BENEVOLENT to Make World Premiere With Good Apples Collective at IATI Theater

Good Apples Collective (Sophie McIntosh and Nina Goodheart, Artistic Directors), an orchard for new theater, will present the World Premiere of benevolent by Sophie McIntosh (Road Kills; cunnicularii, macbitches), directed by Nina Goodheart (Road Kills; cunnicularii) at IATI Theater (64 E 4th St, New York, NY 10003), August 14-September 5.

Set in 1917, benevolent follows four inmates consigned to Inwood Benevolent Home, a draconian reformatory for fallen and friendless girls. They forge unlikely connections as they pass their days on laundry duty, and, when one of their group finds herself in trouble, the others must decide how much they're willing to risk to help her.

Tickets ($25 Starving Artist; $40 General; $60 Supporter of the Arts) are available for advance purchase at www.goodapplescollective.com. The performance will run approximately 100 minutes, with no intermission.

Sophie McIntosh (Playwright) (she/her) is a New York-based playwright and theatermaker. Her writing gives voice to women and queer folks, examines life in the small-town Midwest, and explores how our interactions with the natural world reflect back our own humanity. Sophie is the co-founder of Good Apples Collective, a developmental orchard for new theatrical works that she co-leads with her frequent collaborator Nina Goodheart. Recent productions of Sophie's work include the world premiere of macbitches (New York Times Critic's Pick), the premieres of Road Kills (recommended by the New York Times and New Yorker), cunnicularii, and cityscrape with Good Apples Collective, and Eleven Weeks of Nuclear Summer at Notre Dame University and the University of Michigan. Sophie's plays have also been developed at Pioneer Theatre Company, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, the Bechdel Group, the Unicorn Theatre, Atlanta Shakespeare Company, Breaking & Entering Theatre Collective, The Tank, The Brick, and the 24 Hour Plays: Nationals. Her play macbitches has been produced more than 30 times across the country, alongside international productions in Canada and Australia. She is a proud recipient of a BA in drama from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and recently graduated with an MFA in playwriting from Columbia University.

Nina Goodheart (Director) (she/her) is a director and producer based in New York. She is passionate about creating theater that builds community, centers people of marginalized genders, and demands an emotional response. Her theater company Good Apples Collective, which she co-founded with playwright Sophie McIntosh, was recently hailed in HowlRound as part of "the next great leap in theatre." Selected directing: the sold-out and critically acclaimed runs of Sophie McIntosh's Road Kills, cunnicularii, and cityscrape; Harriet Steinke's miniature opera Monna Innominata (finalist for Beth Morrison Projects' NEXTGEN:3 competition); and Emily Bice's eco-dramedy before the flood (Chain Theatre). Selected resident/associate directing: Gabriel Byrne's Walking with Ghosts on Broadway, Fiddler on the Roof starring Jason Alexander, The Seasons at Opera Philadelphia, Mindplay at Arena Stage. She has had the pleasure of working with directors such as Diane Paulus, Whitney White, Lonny Price, Lila Neugebauer, Andrew Neisler, Zack Winokur, Mary Birnbaum, and Stephen Wadsworth, as well as organizations including the American Repertory Theater, Roundabout, Lincoln Center, Second Stage, NYSAF, and Climan Producing. BA Yale, private study in opera directing at Juilliard.

Good Apples Collective is a developmental orchard for new theatrical works that expose abuses of power, challenge taboos around desire and sexuality, and uplift the voices of queer and gender marginalized communities. Co-led by director Nina Goodheart and playwright Sophie McIntosh, Good Apples Collective empowers emerging artists to create work with trusted creative peers and revolt against oppressive hierarchies that undercut and isolate new voices. www.goodapplescollective.com

TRANSLATION Adds Fashion Label DEMOBAZA to Creative Team for NYC Run

BalletCollective announced that Bulgarian concept fashion label DEMOBAZA has joined the creative team for Translation, collaborating on costumes for the production's evening length premiere of. Translation, which opened Saturday, June 6 at The Culture Club, 530 West 27th Street, and runs through June 28.

Founded in Sofia in 2007 by designers Demo and Tono, DEMOBAZA is known for a minimalistic and futuristic aesthetic expressed through deconstructed silhouettes and high-tech materials. The label's visual language, shaped by themes of consciousness, movement, and transformation, aligns closely with the world of Translation, in which silhouetted dancers drift through shifting planes of projected light in a meditative environment of sound and movement.

DEMOBAZA joins a creative team that includes choreographer and director Troy Schumacher, composer Julianna Barwick (Pitchfork "Best New Music"), Chilean installation artist Sergio Mora-Diaz, and speculative fiction writer Ken Liu, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards. The costumes are styled by Scott Shapiro.

Translation returns to New York City for the first time since its 2017 premiere in an expanded fifty-five minute version with new choreography. The production marks the longest run in BalletCollective's history-25 performances over four weeks-with only 82 seats per performance. BalletCollective's five previous seasons sold out.

The cast includes Mizuho Kappa, Thomas Hogan, Ella Titus, Alexsander Swader, Arayah Lyte, and Georgia Greene.

EDFEST to Return at Brooklyn Art Haus with 15 Edinburgh Fringe Previews

After a successful 2025 festival, Duces Wild will present the second edition of EdFest, a festival of previews of shows bound for Edinburgh Fringe later this year. The 2026 festival will be held at Brooklyn Art Haus from 14-19 July, with two shows per weeknight, plus more on the weekend.

'The Fringe is magical, but it's also expensive and can be overwhelming,' says Jess Ducey, EdFest curator and producer. 'EdFest is an experiment in collective ways of sharing the risks of making art - and hopefully making some friends along the way.'

Fifteen shows were selected from a pool of 42 applicants, and each will present a one-night-only preview before they leave for the world's largest theatre festival, running from 7-31 August 2026 in Edinburgh. Much like the Fringe, shows run a broad gamut of themes, genres, and styles. "Whether you're in the mood to reckon with fame, process grief, lament capitalism, start a revolution, search for love and connection, clown around, dance, paint, immerse yourself in sound and light, or laugh yourself silly, we've got something to tickle your fancy,' Ducey says.

