dana Schwartz.

Performances will take place Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 4:00 p.m. There will be no performance on July 4.

Gloria Molina Grand Park's Sunday Sessions will return this summer with two afternoons of house music, dancing, local vendors and family-friendly activities in Downtown Los Angeles.

The free events will take place July 19 and August 16, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., inviting Angelenos to gather on the park's performance lawn for live DJ sets, a 21+ beer garden, artisan shopping and community activities as part of The Music Center's Summer of Dance programming.

July 19: Baile World

The July 19 edition will be headlined by Baile World, the Los Angeles-based DJ collective founded by DJ CQUESTT. Known for blending global sounds and dance music traditions, the collective will bring together a lineup featuring Josh Peace, Spiñorita and Bronx-based duo Dos Flakos.

Comprised of brothers Chris and Rich, Dos Flakos draws on Dominican and New York influences to create mixes and remixes that combine Latin House, Tribal House, reggaeton, dancehall and Caribbean rhythms.

August 16: TheyHouse

The August 16 event will spotlight the Black and LGBTQIA+ roots of house music through a lineup curated by Los Angeles DJ and producer Terrell Brooke of TheyHouse.

Featured performers include BLKshine, Packrat and NRS LNDSY, who will spin selections ranging from Chicago house and acid house to Deep House classics.

Headlining the event will be New York duo The Illustrious Blacks. The group, made up of Monstah Black and Manchildblack, is known for blending funk, disco, techno and house music and has released work through Defected Records.

In addition to live music, visitors can browse handcrafted goods from local artisans and small businesses at The Maker's Market. Arts and crafts activities will also be available throughout the afternoon.

Review: ANASTASIA - THE MUSICAL Enchants at La Mirada Theatre

I'll say this now: this Summer's most beguiling, most enchanting theatrical surprise is perhaps the brand new, gorgeously opulent regional production of ANASTASIA - THE MUSICAL, now on stage at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through June 20, 2026.

A visual stunner punctuated by remarkable musicality and an impressive acting ensemble, this epically-staged, winningly triumphant local iteration—helmed by director and choreographer Parker Esse—is, dare I say, more Broadway than Broadway, from its thrilling technical aspects and grandiose (yet still grounded) storytelling to its superb, talent-bursting cast led by a fierce star turn by Lena Ceja in the title role (her La Mirada debut) that audiences will remember for a long time.

I contend that this new La Mirada production is a delightful surprise only because the last time I saw this musical on stage, it was its Broadway national tour back in the Fall of 2019, which was, for the most part, an acceptably fine show, though not quite exceptionally memorable (you can read my review of that production HERE).

By contrast, seeing this exquisite, engagingly paced new production almost erases that previously okay experience, as if I'm seeing the show for the very first time and in its most flattering phase of existence.

The stage musical, of course, has some noteworthy roots.

A 2017 Broadway stage adaptation inspired by the popular 1997 Fox Animation Studios musical film, this "live-action" iteration has been reimagined with a more historically-grounded sensibility that discards the film's more magical elements in favor of highlighting one of history's most intriguing mysteries.

Here, the narrative eschews that creepy, supernatural, magic-wielding zombie villain Rasputin (and his talking, joke-spewing bat minion Bartok) and, instead, leans in more towards a story that tries to uncover the clues behind a longstanding rumor-myth that circulated for decades inside post-Soviet Revolution Russia, following the slaying of the entire Romanov Royal Family in July of 1918.

That rumor, of course, was that there was a possible lone survivor that managed to escape that mass-assignation that took the lives of Imperial Russian Tzar Nicholas II and his entire family by the Bolsheviks, the very movement that sparked the pro-Socialist revolution.

This understandable narrative pivot also spills over to the very vibe of the show, which now more deeply explores the dire ramifications of that mass-assassination on the country and its citizenry, who have since been under strict Bolshevik control, and where travel papers are as monumentally important as food and shelter are to one's survival.

As expected, many of the familiar songs from the animated film—with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, the same team behind the music of RAGTIME—have been migrated over to the stage show alongside many new songs that expand its scope, all enveloped by a new book written by celebrated playwright Terrence McNally (who also wrote the book for RAGTIME).

It can be argued that the musical's greatest strength lies in its ability to blend spectacle with genuine emotional stakes. McNally's book wisely shifts the narrative away from the film's fantasy aspects and instead grounds the story within the documented political and social upheaval surrounding the Russian Revolution—a not-so-subtle sign that this is not your younger self's Princess cartoon movie anymore.

This inevitable creative decision certainly gives the musical a richer dramatic foundation, allowing audiences to connect more deeply with the characters' personal struggles without any pesky magical wizards and smart-alecky talking animals getting in the way. Here ANASTASIA now feels less like a Disney-esque magical princess fantasy and more like a poignant—and relatable—coming-of-age journey, albeit still with a tiara or two in the mix.

