DEAR EVAN HANSEN to Close Season 18 at Farmers Alley Theatre

Farmers Alley Theatre closes out its 18th season with the exhilarating contemporary musical, Dear Evan Hansen. With an insightful original script by Steven Levenson and an electrifying pop-rock score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, this Tony Award winning show opens July 9th and is a story about finding your place in the world while navigating the universal search for connection. It is a new classic, with a message that has resonated with audiences around the world.

The story follows high school student Evan Hansen who has felt invisible his entire life. But when a tragedy shocks his community and thrusts him into the center of a rapidly evolving controversy, Evan is given the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to be somebody else. As his web of well-intentioned lies begins to unravel, though, Evan is forced to confront the fact that the price of belonging may be far steeper than he bargained for.

"One of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history." - The Washington Post

Dear Evan Hansen will be directed by Kathy Mulay (Come From Away, Misery) who has directed 32 mainstage shows for Farmers Alley as well as numerous concerts, galas, cabaret and spotlight shows. Mulay is an invaluable asset to Farmers Alley whether as director, Costume Designer or as Production Manager. Mulay also served as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for many years.

“I first met composers Justin Paul and Benj Pasek when they were sophomores at the University of Michigan,” recalls Mulay, “and after hearing just a few songs, I knew immediately they were extraordinary young writers. Dear Evan Hansen is unique since social media serves as a powerful character — both as a lifeline and as a weapon. This important work explores themes of grief, loneliness, connection, and the powerful desire to belong. Librettist Steven Levenson wrote, ‘We live in a world today where we find ourselves as close to one another as the click of a button, and as remote and distant as galaxies.'”

“Like its title character, Dear Evan Hansen is complicated, vulnerable, imperfect, and deeply human,” Mulay continues. “Dear Evan Hansen offers the audience a powerful reminder of theatre's unique ability to help us feel seen, understood, and less alone.”

Mulay will collaborate with a very talented Music Director, Scott Patrick Bell (Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, Circle Theatre) who is making his Farmers Alley debut. Scott is currently on staff at SCHOOL OF ROCK GRAND RAPIDS. He has performed before Presidents, Bush, Reagan and Ford, and has worked on projects that have included Martin Short, Kevin Nealon, Jay Leno, and Tony Randall. Scott has been a musical director and band leader for over 30 years. Scott will also play keyboards for each performance and conduct a phenomenal band of local musicians.

As for the dynamite cast, audiences will see returning local favorites like Denene Mulay (Come From Away) as Cynthia, Carly Rose Mulay (Fun Home) as Zoe and Braeden Davis (Ride the Cyclone) as Connor, who were all a part of Farmers Alley's most recent smash hit Into the Woods. Additionally, Jacob Tyler Reinstein (Good Night, Oscar) will play the role of Jared and Kevyn Roessler (Beautiful) will serve as Swing/Understudy. The outstanding cast also consists of stellar professionals making their Farmers Alley debuts including Keegan Sells (Huntington Theatre Company) as Evan, Danny Gurwin (Broadway: Little Women, The Full Monty) as Larry, Lauren Singerman (NYC: Penguin Rep, TV: “All My Children”) as Heidi and Jacqueline Boynton (University of Michigan) as Alana.

“Dear Evan Hansen is a riveting show from start to finish,” says Managing Artistic Director, Jeremy Koch. “The script is captivating and the music is exhilarating. I saw this show in NYC at an off-Broadway theatre and I loved it. I got really swept up in the story. There is a masterful blending of humor and pathos, punctuated by a resonant and memorable score. I think our audiences will relate to Evan who feels disconnected from others due to his anxiety and the way that technology and social media can be overwhelming and all-consuming. I think it's fitting that we will tell this story in a dark theatre where we ask everyone to turn off their phones and screens and just listen and feel and learn. Dear Evan Hansen is in such good hands with Kathy Mulay, Scott Bell, Stage Manager Roger W. Burleigh and our extremely creative designers and proficient crew members.”

Dear Evan Hansen will run for three weeks from July 9th through July 26th, 2026 and some performances are already selling out. Performance days and times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30pm as well as Sundays at 2pm. For all performance times, go to farmersalleytheatre.com.

Tickets range from $52-$56, with student ticket pricing at $20 for all shows. Farmers Alley Theatre is proud to offer 15% off regular ticket prices for Military/Veterans and Teachers (please call the box office to request that discount and have ID ready to show upon arrival). $20 rush tickets for adults and $10 rush tickets for students are offered for all performances starting 1 hour prior to curtain (subject to availability; theatergoers must be present at the box office).