Audiences are invited to support indie artists and discover the next breakout Fringe hit at Brooklyn Art Haus this summer.

EdFest runs from 14-19 July 2026 at Brooklyn Art Haus, 24 Marcy Avenue at 7pm and 9pm, plus 2pm matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $20, available at https://www.eventbrite.com/cc/edfest-2026-4846419.

Judy Garland Is Fat at Carnegie Hall resurrects the biggest night in show business history as a messy, virtuosic, experimental lip-sync extravaganza. Sixty-five years after Judy's iconic performance, NYC drag artists Xena Fauxbia and Soda Pressed worship at the altar of a queer icon, examining Judy's experience to mine their own relationship to hunger and societal fatphobia. It's a wacky, aching exploration of weighty desire and the absurdity of never quite fitting into "The Costume."

by Aarushi Agni (15 July @ 7pm)

Sold out at the NYC Fringe Festival 2025. Part love letter, part stand-up set, part concert and part iPhone advert (jk!), the show explores whether emojis are a uniquely universal shorthand or merely digital crumbs of connection in a fractured society. In this hilarious, heartfelt, ADHD-friendly show packed with energetic musical numbers, sparkling visuals and audience participation, Aarushi Agni delivers a chaotic TED Talk/musical about emoji and risky texts blending sharp comedy, cultural insight and impressive vocal dynamism.

(15 July @ 9pm)

She's a professional matchmaker who accidentally set up her college boyfriend with her high school bully. Sorta like if Ron set up Hermione with Malfoy.
(16 July @ 7pm)

Before age ten, Marina di Marzo was an unstoppable romantic force. After eleven? A cautionary tale. This New York comedian digs into her early 2000s childhood - armed with MS Paint, Sharon Stone, and her Italian heritage - to figure out exactly when and why it all went wrong. Expect real stories of Austen-level passion from primary school, Dickensian heartbreak from middle school onward and a Disney channel inspired pop song you didn't see coming. Oh, and at some point she flashes her bra. It makes sense in context. Mostly.

Dr Kara Kibara: The Love Guru

Dr Kara Kibara sells her services through a hybrid TED talk, workshop, transformation-improv performance style as the best dating and relationship guru. Dr Kara unintentionally reflects on her past to find out why she is still single as she offers advice on manifesting love. Featuring her unreleased original songs recorded when she was under a Columbia Records mentorship years ago. Edinburgh Fringe Talk 2025's Hottest Preview in Town.

Japanese Grandma Funeral

by Kento Morita (17 July @ 7pm)

Kento the clown missed his grandmother's funeral in Japan due to Covid restrictions. He's trying to recreate the traditional rites, but it keeps going wrong. Can the audience help him achieve closure in this gentle, heartwarming comedy? Blending clown and storytelling with Japanese and Okinawan funeral customs, Kento attempts to process 108 of his grandma's memories, along with unresolved thoughts and small, stubborn facts about her life, in a show that is both deeply personal, yet widely relatable. What begins as a failed ceremony becomes a gentle, intimate invitation to laugh, remember and let go.

Ethan & Gigi Present: THE MOVEMENT

(17 July @ 9pm)

Believing themselves to be revolutionary leaders, two overconfident artists attempt to liberate the masses through the power of theatre. Ethan & Gigi are here to upstage fascist pigs and break legs (literally). The revolution will not be televised, it will be live!

by Elizabeth June (18 July @ 2pm)

Award-winning solo show by Elizabeth June (Blackish, Hightown), Notes from a Narcissistic Negro and Other N Words is a dramedy detailing her childhood and clergy sexual abuse and cancer survival. All songs, stories, spoken word and stand-up sets are a testimony of her triumph over trauma. Explicit language and situations.

Jerk Off!

by Nadia P Manzoor (18 July @ 7pm)

After her mother's death, a British-Pakistani woman moves to Boston - where a 6'5" Puerto Rican hip hop dancer from the Bronx teaches her how to dance, how to take up space, and how to battle. She doesn't realise she's being trained to fight him. A darkly funny solo show featuring electrifying hip hop and astonishing character transformations.

I WAS NEVER HERE

by Leo Lion (18 July @ 9:30pm)

This sleeper agent is on his most important mission ever. Your mission: make him remember what the hell it is. From the clown/game show creators of last year's Edinburgh Fringe hit HELP ME!!!! (an interactive mime séance) comes I WAS NEVER HERE: a highly interactive, gonzo spy thriller featuring an overzealous secret agent searching for activation phrases which will help him regain sections of his memory. Play along, decode cyphers, answer phones and most importantly remember - you never saw any of this.

Alex La: Fool As Hell

(19 July @ 2pm)

Alex La is bringing his debut stand-up comedy special, Fool as Hell, to the Edinburgh Fringe this year. He'll be doing bits about puzzles and dragons, but he'll also be getting personal about his parents' marriage and his dating life, from his most recent breakup to his current relationship with an older woman. It's got a bit of everything! 'Whimsical, fun, a bit different' (James Mattern, comedian). 'Can't wait to see more' (also James Mattern, comedian).

The Van Gogh Shogh

by Donna Oblongata (19 July @ 7pm)

It's a sip and paint. It's Sotheby's. It's karaoke night. Strap in, because whatever it is, Van Gogh is back and he has a side hustle. This is the real Van Gogh Immersive Experience. Emphasis on immersive. Donna Oblongata (Leeway Transformation Award, Jilline Ringle Solo Performance Award) is 'brimming with compassion and monstrously funny' (PlayOnMKE.com). She has sold out theatres in NYC and LA and performed internationally in Slava's Snowshow. 'A delightfully unhinged gem' ***** (ShinyLife.co.uk). 'An uproariously good time... side-splittingly funny' **** (AdventuresInTheatreland.com). 'Inspired lunacy' (TalkinBroadway.com).

atticwife

by RnL Productions (17 July @ 9:30pm)

Astrid Fisher is an influencer who goes from tradwife to trapped-wife when her husband locks her in their attic. She says she's soooo happy to be up there, but some of her viewers aren't so convinced. When one of those concerned viewers breaks into the attic to try and rescue her, she is forced to question if the life she's made as a "traditional woman" is as perfect as she's always claimed... or if she's in serious danger.