The resulting show, honestly, initially felt well-intentioned but mostly uneven on the surface, as if the stage iteration—like its title character—was still suffering an identity crisis.

Cut to June 2026 and the stage of La Mirada Theatre—presenting a production by McCoy Rigby Entertainment—and somehow, miraculously, the bones of that Broadway stage musical has been reconfigured to look and feel like a newly rediscovered lush epic on an even grander scale that is also bathed in an emotionally grounded, intimately human sensibility. From its glorious start to its hopeful, even tear-inducing ending, this production has turned a previously dismissible show into a must-see musical spectacular.

Able to balance sweeping romance, historical intrigue, and emotional intimacy with elegance and showmanship, this winning new production of ANASTASIA - THE MUSICAL effortlessly retains much of the heart, earnestness, and melodic familiarity that made the animated film a cherished favorite. And with this stage adaptation broadening its scope considerably, the more fairy-tale/supernatural-leaning original adventure can now be separately enjoyed here as a more mature meditation on identity, love, loss, resiliency, and finding one's true home.

Like the animated film, the stage iteration also follows a young woman named Anya (played with palpable gusto by the radiant Ceja), a spunky, self-reliant orphan suffering with fragmented memories of her past. A self-protective survivor by nature, her instincts encourage her to embark on a journey to find the truth of her real identity.

That journey takes her from bleak post-revolutionary St. Petersburg, Russia all the way to the glittering allure of 1920's Paris, France, where the musical traces Anya's path from troubled uncertainty to hopeful self-discovery.

This leads to an encounter with two opportunistic con men: handsome and street-smart Dmitry Dunya (played charmingly by Dillon Klena) and former Imperial Court member Vlad Popov (the very funny Peyton Crim), whom she initially seeks out to acquire some forged (but convincing) travel documents.

It just so happens, however, that the men are searching—actually, "auditioning"—for a woman they can train and pass off as the long-lost Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov to the family's only living relative, the understandably skeptical and disheartened Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna (the regal Suzanna Guzmán), Anastasia's grandmother.

As Anya joins Dmitry and Vlad’s scheme, unexpected truths begin to surface.

Along the way, she, of course, develops a deep emotional connection with Dmitry while unknowingly attracting the attention of determined Soviet officer Gleb Vaganov (the superbly menacing Richard Bermudez), whose own family's history is intertwined with the fall of the Romanovs, and is, thus, hell bent on her capture, just in case she really does turn out to be a surviving member of that lineage.

The character of Gleb is the stage adaptation's most significant addition to the story: essentially a reality-based, non-magical substitute for the evil wizard Rasputin in the film. While, admittedly, I found the character a bit of an intrusion in the national tour production I first saw in 2019, here the character feels much more complex and intriguing, thanks in no small part to Bermudez's outstanding, shudder-inducing performance. Rather than being just another conventional villain, the production offers him up as a truly conflicted antagonist whose loyalties are shaped by history, duty, and inherited trauma. His presence here introduces moral complexities that enrich the narrative much more than in the touring iteration, reminding audiences that history is rarely divided into heroes and villains as neatly as fairy tales suggest.

Once in Paris, the trio seeks to convince the Dowager Empress that Anya is indeed her missing granddaughter, with the aid of the Dowager Empress' loyal lady-in-waiting, Countess Lily (hilarious scene-stealer Sarah Wolter), who, by the way, apparently has a secret night life tearing up the dance floors of Paris.

As memories slowly return and long-buried wounds are confronted, Anya must ultimately decide whether her future will be defined by the mystery of her past or by the life she chooses for herself.

An absolutely lavish, stunning production filled with visual and sonic wows, La Mirada's production of ANASTASIA is as thoughtful and empowering as it is just incredible, heartfelt entertainment.

Flaherty and Ahrens' score sounds wonderfully lush coming from the orchestra under the baton of musical director Ryan O'Connell, which beautifully bridges the familiar and the new. Fan-favorite songs such as "Journey to the Past" and "Once Upon a December" retain their emotional gravitas while integrating seamlessly alongside newly crafted material that expands character development and thematic depth. The music consistently captures the show's sense of longing and possibility, often elevating scenes from simple narrative progression into moments of genuine emotional revelation. I don't know about you, but even the next day, I was still humming the melody of "Journey to the Past."

Visually, the production is often a breathtaking theatrical experience. Its fluid transitions between Russia and Paris—frequently enhanced through projections designed by Aaron Rhyne and cinematic-inspired staging techniques enacted by director Esse—create an expansive and lyrical sense of movement and adventure. Esse, also tasked with choreography, provides the show with plenty of dazzling dance sequences that add to the overall grandeur.