American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performance on Sunday July 19 at 2pm. Farmers Alley's ASL performances are generously sponsored by Barbara A. Rider & Fred W. Sammons as well as John & Lisa Schuemann.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN follows a socially anxious teenager whose private letter becomes the center of an unexpected web of connection, grief, and belonging. The musical has earned widespread recognition since its Broadway debut, winning multiple Tony Awards and developing a devoted following for its emotionally resonant score and its exploration of isolation and the human need to be understood.

Farmers Alley Theatre, a Kalamazoo institution now entering its 19th season, brings the production to downtown Kalamazoo this summer. The theatre has noted that some performances are already filling quickly, with tickets available through the company's website or by phone. DEAR EVAN HANSEN represents one of the most prominent titles in what the company recently announced as its 2026/2027 mainstage season, a lineup that also includes COME FROM AWAY and KIMBERLY AKIMBO.

The musical has been drawing significant regional attention this summer, with productions running or recently closed at companies across the country. BroadwayWorld recently published a review of Theatre Raleigh's production, which praised the cast and staging for finding genuine emotional depth in the show's themes of loneliness and the desire to belong.

It’s almost unbelievable for me to admit that this was my first time seeing The Phantom of the Opera. Of course, I knew the iconic songs and had seen countless clips over the years, but experiencing the production live on stage for the first time was entirely different, haunting, and spine-chilling in the best way possible. From the chandelier drop to the monumental set pieces, the show truly lives up to its legendary reputation. The 2026 tour, directed by Harold Prince, serves as a revitalized version of the original production, featuring Maria Björnson’s iconic designs, musical staging, and choreography by Gillian Lynne. It is absolutely ravishing, and Seattle audiences are lining up hours early to witness the spectacle for themselves.

Certain facets of the human condition are foundational to our very existence – change, connection, desire. One such particularly toxic universal truth is a constant need to be something more than we currently are. To search for happiness in external achievement rather than within ourselves, in our simple joys. Pippin at Signature Theatre breathes within that precise virulence, relatively orchestrated by a troupe of impeccably costumed and choreographed players. A feast for the eyes in all senses, Matthew Gardiner’s production surpasses even the highest of expectations.

Photos: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF At The Encore Theatre

The Encore Musical Theatre Company closes its 2025/26 Main Stage season with one of the most enduring and beloved musicals ever written, Fiddler on the Roof, running June 4 through July 19 in The Maas Theatre in Dexter. Check out photos of the production.

Sponsored by Marci & Stephen Feinberg, with onstage orchestra sponsorship by JoAnn R. Socha, this new production is directed by Dan Cooney and features a cast led by Broadway veteran and renowned Cantor, Daniel Eli Friedman, as Tevye.

Set in the small village of Anatevka, Fiddler on the Roof follows Tevye, a Jewish milkman, as he struggles to balance faith, family, and tradition while his daughters challenge long-held customs in a rapidly changing world. Featuring iconic songs including “Tradition,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Matchmaker,” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” the musical remains as timely and moving today as when it first premiered in 1964.

The cast also features Elizabeth Jaffe as Golde, Rebekah Geller as The Fiddler, and Lila Rose Harris, Lily Rosenberg, and Lily Wright as Tevye’s daughters Tzeitel, Hodel, and Chava. Eve Dahlia plays Shprintze, while the role of Bielke is shared by Olive Donow and Frankie McElroy.

Additional cast members include Fred Buchalter as the Rabbi, Jason Briggs as Lazar Wolf, Erit Gill as Yente, Hayden Steiner as Motel, Kiran Behr as Perchik, Caleb Smith as Fyedka, and Keith Kalinowski as the Constable, alongside Emmanuel Morgan, David Roden, Katherine Clemons, Beth Harris, Neri Frank, Trey Perlut, Joe Solomon, Dan Zimberg, and Jessie Alagna.

The creative team includes choreography by Jenny Florkowski, music direction by R. MacKenzie Lewis, scenic design by Sarah Tanner, costume design by Abby Sage Hall, lighting design by Rachel Lauren, props design by Anne Donevan, and sound co-design by Chris Goosman and Jasper Watson. The stage management team is led by Sarah M. Delia, with production supervision by Emma Hutchinson.

Tickets for Fiddler on the Roof are available now at The Encore Musical Theatre Company TheEncoreTheatre.org or by calling the box office (734.268.6200) Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

ALMOST HEAVEN: JOHN DENVER'S AMERICA At The Great Lakes Center For The Arts

Great Lakes Center for the Arts will present Almost Heaven: John Denver's America as part of its 2026 Summer & Fall Season. The production runs June 30 at 7:00 PM, July 1 at 7:00 PM, and July 2 at 2:00 PM, and celebrates the music and legacy of one of America's most beloved singer-songwriters. Tickets are on sale now.