STUPID F***ING BIRD to Make NYC Debut from EG Productions at Chain Theatre

Stupid F***ing Bird is Aaron Posner's reimagining of Anton Chekhov's classic play The Seagull. Originally premiered at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in 2013, the adaptation blends comedy and heartbreak while breaking down the traditional fourth wall through an immersive staging experience.

The play follows Conrad, a tortured young playwright who is deeply in love with Nina, his muse and first sweetheart. Set at the country estate of his mother Emma, a celebrated actress, the story explores a web of complicated relationships that becomes even more volatile with the arrival of Trigorin, an acclaimed writer and Emma's lover. As romantic entanglements unravel, the characters grapple with desire, betrayal, ambition, and the complexities of family.

"I think there's tremendous power in admitting that despite centuries of introspection we humans still don't know what to do with the indolent beasts that live within us, but something, or someone, makes us want to know better," said cast member Eileen Han. "I'm very excited to join my ensemble in portraying this bittersweet love story, where we explore the part of love that is not pretty, the part of love that is out of our control."

The production is directed and produced by Dani Pianin, a trans actress and musician originally from Athens, Ohio. Stupid F***ing Bird marks her New York directorial debut.

EG Productions was formed by a group of actors who trained together at Esper Studios under the mentorship of Barbara Marchant. The company is dedicated to creating independent theater and developing collaborative artistic work in New York City.

The cast includes Dexter Assa as Conrad, Marcelina Sowa as Emma, Abigail Rheem as Nina, Eileen Han as Mash, Brian Paul Dzuban as Trigorin, Foster Nix as Dev, and Jason Ruffo as Sorn. Spencer Collins serves as stage manager.

Performances will take place at Chain Theatre, located at 312 West 36th Street, 4th Floor, in Manhattan.

Interview: Star Amerasu On Joining SILVERBACK MOUNTAIN Off-Broadway

Mickey Gooch Jr.'s SILVERBACK MOUNTAIN, billed as a new gay jungle play, is set to begin a three-week limited engagement at Off-Broadway's AMT Theater (354 West 45th Street). Directed by Sam LaFrage, with musical direction by Jaz Koft, choreography by Nico DeJesus, and music arrangements by Bryan Blaskie, the production previews from May 31 with an opening night on June 5 and a closing performance on June 21.

Joining the cast as Miss Jackson is Star Amerasu, a performance and new media artist whose work seamlessly integrates narrative film, music, and digital storytelling. A graduate of the San Francisco Film School, Amerasu wrote, directed, and starred in the narrative short film AFTER HOURS, executive produced by Elliot Page. Her theatrical roots in New York include originating the lead in Jeremy O. Harris's NORF, and she recently completed a run in Sam Anderson's THE WOLF IS AN ENDANGERED SPECIES at the New Theater Hollywood.

In SILVERBACK MOUNTAIN, Amerasu plays Miss Jackson, a trans woman, diner queen, and former special forces operative who leads a rescue mission to Uganda. The chaotic adventure blends screwball comedy, a love story, and a jailbreak into a musical romp, following Lucas and Andy, a couple whose gorilla trekking trip spirals into something far more dangerous when their relationship and identities are unexpectedly exposed.

The production stars Mickey Gooch Jr. as Lucas alongside Amerasu, Olamide Asanpaola, Leo Jasper Davis, Joe Regelbrugge, Samuel Selman, Walker Stovall, and Jason Yanto. The design team includes Josh Oberlander (scenic), Sarah Lockwood (costumes), Coby Chasman-Beck (lighting), Brandon Hilfer (sound), Zack Lobel (projection), and Sean Frank (props and set dressing).

BroadwayWorld spoke with Amerasu about returning to the New York stage after more than a decade, finding the dual register of camp and emotional depth in Miss Jackson, and why a queer survival story that chooses joy feels especially urgent right now.

What drew you to the role of Miss Jackson, and what was it about this character that made you want to return to the New York stage?

When I got the call about this show, I was immediately drawn to Miss Jackson's no nonsense, kooky spirit. Having been off the stage in NY for almost 12 years, this felt like the perfect character to come back to. She's empowered, she's funny and she knows how to get things done. She's a person who I aspire to be more like in my day to day.

Miss Jackson is described as someone who lives in a dual register, camp and comedy on the surface with genuine emotional depth underneath. How do you navigate that balance in your performance?

I think what we see is just a sliver of this character's lived experience, but what we do see is so important to the story. I try every night to really just have fun. Really listen to the other people I share the stage with and really respond. Which then bridges the camp to the emotional depth.

Miss Jackson is a trans woman, a diner queen, and a former special forces operative. How did you approach bringing together such a wonderfully unexpected combination of qualities in one character?

I feel like as a trans woman, I don't ascribe to the narrative that there's only one way to be a woman. I think we live in a world full of dualities. Miss Jackson holds multitudes, and all of us on earth have that ability as well. There's a line that Walker says as Marty, "Us f***gots can do anything." I think this is true. The whole of the LGBT community is imbued with the ability of transmutation, of being adaptable. Something I never want us to forget.

SILVERBACK MOUNTAIN is described as a queer survival story that chooses joy and community over tragedy. Why do you think that kind of storytelling is especially important right now?

I think with all the anti-trans laws popping up around America, it parallels these very real dangers that the entire LGBT community faces in countries like Uganda, where being gay is punishable by the death penalty. Being yourself shouldn't be illegal anywhere. This play shows us that through the power of LOVE we can defeat fear, and hate. We don't linger too long in sadness, it's real and the traumas are there. But because of the work that Sam LaFrage did to work on the story, we leave people feeling good, feeling hopeful.