The production's sublime design elements—particularly Andrew Hammer's sets and Ricky Laurie's gorgeous period costumes—work in concert to evoke both the splendor of a vanished Imperial world and the vibrant energy of a rapidly changing Europe. These visual flourishes never feel merely decorative, but, rather, they reinforce the story's recurring themes of memory, transformation, and the passage of time. That train sequence alone is an enchanting hybrid of theater and technology that gives the show its luxe epic qualities.

But, of course, at the endearing core of ANASTASIA - THE MUSICAL is the story of Anya herself, who in this excellent production proves herself to be one of the more compelling modern musical heroines. Unlike many of her protagonist peers whose destinies are determined by external forces, Anya's journey—so beautifully and genuinely portrayed by Ceja—is fundamentally about self-definition. Her search for answers becomes a universal exploration of belonging, memory, and the human desire to understand where one comes from. Even when the plot veers into romantic or historical territory, the emotional core remains firmly anchored in Anya's relatable quest for connection and identity.

Ceja evokes that longing just on her face alone. And, dang, she then starts singing her heart out on top of that.

Armed with endearing pluckiness and palpably heartfelt expressions, Ceja's excellent performance elevates everything around her, creating a groundswell of enjoyable theatricality that, frankly, touches every aspect of the show. Her touching "I Want" song "In My Dreams" gives but a taste of her impressive abilities as both a singer and an actress.

By the time she reaches the final song of the first act, "Journey to the Past," she has truly won the audience over—so much so that we are convinced she really is the missing Romanov Princess. With every appearance, Ceja mesmerizes with her facial expressions and inspired acting choices and, yes, her vocal prowess. She is a sparkling revelation in this show, which was only merely hinted at during her performance as Mimi in Chance Theater's superb intimate production of RENT a few years ago.

And speaking of Chance Theater, I also first discovered Klena in a small role in an intimate production of PARADE at that same OC theater. It has been truly great watching (and hearing) his impressive evolution and maturation as a musical theater performer and, now, as a confident leading man (I last saw him belt crazy high notes in Musical Theatre West's production of NEWSIES a few years ago, too). Even more impressive is that Klena is able to create his own notable version of Dmitry, a role that his own older brother Derek originated on Broadway. And Klena's chemistry with both Ceja and his cohort Crim are quite fun to watch.

But also quite enjoyable: the comedic duo of Crim and Wolter, who, arguably, deserve their own spin-off musical (or, at the very least, their own web series, in character, natch).

Overall, La Mirada's impressive presentation of this musical adaptation makes a compelling case to only stage the show their way, because what they've fashioned together for this production is truly magical (even without the magical elements from the film).

What makes ANASTASIA - THE MUSICAL resonate most deeply now—and especially in this beautiful production—is its emotional maturity. As someone who grew up loving the original animated film, it is only fitting to want to see a "grown-up," more sophisticated take on the same musical, particularly since the original already had such grown-up themes at its heart, scored by none other than Flaherty and Ahrens, and written by McNally—folks who know a thing or two about history-tinged epics.

Beneath the lavish costumes, opulent visuals, romantic melodies, and historical intrigue lies a surprisingly poignant reflection on the meaning of family—both real and found. The musical suggests that identity is not solely determined by bloodlines or royal titles but by the connections we forge and by the choices we make. In doing so, the show transcends its fairy-tale origins and becomes something far more affecting and deeply meaningful.

Like its heroine, ANASTASIA - THE MUSICAL ultimately finds its greatest strength not in confirming a legend, but in embracing the exciting uncertainty of the journey itself. Esse and company have created a lush, heartfelt, Broadway-caliber musical production that combines theatrical spectacle with genuine emotional substance—a stirring reminder that sometimes the search for who we are can be the most extraordinary adventure of all.

Los Angeles Philharmonic Appoints Vineta Sareika as Concertmaster

Vineta Sareika has been appointed Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Sareika, an internationally acclaimed violinist, chamber musician, educator and orchestral leader, will assume the role in the 2026/27 season.

The appointment was made following a comprehensive search process led by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in consultation with incoming Music Director Daniel Harding.

As Concertmaster, Sareika will help shape the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s distinctive sound through her leadership of the musicians, performances of major violin solos and serving as a vital artistic liaison between the conductor and orchestra. As both a musical ambassador and trusted colleague, Sareika will help foster unity within the ensemble while ensuring the highest standards of artistic excellence on stage.

Sareika made history as the first woman to hold the position of First Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, serving from 2023 to 2025. She has also appeared as guest concertmaster with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dresden Philharmonic, Brussels Philharmonic, and La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra in Brussels. Earlier in her career, she served as Principal Concertmaster of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.