For an entire generation, John Denver's voice served as a defining musical presence-an unmistakable blend of folk warmth, pop clarity, and country storytelling. His songs offered comfort, optimism, and a sense of shared experience that continues to resonate decades later. Almost Heaven revisits that legacy with reverence and simplicity, inviting audiences to reconnect with the melodies that helped define a cultural era, from "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Rocky Mountain High" to "Annie's Song" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders."

Timed with the nation's upcoming 250th birthday, the production reflects on a uniquely American musical voice and the enduring power of songs that connect generations. The cast, musicians, and creative team bring together accomplished artists with connections to Northern Michigan and stages across the country, highlighting the exceptional caliber of talent found right here in the region.

A Tribute to 100 Years of Magic, and Music of the Night.

James has performed nationally and internationally, including appearances at The Grand Hotel (Mackinac Island), The Jazz Kitchen (Indianapolis), and the Mount Hood Jazz Festival (Oregon).

Musical staging is created by award-winning choreographer Daniel Cruz, whose career includes collaborations with Michael Jackson, *NSYNC, Prince, and Ashanti, as well as national tours of Fame: The Musical and In The Heights.
BroadwayWorld Launches Producer Fantasy Game

Ever watched the weekly Broadway grosses roll in and thought you could pick the winners? Now you can put it to the test. BroadwayWorld has launched the Producer Fantasy Game, a free, season-long competition that lets theatre fans build a roster of Broadway shows and earn points based on how those productions actually perform at the box office. The draft window is open now.

How It Works

The setup is simple. During the draft window, you pick any six Broadway productions that opened this season. Drafting is non-exclusive, so there is no need to race a rival for a hot title. Any number of players can roster the same show.

From there, your shows go to work for you. Every week, each production on your roster earns fantasy points based on its reported box office grosses and capacity percentages. When Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle nominations and wins are announced, your shows bank bonus points on top of that. And each week you can answer our Fantasy Forecast prediction questions for up to five bonus points per correct call.

Weekly Scoring

Each week, a show earns one base point for every $50,000 it grosses, so a $1 million week is worth 20 base points. On top of that, shows can earn bonuses: up to five points for filling seats (based on how close to full capacity the house ran), six points for grossing $2 million or more (or three points for grossing between $1 million and $2 million), and eight points if its gross jumped at least 15 percent from the week before. A show loses four points if its gross dropped at least 15 percent. If a show goes dark and reports no gross for a week, it scores zero for that week with no penalty.

The Fantasy Forecast

The Producer Fantasy Game is really two games in one. The first is the box office game: drafting shows and earning points from their weekly grosses and awards. The second is the Fantasy Forecast, a weekly set of prediction questions about what's happening on Broadway, where each correct answer is worth up to five points. You can play one or both.

We track them separately so you can shine at either. Your Producer score covers the box office game, your Forecast score covers your prediction results, and your Combined score adds the two together for the overall championship ranking. The leaderboard lets you toggle between Overall, Producers, and Forecasters, so a sharp predictor can top the Forecasters board even during a rough season for their roster, and a roster powerhouse can lead the Producers board without answering a single question.

Managing Your Roster

Your lineup stays at six shows all season, and you have plenty of room to maneuver. You get one free drop every week, three additional season drops to use anytime before the trade deadline, and free replacements whenever a show on your roster closes. New productions open throughout the season and become available the moment they start reporting grosses, so it pays to keep a transaction in your pocket for that buzzy new opening.

Join the Game

The Producer Fantasy Game is free for all BroadwayWorld users, and you can join any time the draft window is open. Draft within the first two weeks of the season and your roster is scored from opening week, so the earlier you get in, the more weeks you bank. Build your roster, make your predictions, and start climbing the leaderboard today.

Milica Govich Retires After 22 Years at Oakland University Theatre Program

After 22 years of inspiring students in Oakland University's School of Music, Theatre and Dance, special lecturer and accomplished actress Milica Govich is retiring from teaching, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the university's theatre program and in the lives of countless students she mentored.

Govich joined Oakland University in 2004 and helped transform the university's Acting for the Camera curriculum into one of the theatre program's most sought-after areas of study. Throughout her tenure, she balanced her role as an educator with an active professional acting career that spanned film, television, Broadway and regional theatre.

"She has been instrumental in the growth of our 'Acting for the Camera' program and has been a tireless advocate for our students, actively promoting their early career entrance into the film and television industry," said Jeremy Barnett, chair of Oakland University's Department of Theatre.