You're working with director Sam LaFrage, who has a strong background in queer and camp theatrical storytelling. What has that collaboration been like in shaping Miss Jackson?

It's been a joy! Sam told me very early in the process about how he used to drive around the Lady Chablis, trans icon and performer who starred in MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL. I love her and her character and try to bring some of her essence into Miss Jackson. It was a lot of listening to Sam's ideas, talking about jokes, and some days we would go around the room yelling out different jokes for the various characters to say. That felt super collaborative and lovely. I think Sam hears comedy like music, the ups and downs and the flow. It's been like a comedy acting bootcamp! Thank god I'd already gone through basic trainings, cause this was the comedy Marines.

For someone who has worked across so many different platforms and art forms, what does live theater offer you as a performer that nothing else can?

Getting the likes and the clicks and the multi millions of views is nice, and can give you an elevated sense of self. But nothing compares to doing a scene in front of a live audience, and flopping so hard you wanna die. Then going to a rehearsal, getting your notes, changing the performance and then doing it for a new audience the next night and killing it! Like in a world so used to instant gratification, it's been such a joy to patiently wait to get the reaction you want as a performer. There's no takes in theater, you have 1, maybe 2 opportunities on a matinee day, to get it right! That's some powerful performance magic! I guess I just love when hard work pays off. Theatre is BACK mamas!

SILVERBACK MOUNTAIN plays a regular schedule of Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., with added performances on Sunday, May 31 at 7 p.m., Monday, June 1 at 7 p.m., and Monday, June 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $85 and available at www.SilverBackMountainPlay.com.

Half a century following Whitman's 1892 passing, a secret notebook was discovered containing an early 12-poem series titled "Live Oak, with Moss" which had been heavily revised and incorporated into his later opus “Leaves of Grass.” Performed by Jones, the original series of unrevised poems reveals Whitman's hidden love making legible his deepest desires. This poem cycle confirms Whitman as a queer icon of his time, and Whitman in Love honors this legacy of “America's poet.”

Whitman took nightly refuge at the bohemian Pfaff's beer cellar, on Broadway at Bleecker Street, where he met his love Fred Vaughan, who inspired some of Whitman's most romantic verse and who's letters, along with many others, are heard in this evocative performance.

BLUE SKIES YONDER To Be Showcased At The Rogue Theater Festival

Bucks County, Pennsylvania playwright Peter Fenton will present his dark comedy BLUE SKIES YONDER on July 11 at The Flea Theater as part of the 2026 Rogue Theater Festival. This reading follows the presentation of Fenton's play, CORONATION, at Chain Theatre earlier in July.

BLUE SKIES YONDER, written by Peter Fenton and directed by his Passage Theatre colleague Monah Yancy, is an Agatha Christie-inspired locked-room murder mystery in the shadow of late-stage capitalism. At his lavish book launch party, promising young author Harrison Fowler spirals under the weight of a mismanaged manuscript and the deadly ambitions of his colleagues and loved ones. In the cutthroat world of publishing, the real killer might be whoever tells the best story.

Fenton himself will portray Harrison Fowler opposite Samuel Cheng as Jason, with Avery Kellington as Marybeth and Jim Fenton as Preston. Joining them will be León Rose as Cole, Brittaney Delsarté Chatman as Rebecca, Minh-Chau Scott as Jillian, and Hayley Jo Pellis as Amber, with narration by Liam Sullivan. The majority of this cast returns from the October 2025 reading held at ArtWorks in Trenton, New Jersey. Peter Fenton and Avery Kellington previously collaborated on the Off-Broadway premiere of ABANDON ALL HOPE at Theatre Row in 2023.

"This is a whodunnit filled with greed, lust, sabotage, and all the addictions that come with wanting something immediately-at any cost-without caring who gets hurt along the way," shares director Monah Yancy. Playwright and cast member Peter Fenton adds, "I wanted to write a story inspired by the gap I've experienced between the success the outside world sees and the terrifying precarity of living through it. While I wrote this about a debut author, I think many people with public social media will be able to relate."

The reading will be presented on July 11 at 7:30pm at The Flea Theater. Due to language, themes, and content, this play is recommended for audiences age 14 and up. All tickets are $15 and available at the event page on Ticket Tailor.

About Peter Fenton

PRÓXIMO to Make New York Premiere at Repertorio Español

Repertorio Español will present the premiere and limited run of Próximo, one of the most applauded plays by the renowned Argentine playwright and director Claudio Tolcachir. The production will be presented in a brief run of only four performances, from Thursday, June 25th to Sunday, June 28th, 2026.

Starring Lautaro Perotti and Santi Marín, Próximo delves with deep poetry and rawness into relationships built on distance. The story follows Pablo, an Argentine living in Australia, and Elián, a Spanish actor living in Madrid. In an era where social media and video calls have replaced traditional letters, both build an intense love story through the screen. Little by little, each becomes the only thing the other has in the world, yet always far apart, never touching or knowing each other's skin.

"In a moment where everything seems so broken and depressed, talking about love is a form of resistance," states author and director Claudio Tolcachir.

The staging challenges the limits of theater itself: although the two actors physically share the stage just inches apart, they never look into each other's eyes, creating the masterful and heartbreaking illusion of a geographical abyss spanning thousands of miles. The set design by Sofía Vicini, lighting by Ricardo Sica, and costume design by Cinthia Guerra build a minimalist space that shatters the false sense of closeness when virtual communication cuts out and loneliness floods everything.

Performances will take place on Thursday, June 25, 2026 - 7:00 PM; Friday, June 26, 2026 - 7:00 PM; Saturday, June 27, 2026 - 7:00 PM; Sunday, June 28, 2026 - 3:00 PM.