Latvian violinist Vineta Sareika's multifaceted career spans a wide range of activities from soloist to orchestra concertmaster, primaria of the Artemis Quartet, professor and jury member. Laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition in 2009 and recipient of several Echo Classic Awards, Sareika has performed as a soloist with the London Philharmonia, Belgian National Orchestra, Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Lisbon Philharmonic, Latvian National Orchestra and London Chamber Orchestra. In addition to her concert activities, Sareika currently teaches chamber music at the Universität der Künste Berlin and serves as a jury member in the most prestigious violin and chamber music competitions worldwide. She plays an Antonio Stradivari violin (1683), generously on loan to her from the Ruggieri Foundation.

Staged within The Abbey — the world-famous West Hollywood LGBTQ+ venue — Hedwig and The Angry Inch will be produced for a one-night-only engagement, Thursday, June 25, 8:30pm.

This full-scale immersive production will take place throughout The Chapel. The Chapel at The Abbey opened in 2016, functioning as an expansion of the iconic nightclub.

Folks can expect a fully staged show — book and score — composed of traditional staging, numbers by the bars & booths, as well as nods to the film.

Leading the company is Jed Levinson, who directs the production and is starring in the titular role. Levinson is a graduate of the USC School of Dramatic Arts, and was the university's 2025 recipient of the Stanley Musgrove Award for Most Outstanding Creative Talent.

Joining him is Peta Jolly, who will portray Yitzhak. The band will consist of Madeline Clara Chang (Music Director; Keyboard), Asher Levich (Guitar), Huckleberry Young (Bass), & Calvin Lundin (Drums). Lighting and Projection Design is by Billie Oleyar.

Producer Riley Reed — founder of State Music Group — is overseeing the production. Reed is about to make the move to NYC, for further business ventures, but when asked about the project, commented, “this feels like the perfect send-off.”

The production is partnering with GLAAD, dedicating a portion of proceeds from the production to ensure continued representation in media.

Colburn to Launch 2026-27 Season With Star Guest Conductors and Artists

Colburn, the world-renowned institute for music and dance, today announced its 2026–27 season of orchestral, chamber, recital and dance performances showcasing the exceptional artistry of Colburn students, many of whom are on the cusp of launching professional careers.

Presented on the Colburn campus and throughout Los Angeles, performances are free of charge or offered at low cost, reflecting Colburn's commitment to expanding access to the arts for audiences across Los Angeles.

The 2026–27 season marks Colburn's final season before the opening of its transformational 100,000-square-foot campus expansion designed by Frank Gehry which will significantly increase Colburn's world-class training and performance facilities for music and dance. At its heart will be the 1,000-seat Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall, a much-needed in-the-round mid-sized performance space. When completed in fall 2027, the expansion will create the largest concentration of Gehry-designed buildings in the world.

“As Colburn prepares to open its Frank Gehry-designed campus expansion in September 2027, we are poised to enter an inspiring new chapter in our history and reach an important milestone in our evolution on Grand Avenue,” said President and CEO Sel Kardan. “The 2026-27 season continues to showcase our extraordinary students and faculty and welcome acclaimed guest artists from around the world. Our campus expansion will embody the same spirit of excellence, curiosity, and creativity that defines the Colburn experience today.”

Colburn's signature performances return in the 2026-27 season, including the Colburn Orchestra series, featuring the flagship ensemble of Colburn's Conservatory of Music, and the Colburn Chamber Players series, an exploration of chamber music in all its forms, with students performing alongside esteemed faculty and celebrated guest artists. Through Colburn Presents, acclaimed ensembles, soloists, and chamber musicians take the stage for special performances. Music Restored: The Ziering-Conlon Center for Exiled and Suppressed Composers continues its important work shining a light on composers whose lives and careers were destroyed or disrupted by the Nazi regime. The season also features performances by students of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, from tap and ballet to jazz and hip-hop.

Distinguished conductors leading the Colburn Orchestra include Mexican conductor, Grammy-winner, and North Carolina Symphony Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto; British conductor and Music of the Baroque music director Dame Jane Glover; French conductor and Music Director of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra Ludovic Morlot; Director of Conducting Studies, Distinguished Visiting Faculty at Julliard and former music director of St. Louis Symphony Orchestra David Robertson; Grammy-winner and Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra JoAnn Falletta; and Music Director of the Colburn Orchestra, Yehuda Gilad.

Salonen Fellow Mert Yalniz will share the podium with Prieto in October to conduct the Colburn Orchestra at The Soraya in a program of Arturo Márquez, Kevin Puts, and Manuel De Falla. Yalniz joined Colburn's Conservatory of Music's Negaunee Conducting Program in 2024. Led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, who holds the Maestro Ernst H. Katz Chair of Conducting Studies, the pre-professional program offers a unique opportunity for a select group of students, known as Salonen Fellows, to refine their craft and prepare for careers on the world's most prestigious stages under Salonen's guidance.