Govich discovered her love for performing as a child, appearing in church and school plays before earning her Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University's Professional Actor Training Program and moving to New York City to pursue acting professionally.

Over the course of her career, she built an extensive résumé spanning stage, television and film. She toured nationally and appeared on Broadway in "Hello, Dolly!" starring Carol Channing and performed at leading regional theatres throughout Michigan, including Purple Rose Theatre Company, Meadow Brook Theatre, Performance Network Theatre and Jewish Ensemble Theatre.

Among her favorite stage roles were Virginia in "The Clean House" and Sonia in "Sonia Flew" at Performance Network Theatre in Ann Arbor, as well as roles in "Broadway Bound" and "Falsettos" at Jewish Ensemble Theatre. Her screen credits include the recurring role of Judge Leanne Dreben in "Law & Order," "Chicago Fire," "FBI: Most Wanted" and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," along with playing Gus's mom in the blockbuster film "The Fault in Our Stars."

Govich's connection to "The Fault in Our Stars" later came full circle at Oakland University when she was honored to moderate "A Conversation with John Green" in 2025 as part of the Varner Vitality Lecture Series. Held in the Oakland Center Founders Ballroom, the event brought students and community members together for a conversation with the bestselling author of the novel that inspired the film. Presented by the Student Life Lecture Board, Academic Affairs/Office of the Provost, The Donna and Walt Young Honors College and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, the event highlighted Govich's unique ability to bridge her professional acting career with meaningful student engagement opportunities on campus.

She said maintaining an active professional career allowed her to bring real-world experience and current industry knowledge into the classroom.

"I think students appreciated learning from someone who was actively working in the industry," she said. "It helped bridge the gap between classroom training and the realities of professional acting."

Her Broadway tour with "Hello, Dolly!" ultimately changed the course of her life.

"While playing Detroit, I was introduced to my future husband at a Serbian bowling tournament in Windsor," Govich recalled. "The rest is history."

After settling in Michigan, Govich became deeply involved in the regional theatre scene, performing at the Purple Rose Theatre Company and Meadow Brook Theatre. During an audition taking place on Oakland's campus, she stopped in to visit longtime theatre faculty member Karen Sheridan and left behind her résumé and headshot. Sheridan directed Govich in "And Then They Came for Me" at Meadow Brook Theatre.

"I marvel today that she was actually in her office," Govich said with a laugh.

A few months later, Govich was hired to teach Musical Theatre Workshop. Over the years, she also taught Intro to Theatre, Stage Voice, Actor Coaching, Acting for Non-Majors and Acting for the Camera, eventually developing the advanced Acting for the Camera curriculum in response to growing student demand.

"When I started at Oakland, on-camera acting was offered once every two years," Govich said. "Because of the demand, the program grew to a Cam 1 and 2 each semester, and sometimes even a Cam 3 and 4."

She said some of her proudest moments came from seeing former students succeed professionally in film, television and theatre.

"It's been wonderful seeing it expand and grow, and to see the students move on to work in the industry," Govich said. "I still maintain close relationships with many of them who still call for advice and coaching."

She also took pride in inspiring students to pursue theatre studies after taking her introductory courses.

"Several of my THA 1000 students became acting majors after taking my intro class," she said.

Reflecting on today's entertainment industry, Govich encourages aspiring actors to remain proactive and grounded.

"Create your own projects and work," she advised. "Take every opportunity that comes your way as you never know who you'll meet on the way. Have a life outside of your work. Having a family and supportive friends is key to having a happy life, and important to have that support as you pursue this very difficult career path."

Although she is retiring from teaching, Govich says she has no plans to step away from the arts.

"I'm not really retiring, just moving on to do other things," she said. Those plans include continuing to work on stage and screen, as well as finishing a screenplay she hopes to adapt into a play. "And whatever else the universe has in mind for me."

Review: A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER at Avon Players

A production of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is only as strong as its many moving parts, and this cast delivered them with delicious precision. The women of the show were far more than romantic interests orbiting Monty’s schemes—they were a dazzling constellation all their own. Hosanna Phillips as Sibella Hallward sparkled with mischievous charm and a twinkle of ambition, turning every entrance into a comic event, while Celeste Blanch (Phoebe D’Ysquith) floated through the chaos with warmth, sincerity, and a voice sweet enough to make even the most cynical audience member root for true love. Together, they provided the heart, wit, and emotional grounding that kept the production balanced amid its gleeful mayhem.