Never was there a story of more woe, or more romance, than the Bard’s timeless tale of two young lovers from warring families.
Running August 14-September 27, 2026

Don Juan has abandoned Elvira, whom he seduced into breaking her vows and marrying him. Over the course of a single adventure-filled day, he and his loyal sidekick, Sganarelle, encounter many of the people Don Juan has betrayed. As he seduces women, defies social conventions, mocks religion, and revels in provocation, his appetite for transgression seems impossible to satisfy. Yet the signs are unmistakable: the walls are closing in. Will he truly repent? Or will he just pretend to, like so many around him, and continue down the same path to the bitter end?

T-BOY ON GRINDR to Make U.S. Premiere at The Tank in New York City

Following acclaimed performances across Europe and Asia, T-BOY ON GRINDR, the autofictional solo theater work written and performed by João d'Orey and directed by Malaya Stern Takeda, will make its New York City and U.S. premiere at The Tank on June 19 and June 21 at 9:30 p.m and 7:00pm.

Part coming-of-age story, part musical dreamscape, T-BOY ON GRINDR follows T-Boy, a teenage trans boy navigating the often-unspoken codes of the cisgender gay male community through the dating app Grindr. Moving fluidly between monologue, singing, dance, and autofictional storytelling, the work examines how queer and trans bodies are perceived, desired, and marginalized within both sociopolitical and medical frameworks.

Confronted with rejection and misunderstanding from a community he longs to belong to, T-Boy embarks on a turbulent and imaginative journey in search of intimacy, self-definition, and acceptance. Along the way, the show asks urgent questions: How can queer communities rewrite heteronormative assumptions about desire and body perception? What spaces can we create to celebrate difference rather than replicate exclusion?

For d'Orey, whose writing is marked by interruptions, unexpected turns, and shifts in perspective, the work imagines alternative realities where transness is not treated as an obstacle or revelation. Instead, T-BOY ON GRINDR creates moments of radical simplicity and tenderness-scenarios in which connection exists without qualification, and where trans bodies are neither fetishized nor questioned.

The production has toured internationally with performances in Berlin, Bangkok, Athens, Prague, and Bratislava, and is currently presented as part of the program at Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin.

CANARY: AN AMERICAN MYTH to Make Staged Reading Debut at Rogue Theater Festival

This July, Rogue Theater Festival audiences will travel deep into the coalfields of West Virginia with Canary: An American Myth, a staged reading of a new play by playwright Meghan Martin that blends history, folklore, music, and Greek mythology to tell the story of the miners who fought for their lives, their families, and their futures.

Set against the backdrop of the West Virginia Coal Wars of the early twentieth century, Canary follows Kitt, a miner who wants nothing more than to provide for his family and stay out of trouble. But when dangerous working conditions, private mine guards, and mounting tensions threaten his community, Kitt finds himself pulled into a struggle much larger than himself. Through the eyes of Caleb, Kitt's young son, the miners' fight becomes intertwined with the myth of Icarus. As Caleb learns stories of wings, flight, and impossible dreams, the play explores the risks ordinary people take when reaching for something better.

For Martin, who grew up in West Virginia, the story is deeply personal.

Rather than presenting the Coal Wars as a straightforward historical drama, Canary frames the story through the lens of Greek mythology, drawing parallels between the miners' fight for survival and the story of Icarus.

Music plays a central role in the production, weaving together traditional labor songs, Appalachian storytelling traditions, and live folk instrumentation. Mandolin, improvised foley and instrumentation through found objects, and shape-note-inspired harmonies help create a world where history and myth coexist.

The title itself comes from the canaries once carried into coal mines to warn workers of deadly gases. In the play, the canary becomes both a literal and symbolic figure-a warning, a witness, and a reminder of the cost of ignoring danger.

While Canary explores labor history, Martin hopes audiences will see connections to the present day.

Presented as part of Rogue Theater Festival, Canary: An American Myth will be performed on July 12 at 2:00 PM at The Flea Theater.

Canary: An American Myth is written by Meghan Martin and directed by Meghan Martin and Khiry Starghill, with music and movement by Halley Platz and Gabby Conan.

For audiences interested in American history, Appalachian culture, folk music, or stories about ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things, Canary offers a powerful reminder that some of the most important myths are the ones we lived.

The cast features Xander Black, Jeremy Byron, Alan CordoBa, Devin Funnye, Kevin Gonzalez, Saturday Lawson, Hila Naus, Michael Norton, Halley Platz, Casey Reardon, Mark Stephen Kopas, Bryan Patrick Stoyle, and Ann Marie Taglavore

Review: Brits Off-Broadway’s DAVID COPPERFIELD at 59E59 Theaters-A Gem

“I hope time will be good to us all,” by David in David Copperfield

Here’s one play you don’t want to miss! David Copperfield is now on stage at 59E59 Theaters as part of the Brit"s Off-Broadway 2026 festival of plays. The Guildford Shakespeare Company brings Charles Dickens’ riveting tale to New York City, fresh from its sold-out premiere run in London. The play is ingeniously adapted by Abigail Pickard Price with Sarah Gobran and Matt Pinches. It also enjoys the splendid direction of Abigail Pickard Price and a remarkably talented cast of three.

David Copperfield was published in a series from 1849 to 1850. It is a coming-of-age tale that tells of David’s life from birth through his maturity as a family man with a substantial writing career. It is a rich, detailed depiction of Victorian life with its hardships, adventures, hopes, and successes.

The tapestry of colorful characters is wonderfully portrayed, and clever puppetry rounds out the story. The troupe includes Eddy Payne who masters his role as David Copperfield. Luke Barton and Louise Beresford seamlessly assume all the other parts. Barton plays Peggatty, Ham, Mr. Creakle, Mr. Murdstone, Mr. Dick, Mr. Micawber, Mr. Spanlow, Mr. Wickfield and Mrs. Steerforth. Beresford plays Miss Betsey, Mother, Steerforth, Mrs. Micawber, Emily, Uriah Heep, Dora, Mr. Peggatty, and Agnes. The troupe’s acting prowess is nothing short of amazing. Scenes move quickly and the run time of two plus hours flies by. Our readers would like to know that this play won the Best Ensemble Performance Award at the London Fringe Theatre Awards 25/26.