Esteemed faculty and guest artists appearing on the Colburn Chamber Players series include Brentano Quartet cellist Nina Lee; internationally in-demand pianist Jonathan Biss; Professor of Chamber Music for the Colburn Conservatory and renowned violist Jonathan Brown; leading violist and Richard D. A special immersive musical experience, Mayrig: A Mother's Voice, by Karen Ouzounian and Lembit Beecher, explores themes of family, memory, resilience, and identity through the human voice. The work weaves together recordings of Ouzounian's mother and grandmother, Armenian melodies from Anatolia, songs and stories from their post-genocide Lebanese home, and music by Armenian singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour. In collaboration with Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute.

A performing arts institution located in the heart of Los Angeles, the COLBURN SCHOOL trains students from beginners to those about to embark on professional careers. In 2024, the Colburn School broke ground on a transformational campus expansion designed by Frank Gehry. Located across the street from the School's existing campus at the intersection of Olive and Second Streets, the building will enable the School to expand its mission of presenting programs for the public. Gehry's design includes a 1,000-seat in-the-round concert hall named for Terri and Jerry Kohl, five professional-sized dance studios including a 100-seat studio theater, and gardens that bring fresh air and green spaces to the downtown landscape. The expansion will more than double the facilities for the School's Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, creating one of the most comprehensive dance education complexes in Southern California.

SUNSET CONCERTS at the Skirball to Feature Terrace Martin, Cory Henry & More

The Skirball Cultural Center has announced the lineup for the twenty-ninth season of its free outdoor Sunset Concerts series. Running July 16 through August 6, the series will feature eight artists whose work reflects the breadth and evolution of jazz in America.

Since 1997, Sunset Concerts has brought audiences together through free live music performances in the Skirball's Taper Courtyard. This year's edition commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States by showcasing artists whose work is rooted in jazz while pushing the genre in new directions.

"This year's series celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States by featuring eight artists that form a cross-section of one of our country's defining art forms – jazz," the Skirball said in announcing the lineup.

Artists featured this season include Los Angeles-based performers Terrace Martin and Katalyst, Grammy-winning musician Cory Henry, acclaimed harpist Brandee Younger, drummer and producer Kassa Overall, Chicago post-rock pioneers Tortoise, sacred steel group The Campbell Brothers, and Mississippi family band Annie and the Caldwells.

Marlene Braga, Vice President of Public Programs at the Skirball, noted that jazz reflects many of the values at the heart of the institution's mission, including innovation, resilience, and cultural exchange.

The nine-piece ensemble from Inglewood blends contemporary jazz with experimental influences. Led by drummer, composer, and producer Greg Paul, Katalyst released its debut album Nine Lives in 2020 and followed it with Speakeasy in 2025.

Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles

Grammy-winning artist Cory Henry recently earned the Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album for Church. A former member of Snarky Puppy, Henry has built a successful solo career spanning gospel, R&B, jazz, and funk.

Brandee Younger

Thursday, July 23 at 7:00 p.m.

Harpist, composer, and bandleader Brandee Younger draws inspiration from spiritual jazz, classical music, R&B, and hip-hop. Her work has earned Grammy and NAACP Image Award recognition, and her latest album, Gadabout Season, was released in 2025.

Terrace Martin Plays Miles

Multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Terrace Martin will honor the legacy of Miles Davis during a centennial celebration performance. Martin has collaborated with artists including Kendrick Lamar, Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, and Lalah Hathaway.

Drummer, producer, rapper, and bandleader Kassa Overall is known for blending jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music. His latest album, Cream, reimagines songs from the 1990s and 2000s through a jazz lens.

Tortoise

Chicago-based Tortoise has been a pioneering force in post-rock and experimental music since 1990. The band's genre-defying catalog has influenced generations of musicians.

The Campbell Brothers

The Campbell Brothers are celebrated ambassadors of the sacred steel tradition, combining gospel, blues, funk, and rock influences. Their performances have been featured at venues including Lincoln Center and The Kennedy Center.

Annie and the Caldwells

Led by Annie Caldwell, the Mississippi-based family group performs a blend of disco soul and gospel-infused music. Their latest album, Can't Lose My (Soul), was released in 2025.

Known for his portrayals of legendary composers in his acclaimed solo productions, Felder turns his attention inward in Hershey Felder: The Piano & Me. The new play traces his journey from his childhood in Montreal as the son of Polish and Hungarian immigrants to an international career that has spanned more than 6,000 performances around the world.

Through personal stories and live performances of works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Bartók, and others, Felder explores how discovering the piano connected him to his heritage while opening the door to a life shaped by music, adventure, heartbreak, and human connection.

MISS MAGNOLIA BEAUMONT GOES TO PROVINCETOWN to Make LA Debut at Hollywood Fringe

Miss Magnolia Beaumont Goes to Provincetown, written and performed by Joe Hutcheson, will make its Los Angeles debut as part of the 2026 Hollywood Fringe Festival. The production will play a limited engagement from June 17-28 at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Davidson/Valentini Theatre.