The prop and costume changes are not only clever but very effective. We applaud the entire creative and production team for bringing David Copperfield to the Upper East Side stage. They include producers, Sarah Gobran and Matt Pinches; associate and movement director, Amy Lawrence; set and costume design, Neil Irish; co-Costume Designer, Annett Black; lighting designer, Mark Dymock; sound designer, Matt Eaton; fight director, Philip D’Orleans; production and company stage manager, Hannah Walker; production stage manager, Madeleine Blossom; vocal coach, Sterre Maier; and set builder, Tom Baum.

SQUIRT GUNS AND TONKA TRUCKS to Launch AFLAMDA Studio's New Reading Room Series

American Friends of LAMDA Studio (AFLAMDA Studio) is to launch its new Reading Room series with an industry reading of squirt guns and tonka trucks, a new play by Studio Member John Selby. The inaugural event brings together an ensemble of artists and recent graduates of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), one of the world's most respected conservatories for actor training. The reading will be held at the A.R.T./NY Studios on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Set on the verge of World War III, squirt guns and tonka trucks follows a young adult ministry at a Catholic church in Cleveland, Ohio as they gather for Friendsgiving amid mounting global uncertainty. The cast includes Moira McAuliffe, Seth Retzlaff, Haliya Roberts, John Selby, Sarah Thorn (Othello, This World of Tomorrow), Angelica Williams, with Jacob de Heer reading stage directions. All are graduates of LAMDA. Selby also directs.

The Reading Room series is designed to spotlight bold new theatrical voices while fostering artistic collaboration between LAMDA alumni and the broader New York creative community. AFLAMDA Studio builds on the link between the UK conservatory tradition and the American entertainment industry, supporting artists through performance opportunities, community engagement, and development initiatives.

LAMDA continues to receive international recognition for excellence in actor training. The school was recently named among The Hollywood Reporter's top drama schools in the world, ranking seventh globally in its latest annual list.

Founded in 1861, London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art is the oldest drama school in the United Kingdom and has trained generations of acclaimed actors, directors, and theatre-makers working across stage and screen including John Lithgow, Ruth Wilson, David Oyelowo, Gabby Beans, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Through the Reading Room series, AFLAMDA Studio aims to serve as an incubator of new work from Studio Members reflecting LAMDA's ethos of multidisciplinary creativity and ensemble-based storytelling.
Laura Clare Browne's ATTICWIFE To Have New York Preview Shows, Ahead Of EdFringe Run

Making its world premiere at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, atticwife is a new play satirizing the recent tradwife epidemic. It begins performances at theSpace @ Niddry St in Scotland on August 7th, with preview shows in New York in July, at 59E59 Theaters as part of East to Edinburgh, and Brooklyn Art Haus as part of EdFest.

atticwife follows Astrid Fisher, an influencer who goes from tradwife to trapped-wife when her husband locks her in their attic. To the millions of "wives and mommies" following her, she claims she's soooo happy to be up there... but some of her viewers think her new "attic life <3" is seriously alarming.

Already a seasoned performer and comedy writer, atticwife is Laura Clare Browne's playwriting debut. She was inspired (and unsettled) by the rise of tradwife content on social media, spurring her to tackle the concept the only way she knew how: with comedy. The result is a razor sharp satire about alt-right grifters, isolation, and internalized misogyny. atticwife is a "wickedly funny and surprisingly emotional" play about women who hate women-for everyone who loves them.

Written by and starring Laura Clare Browne (macbitches, NYTimes Critic's Pick) as Astrid Fisher, and featuring Jen Clark (VAPE: The Grease Parody Musical, Only Murders in the Building, Girls5Eva) as Leah Park. Directed by Rebecca Wilson (Resident Director, The Crush Plays Project) with producing and fundraising support from Crystal-Marie Alberson (Short Plays Where the Queers Win, WOW Café Theater). They are absolutely thrilled to be presenting their first show at the Fringe after a successful staged reading of atticwife in NYC at The Tank's Limefest in 2025.

Performances at 59E59 Theaters are July 22nd and 25th at 6:30PM, and July 26th at 7:30PM. Tickets are $18 ($15 for members), and can be purchased online, or at the box office.

The performance at Brooklyn Art Haus for EdFest is on July 19th at 9PM. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online.

Performances at theSpace @ Niddry St are at 16:05 August 7th-15th, and at 20:05 August 17th-25th. Tickets are £12, and can be purchased online.
SNAZZY to Make New York Debut at LATEA Theater with RiffRaff NYC

RiffRaff NYC has announced the cast and creative team for Snazzy, a new play written by Joe Staton and based on A Snazzy Tale, the memoir by his mother, Lauren Staton. The production will be presented as part of the New York Theatre Festival at LATEA Theater in Manhattan, with performances on July 21, 22, and 25, 2026.

Set between Somerset, England and the wider world, Snazzy tells the remarkable true story behind Snazaroo, the face-paint company founded in the 1980s by Lauren and Paul Staton. What began as a small family business in a holiday park near Minehead grew into an internationally recognised brand sold across the globe. Blending humour, heart, and entrepreneurial determination, the play explores creativity, ambition, family, and the sacrifices often hidden behind success.

Produced by RiffRaff NYC, a New York-based theatre company committed to championing immigrant artists and international voices, Snazzy brings together performers from England, New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, and the United States.

The production is directed by Chloe Champken, a graduate of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City. Champken has built a reputation for creating work that bridges British and American theatrical traditions. She is the co-founder of Crowded Space, alongside fellow Brit Michael Reid, an ensemble dedicated to reimagining English classics for contemporary audiences, and Devious Minds, a company she co-founded with Brooklyn-based artist Gabriel Drax to develop bold new collaborative works.

Whether preparing a new production for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at Underbelly or staging Shakespeare in a Manhattan black box, Champken's work is distinguished by its fusion of British and American storytelling traditions. Both Champken and playwright Joe Staton are company members of the Ensemble Shakespeare Company, one of New York's leading classical theatre ensembles.

Leading the company is Jenny Taher as Older Lauren. A New York-based actress, Taher has performed throughout New York City as well as regionally and internationally. She is also an occasional writer and, by her own admission, "a sucker for a good story."

Playing Lauren is Brenna Peerbolt, a New York City-based actor. Her regional theatre credits include The Stranger (Enid Bradshaw) at Bluff City Theater, Babes in Toyland (Mistress Mary) at Woodstock Playhouse, Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors (Lucy/Others) at Millbrook Playhouse, The Wedding Binder at Seven Angels Theatre, and both It's a Wonderful Life and Doubt: A Parable at Cumberland Theatre.

Ross Mason will portray Paul Staton. Originally from London and now based in New York and New Jersey, Mason has spent more than twenty-five years working across stage, television, film, voiceover, and audiobook performance. With training in musical theatre from Amersham & Wickham College and the School for Film and Television, his career has spanned both sides of the Atlantic.

The production's Chorus is played by an international ensemble of performers who embody the many characters, voices, and moments that shaped the Snazaroo story.

Truman Gaudoin, an English-American actor and graduate of Drama Studio London, is known for his work with classical text and Shakespeare. Recent credits include Becoming Hamlet with The Shakespeare Forum in New York, Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet with Gallery Players, As If at the Etcetera Theatre, and Anna Karenina.

Naomi Orange is a New York-based performer, producer, and co-founder of Fruit Fly Theatre. Born in London, raised in New Zealand, and spending her adolescence in Australia, Orange brings a uniquely international perspective to her work. Her credits include The Wolves, Carrie, Matilda, and Cahoot's Macbeth. Influenced by punk and rave culture, she has developed a bold personal style that informs both her performance and creative work. She is also the granddaughter of renowned New Zealand historian Dame Claudia Orange.

Ronan Eddy Spierenburg, originally from Taunton in Somerset-just a few miles from Minehead, where much of Snazzy is set-is now based in New York City. Working across film, television, and theatre, he brings a versatile and emotionally grounded presence to the stage. His recent credits include Grace, Fixation, World War C**T, Girl Movie, and Growing Pains.

Laura Laman, born near Amsterdam to a Dutch father and Lithuanian mother, brings an extensive international training background to the production. Most recently she appeared as Stephano in The Tempest in New York, directed by Isaac Butler, author of The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act. The production was attended by Ethan Hawke and Brian Cox, both of whom praised the work.

The international nature of the cast mirrors the global impact of the company at the heart of the story. While Snazaroo began in Somerset, it would eventually become one of the world's best-known face-paint brands, used by professional artists, schools, theatres, sporting events, and families around the globe.

Since its announcement, Snazzy has attracted significant media attention on both sides of the Atlantic. Coverage has included a major feature by the BBC, which explored the remarkable true story behind the production and the family that inspired it.

The project has also been highlighted by the St. George's Society of New York, one of the city's oldest charitable and social organizations. Founded in 1770-before the American Revolution, the United States Constitution, and even the United States itself-the Society has spent more than 250 years supporting New Yorkers of British and Commonwealth heritage. The organization's interest in Snazzy reflects the production's uniquely Anglo-American story and its celebration of entrepreneurial, immigrant, and cultural connections between Britain and New York.

Joe Staton, playwright and producer of Snazzy, said:

"This story has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. While many people know Snazaroo as a global brand, far fewer know the extraordinary story behind it. At its heart, Snazzy is about creativity, resilience, family, and taking a leap into the unknown. I'm incredibly fortunate to be working with Chloe and such a talented international cast to bring this story to life."

CORONATION to Receive Staged Reading at Chain Theatre in Spotlight New Works Fest

Bucks County, Pennsylvania playwright Peter Fenton will present his dark comedy play CORONATION as a staged reading at midtown Manhattan's Chain Theatre July 1 & 2 as part of the 2026 Spotlight New Works Fest. The Spotlight New Works Fest, co-sponsored by Gitelman & Good Publishers and CPA Theatricals, is a curated festival dedicated to showcasing new shows written for educational and community stages.

CORONATION, written and directed by Peter Fenton, is a story of power, privilege, and visibility disguised as a teen comedy. When cornered by the no-nonsense guidance counselor, a charming but overlooked high school senior tells the story of how he hatched a scheme to manipulate the vote for Homecoming Queen in favor of his big-hearted longshot friend to settle a years-long grudge. His plan went horribly right.

The cast will be led by Simon Huynh as Dan opposite Yuliana Sleme as Maria. The supporting cast includes Monah Yancy as Mrs. Lowry, Sophrena Swanson as Janelle, Blue Colacchio as Candice, and Derek Crosby as Bryan with stage manager Brooke Hall. Sleme previously starred in Fenton's Off-Broadway debut ABANDON ALL HOPE in 2023, while Yancy is a frequent collaborator of Fenton's at Passage Theatre Company in Trenton, New Jersey. Colacchio is reprising their role from the play's original workshop production at Newtown Arts Company.

"I started developing this play in 2024 right here [in Bucks County] and a few high schools nationwide have picked it up for workshops," shared writer/director Peter Fenton. "I love Mean Girls and I believe New York is ready for a here-and-now take on the dark teen comedy." Cast member Simon Huynh added, "The themes of this play go much deeper than your average teen comedy. It's about characters from underrepresented communities taking back power in an institution that has always undermined them."

The reading will be presented at 4:30pm on July 1 and at 7:30pm on July 2. All tickets are free, reservations can be made here.

BRIAR PATCH to Make Mainstage Debut at Midtown International Theatre Festival

Playwright William Carter announced that his new drama, BRIAR PATCH, will officially transition from a developmental stage reading to a full-scale, mainstage production at the historic comeback season of the Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) this July.