The solo comedy recently returned in a newly updated version after earning accolades at festivals across the country, including the Overall Excellence Award at the New York International Fringe Festival, a Critics' Pick of the Fringe honor at the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, and a Fruitie Award at the Fresh Fruit Festival. The production was also recently featured in New York City's Spark Theatre Festival.

Miss Magnolia Beaumont Goes to Provincetown follows a Southern debutante who chokes to death on a pork rib and finds herself inhabiting the body of a gay, middle-aged New Yorker traveling to Provincetown, Massachusetts. As the two become acquainted, Magnolia helps Joe confront some of the darker voices within himself.

The production will be performed on June 17, 21, 25, 27, and 28 at the Davidson/Valentini Theatre as part of the 2026 Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Heartworm, a new sci-fi drama featuring Tony Award nominee and Rocky Horror star Amber Gray, will hold its SoCal Premiere at the 29th Annual Dances With Films: LA on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at 4:00 PM at the TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood.

Set in a near future, Heartworm follows Avena (Gray), a bereaved mother shattered by the loss of their child. While she battles to pull her family back from the edge of disappearance, her husband Mark (Juan Riedinger) has retreated into NeuraLife, a digital ecosystem indistinguishable from reality, which offers advanced AI-generated simulations capable of recreating memory, voice, and personality. Avena is soon forced to confront the question at the center of the film: when does memory become a dangerous substitute for acceptance?

The movie marks the feature film debut of Gray, who is known for her performance as Persephone in Hadestown and can currently be seen in the Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show. It also stars Juan Riedinger, Tony Award winner Lillias White, Ellie Reine, and Derrick Baskin.

Written and directed by Miriam Louise Arens and Mitchell Arens, Heartworm held its World Premiere at the 2026 Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival in Silicon Valley in March. It has earned Official Selection laurels from Cinequest 2026, Dances With Films: LA 2026, Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, and Woods Hole Film Festival.

Miriam and Mitchell Arens are NYU Tisch Asia alumni whose work has screened at Sundance, Cannes, Venice, SXSW, TIFF, IDFA, and Berlinale. Heartworm marks their feature directorial debut, produced by Normandie Films.

F**KING STRANGERS World Premiere to be Presented at Echo Theater Company

The Echo Theater Company will present the world premiere of F**king Strangers, a dark comedy by Erik Patterson, commissioned by the company and directed by artistic director Chris Fields. Performances run July 18 through August 24 at Atwater Village Theatre. Three Pay-What-You-Want preview performances are set for July 15, 16 and 17.

In F**king Strangers, Patterson delivers a twisted, hilarious and unexpectedly moving story about loneliness, desire, family secrets and the strange ways people try to save one another.

Ru hasn’t left his bedroom in six years. Mick can’t stop paying for affection. Julianne mourns the life she never pursued. Dylan sells companionship to anyone who can afford him. As real-life and online obsessions blur into genuine intimacy, long-buried truths begin to surface. What starts as role-playing and fantasy spirals into a wildly unpredictable collision of sex, secrecy, family and redemption — with consequences that are both shocking and wickedly funny.

The production reunites the cast of Echo Theater Company’s hit production of Clarkston by Samuel D. Hunter: Michael Sturgis stars as Ru, with Sean Luc Rogers as Dylan and Tasha Ames as Julianne. Mick is played by longtime Echo company member James Tupper, whom audiences may recognize from HBO’s Big Little Lies, NBC’s Men in Trees, Mercy, and ABC’s Revenge.

The creative team features scenic designer Amanda Knehans, lighting designer Matt Richter, sound designer M. Glenn Shuster, Costume Designer Dianne K Graebner and fight choreographer Tristan Waldron. Jasmine Leung serves as production stage manager.

THE ASSET to Make World Premiere at Dances with Films Festival

The ASSET a new documentary short from award-winning director Ravit Markus (Nina Is An Athlete), is premiering on June 22 as part of the 2026 Dances with Films festival lineup at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

The ASSET follows renowned American trauma surgeon Dr. Anna Goldenberg as she races to fulfill the dying wish of a young Israeli colleague by bringing a lifesaving surgical training program to a region at the moment it is needed most.

As war, political tension, and mounting urgency threaten the mission at every turn, she is drawn into a deeply personal journey that forces her to confront her own identity and discover the profound role medicine can play in bridging divides.

Directed with intimacy and urgency, The ASSET captures the high-stakes realities of trauma care while illuminating the human stories behind the headlines. The film was produced by Adam Teitelbaum and directed by Markus.

ENORMOUS THINGS: THE MUSICAL to Return to Hollywood Fringe at Second Place Studios

Really Big Spoon Productions will present (for the 3rd time!) Enormous Things: The Musical. Created by Sarah Lew & Chris Gale, it was originally conceived for the Spaghetti Festival at the Elysian Theater, had two sold-out runs, and is now back for Hollywood Fringe at the new pop up theater called Second Place Studios (former site of the Second City Hollywood).

Enormous Things: The Musical is the (totally made-up) bio-musical of Claes Oldenburg, the real-life sculptor of enormous ordinary things. In this story, he's making his enormous things because he's in love with and inspired by a giant, Claramonde. When they get separated he goes on a journey seeking the help of his sculptor friends - Yayoi Kusama, Michelangelo, Alexander Calder and the diabolical Jeff Koons - to try to get his love (and his inspiration!) back. Jeff Koons is the villain. It's about why we choose to make anything at all, and it's full of heart and bits and most everything is made out of cardboard.

Written by Sarah Lew and Chris Gale, the show is directed by Lew and executive produced by Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls). A majority of the songs are written by Chris Gale, with additional music by Ellie DiBeradino, Danthony, Swardy, and Liz Fitzgerald. Additional book writing, sound design, music production and orchestration by Ellie DiBeradino. All of the incredible cardboard art designed and made by ReMac. Tech direction by Alex DiBeradino. Lighting design by Zack Guiler. Produced by Jonah Goldberg and Jacquelyn Landgraf. Choreography by Steven Jasso and Dahlya Glick. It takes a lot of people to make a musical!

AMERICAN IDIOT to Open at Hollywood's Broadwater Theater with Conundrum Theatre Company

Four women badass women lose their heads (both figuratively and literally) in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s “La Terreur.” Playwright Olympe de Gouges (played by Amie Farrell), assassin Charlotte Corday (Sarah Pierce), former queen and fan of ribbons Marie Antoinette (Lyndsi Larose), and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle (Nondumiso Tembe) hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris.

This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. Performances continue through June 28.

Hailing from the birthplace of American music, New Orleans' Tank and the Bangas serve as a contemporary embodiment of the city's musical legacy and the country's cultural fabric through their mix of spoken word poetry, jazz, soul and hip-hop. Butter Funk Family honors funk's deep roots in American rhythm and blues, soul, and jazz, creating music tailor-made for a magnanimous celebration.

Four years later, the band had a viral breakthrough as the winners of the NPR Tiny Desk Contest. Following their 2025 Grammy win for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, Tank and the Bangas arrive at the Skirball on the heels of their forthcoming album The Last Balloon, to be released May 15, 2026. A dynamic blend of soul, hip-hop, and forward-thinking R&B, The Last Balloon is the latest chapter for the New Orleans ensemble renowned for wildly interactive live shows packed with call-and-response moments, handclaps, and joyful grooves that turn the room into a shared celebration.

"Dres the Thief" is a dark, richly animated film built around the character of Dres Ladro who is based on the lead designer at Descendants of Thieves who sets the tone for the exclusive men's fashion line.

Based on the anecdotal life of the designer, the film shows how the young Ladro is slowly drawn to his destiny of design by stealing several of his father's shirts and remaking them into his own unique style.

The confrontation scene at the family dinner table is fraught with tension as Father shares his frustration about the expensive missing shirts with his Wife while the family dog growls ominously. Dres rushes back to his room and begins another design with a devilish yet determined expression.

The film is the brainchild of Descendant of Thieves founder Matteo Maniatty, who wrote the script, and Suwana Perry, co-owner and COO who served as executive producer. Tomas Vagara, the highly talented and experienced director and animator, was brought in after a meeting of the two men over a lunch in Barcelona.

Maniatty recalls, "From our first conversation, I could tell Tomas saw stories differently. There was a depth to his thinking and visual imagination that immediately stood out. I left that meeting feeling like I had found the person who could bring Dres the Thief to life." The script had been sitting in a vault, awaiting its fate. As the two discussed the project, they discovered a shared commitment to craft, process, and the belief that meaningful work is built with intention, not shortcuts."

The completely hand-drawn and richly textured animation is a hallmark for Vergara who also created "Isolated" and "Quimera". It sets the tone for the story with same style that D.O.T. is famed for.

Descendant of Thieves was founded by Matteo Maniatty alongside the enigmatic Dres Ladro to build something that rejects the mass, assembly-line sameness of fashion. From the start, two rules were set: every piece must be made in tightly controlled batches, and the true identity of Dres Ladro would remain undisclosed.

The short will be screened on June 21 at 11:45AM as part of Comp Shorts Block 4 at the TCL theater at 6925 Hollywood Blvd.

"WHERE WE PLAYED: VOICES FROM THE FIRE", an impactful documentary short telling of childrens' experiences of the Los Angeles wildfires, will compete part of the Doc Shorts Block 3 at the TCL Chinese Theatre, Tuesday, June 23rd, 6PM.

In January 2025, devastating wildfires swept through Los Angeles. Through firsthand interviews, children reflect on what they experienced, what they lost, what they carried with them, and how their lives have been forever changed; while simultaneously holding onto hope for what comes next.