The announcement comes at a monumental moment for the New York independent theatre community. After a nearly decade-long hiatus, MITF is making a historic return to the stage. In a landmark collaboration, MITF Founder John Chatterton (founder of the original Off-Off Broadway Review) has partnered with indie theatre luminary and promotion executive Jay Michaels and Jessica Jennings to relaunch the festival across the entire three-theatre American Theatre of Actors (ATA) Complex. The festival coincides with the ATA's milestone 50th Anniversary Gala celebration, running as a sprawling hub of creative innovation from June 15 through July 26, 2026.

The journey of BRIAR PATCH is as dynamic as the story it tells. Written by William Carter, a Lecturer of English at Kennesaw State University, the play's genesis sparked from a simple question posed by a family friend: "What if the town of Eatonton, Georgia did a play on Joel Chandler Harris?"

What began as a localized concept quickly developed into a profound, multilayered exploration of human nature. Carter first mounted a reading of the play in March 2026 with student actors at Kennesaw State University. Recognizing the undeniable power of the material, Carter transitioned a majority of that original Georgia cast to New York's Next Step Theatre Festival. Now, the momentum has propelled BRIAR PATCH onto the MITF mainstage roster with a powerhouse blend of original and New York-based talent, including original cast member Nick Smith (reading for Buddy). Casting negotiations are currently underway to lock in acclaimed performers Yayela Antione (Jeanine), Anthony Newkirk (Malcolm Singleton), and Lance Avery Brown (Sherman Singleton) for the full July run.

Set against the backdrop of Eatonton, Georgia, BRIAR PATCH follows a local town pastor who seeks to desperately reconnect with his estranged son by putting on a community play about the town's most famous and polarizing citizen: Joel Chandler Harris, the author of the Br'er Rabbit stories.

What begins as a healing theatrical project quickly ignites an explosive town-wide conflict over race, identity, and the generational cost of confronting the past. Rather than taking a political stance, BRIAR PATCH boldly tackles the concept of "cancel culture" through a deeply human lens, examining how easily we miss out on the blessings and wisdom of historical writers when we judge them strictly through the eyes of today. It is a moving, cautionary tale about the power of judgment without context, the danger of assuming intentions, and how we ultimately wound each other when we only take a surface look.

Before hitting the MITF mainstage in late July, industry professionals, critics, and theatre lovers can catch an exclusive, intimate sneak peek of the script in development on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 5:00 PM at The Producers Club – Grand Theater (358 W 44th Street, NYC)

MIGRATION DIARY: NEW YORK CITY EDITION to Make World Premiere at La MaMa

This June, the legendary La Mama Experimental Theatre Club welcomes the world premiere of Migration Diary. New York City Edition, a new theatrical collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute and The National Theatre of Bucharest. Created by award-winning Romanian director Carmen Lidia Vidu, Migration Diary. New York City Edition is a raw, visually immersive, new multimedia theater experience, running June 25 - 28, 2026.

Presented by La MaMa in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, the production brings real lives to the stage inside one of the world's most influential homes of experimental theater. No invented characters. No fictional dialogue. Just the stories people carry across borders.

Built through an extensive documentary process of interviews, personal archives, video diaries, and autobiographical testimony, Migration Diary continues the groundbreaking artistic method Vidu created more than a decade ago for her internationally acclaimed Diary of Romania (Jurnal de România) series, presented across Europe at major festivals and theaters. Performed by Sam Xu, Lia Fietz, Ana-Maria Bandean, and Ellen Ko, the show follows women whose lives passed through Romania, China, Germany, Portugal, Singapore, London, Moscow, and finally New York - and asks the question this city has always asked, and never fully answered: what does it mean to stay?

Blending live performance with haunting multimedia created by visual artist Sabina Costinel and media designer Constantin Șimon, the production transforms documentary footage, family archives, childhood photographs, digital collage, and projected imagery into a living landscape of memory, displacement, reinvention, and belonging.

Urgent, intimate, and deeply contemporary, Migration Diary. New York City Edition speaks directly to New York's immigrant soul - and to everyone who has ever left one life behind to begin another.

Performers include Sam Xu, Lia Fietz, Ana-Maria Bandean and Ellen Ko.

The production team includes Carmen Lidia Vidu (Concept, Research, Script & Artistic Director), Sabina Costinel (Multimedia Production), Constantin Șimon (Media Design) and Lizhen Mei (Styling).

La MaMa's The Club is located at 74A East 4th Street in New York City. Performances are Thursday at 7:30pm, Friday at 7:30pm, Saturday at 6:30pm and Sunday at 3pm. Run time is approximately 75 minutes. Post-show reception on Thu 6/25 and post-show Q&A with the artistic team on Sat 6/27. Tickets are $30 (adults) and $25 (students and seniors). First ten tickets to every performance are $10 (limit 2 per person). Ticket prices inclusive of all fees. For more info and to purchase tickets visit https://lamama.org/migrationdiary-nyc.

Carmen Lidia Vidu is a Romanian theatre and documentary film director based in Bucharest, whose work spans theatre, film, installation, and visual arts. For over two decades, her practice has been driven by a single impulse: listening to real people and turning their stories into art. She is the only director in Romania to have received both the country's highest theatre directing award and its highest documentary film award - and only the third woman in Romanian theatre history to be honoured in this way.

Since 2017, she has served as multimedia director for the George Enescu International Festival, one of the world's premier classical music events, collaborating with conductors including Vladimir Jurowski, Tan Dun, Hannu Lintu, and Giancarlo Guerrero. Her work at the festival earned two nominations at the International Opera Awards.

In 2026, her video mapping work received the Silver Trophy at the Eventex Awards in the Art Event category. Her directing vision has also crossed into fashion: Vogue Italia featured her work in both 2025 and 2026.

Press coverage of her work has appeared in Deutsche Welle, Radiotelevisione Italiana, Le Point, Tribune de Genève, and The Theatre Times. Her projects have been presented in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, India, Australia, and the United States. https://www.carmenlidiavidu.com