Co-directed by Nat Wolff and Austin Cauldwell, the film is presented by Zenosyne Media, produced by Mina Sundwall, Eliza Paprin and Julia Pitch, who also served as Cinematographer. The film was edited by Ben Schwaeber.

According to Wolff and Cauldwell: "In the wake of the fires, much of the conversation focused on what had been lost: homes, schools, and a sense of stability. What felt missing were the voices of the children living through it. Rather than speaking about them, we wanted to listen to them. So we set out to create a space where kids and families could share their experiences in their own words. What we found was not only grief, but resilience, optimism, and humor. Even in the aftermath of tragedy, these children continue to imagine, adapt, and grow. Their stories reminded us that they are not just witnesses to disaster, but rather, they are participants in the future being shaped around them.

Our hope is that this film encourages audiences to think about the world we are leaving for our children. It will be their world. They deserve to have a voice in it."

Nat Wolff is a writer/director/actor/producer/musician whose short film Youngest was a HollyShorts Film Festival favorite and praised by Filmmaker Magazine. As an actor, his credits include The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, Palo Alto, The Kill Team, and Amazon's The Consultant.

Austin Cauldwell is a Los Angeles-based writer/director/actor and acting teacher. He recently wrote and directed his short film IDYLL, which premiered at Florida Film Festival in April 2026. As an actor he appeared in numerous credits on stage, film, and TV.

Mina Sundwall is an Actress/Producer and President of Zenosyne Media. As an actor, her credits include Lost in Space, Legends of Tomorrow, God of War: Ragnarok, Maggie's Plan, and more. As a producer, she works in development and production of films and proofs of concept, including Austin Cauldwell's Idyll, Ally Ioannides's Sack of Bones, Gamble, Youth, Jane Anonymous.

Eliza Paprin is an Actress/Writer/Producer who studied film as a Dean's Scholar at Emory University. She is the creator/lead of Not Like Other Girls on YouTube. Other credits include: Lola, Black Girl Day Off, Take Your Time, and Midtown Moments. With her passion for film extending behind the camera, she has served as an Associate Producer on Austin Cauldwell's Idyll.

Julia Pitch is a Director and DoP signed at Six Twenty Six. She has directed work for commercial clients such as Spotify, Ford, Verizon, Peloton and Starbucks. She was an additional Cinematographer on On the Record, a feature documentary about the Me Too movement that went to Sundance in 2020. Her visual sensibilities are influenced by her fine art background, and she studied Illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Opera Laguna to Present THE STUDENT PRINCE at Laguna Playhouse

Opera Laguna will present a one-night-only, semi-staged concert of The Student Prince on Friday, July 3, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. at the Laguna Playhouse.

Directed by Josh Shaw and starring tenor Arnold Livingston Geis as Prince Karl Franz, the operetta tells the story of a prince who must ultimately choose between his devotion to Kathie, a commoner, and the royal duties that require him to become king and marry Princess Margaret.

“We feel a very special connection to this show, and the stage where it will be performed,” said co-founder of Opera Laguna, Oriana Geis Falla, who recently won Artist of the Year at the 2026 Laguna Beach Arts Alliance Art Star Awards together with co-founder Arnold Livingston Geis. “Not only did Arnold's birth father sing it at Heidelberg Castle where the story takes place, but the Laguna Playhouse opened its first permanent theater the same year that The Student Prince opened on Broadway. We're excited to have the rare opportunity to showcase opera in Laguna Beach and to embark on what we know will be a beautiful partnership with Opera Laguna and the Laguna Playhouse and we look forward to continuing to provide our audiences an experience to have ‘a day at the beach, a night at the opera!'”

Debuting on Broadway in 1924, The Student Prince was the most-performed and longest-running Broadway show of the 1920s. Based on the German play Old Heidelberg by Wilhelm Meyer-Förster with music by Sigmund Romberg and lyrics by Dorothy Donnelly, the show was a Prohibition-era smash hit that toured for nearly two decades and was adapted into a silent film in 1927.

Sent incognito to the University of Heidelberg to experience life beyond the palace, Prince Karl Franz of Karlsberg discovers friendship, freedom, and first love in the warm-hearted Kathie, niece of the owner of the Inn of the Three Gold Apples. As their romance blossoms, Karl Franz is called home by duty when his grandfather, the King, falls gravely ill, forcing him to honor a long-arranged engagement to Princess Margaret. Though he promises to return, the demands of the crown—and his eventual ascension to the throne—keep him away for years. When he finally returns to Heidelberg, he hopes to reunite with Kathie, only to learn that she has seemingly moved on. Accepting that personal happiness must yield to responsibility, Karl Franz embraces his role as king, while Kathie remains the great love of his life and Heidelberg endures as a cherished symbol of youth, friendship, and lost possibility.