And then there was Tom Pagnano, who was tasked with portraying the entire D’Ysquith family—a theatrical marathon run at a full sprint. With astonishing versatility, Tom Pagnano transformed from aristocrat to reverend, society matron to outdoorsman, often in the blink of an eye. Each D’Ysquith felt fully realized, not merely differentiated by costume or accent but infused with distinct physicality, comic timing, and personality. Watching his rapid-fire parade of increasingly unfortunate relatives became a masterclass in character acting and one of the evening’s greatest delights. His performance was the engine driving the show’s wonderfully absurd humor, earning laughs before he even spoke a word. In a musical built on murder, inheritance, and mistaken priorities, the D’Ysquiths met their fates with such flair that audiences could hardly wait to see who would disappear next.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder will be performing at the Avon Players now through June 6th. Get your tickets here.

Classical Repertory Theatre Will Return to The Hilberry This Summer

For generations, the Hilberry Theater at Wayne State University was renowned for its vibrant repertory of classical plays, creating unforgettable experiences for audiences year after year.

This summer, that legacy begins a new chapter as the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, the Official Shakespeare Festival of the State of Michigan, makes the Hilberry Gateway its permanent home.

Beginning in July, audiences can enjoy a fully professional rotating repertory featuring Shakespeare's Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing, and a World Premiere adaption of George Farquhar's The Beaux' Stratagem.

Led by two of Michigan's most acclaimed directors, Janice L Blixt and Robert Kauzlaric, and brought to life in richly detailed period productions, these timeless works promise an extraordinary summer of storytelling, laughter, and theatrical magic.

Farmers Alley Theatre has announced its 2026/2027 season lineup: My Mother and the Michigan/Ohio War, Come from Away, Accomplice, Lost in Yonkers, Kimberly Akimbo, and a TBD title to be announced soon.

Managing Artistic Director Jeremy Koch says, “The leadership team at Farmers Alley Theatre are grateful to our team and to our audiences for an extremely successful 18th season. We were blessed with frequent full houses and extended weekends. We have tripled our audience base over the last two seasons and we are so proud to be celebrating our 19th season with shows that are bound to spark joy and stir the soul. Our 2026/2027 Season promises thrilling experiences from the moment the lights go down to the final standing ovation."

My Mother and the Michigan / Ohio War

Season 19 begins with My Mother and the Michigan / Ohio War by Paul Stroili. From the creator of A Jukebox for the Algonquin comes a hilarious new comedy about family, football, and the "Toledo Strip." When a bizarre accident leaves Izzy a widow, she enlists her Wolverine daughter and Buckeye son to fulfill her late husband's dream: a full-scale reenactment of the Michigan-Ohio War. “Historical” becomes “hysterical” in this award-winning battle of wits. The Sun Times News says that the play “…combines side-splitting humor with poignant moments and an ending you'll never forget." My Mother and the Michigan / Ohio War opens September 17, 2026.

Come From Away

Farmers Alley Theatre then brings back a fan favorite for an early holiday gift: the musical from Season 18, Come From Away! On September 11, 2001, 38 planes were diverted to the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland, doubling its population overnight. This Tony-winning musical tells the remarkable true story of the townspeople who opened their hearts and homes to thousands of stranded travelers, proving that even in the darkest times, we are all part of one global family. Kathy Mulay again serves as director, and there will be other familiar faces as well from last season's production. “Come From Away is the fastest selling show in our history,” says Koch. “It puts a spotlight on kindness, empathy, generosity and the enduring human spirit. We are bringing it back so quickly not only because 2026 marks 25 years since these events occurred, but more so because Come From Away is the kind of tale that people want to hear again and again. It reminds us about the best of humanity. It restores our faith in the world.” Come From Away opens November 5, 2026.

Accomplice

Looking ahead to 2027, Farmers Alley will sprinkle some mystery in your life as it presents Accomplice by Rupert Holmes. What begins as a classic murder plot at a remote British cabin quickly spirals into a meta-theatrical roller coaster of twists that blur the lines between fiction and reality. This Award-winning comedy-thriller will keep you screaming with laughter—just be sure to keep its secrets hush-hush! Accomplice opens January 28, 2027.

Lost In Yonkers

Next up on the docket is Neil Simon's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, Lost In Yonkers. Two young brothers are suddenly left on the doorstep of their stern Grandma Kurnitz in 1942 New York. As they navigate a strange new world, the boys encounter their eccentric Aunt Bella, her secret romance, and a small-time hoodlum uncle. It is a funny and poignant "memory play" about the resilience of family. Lost in Yonkers opens March 18, 2027.

Kimberly Akimbo

Finishing out the spring and leading the way into next summer is the unique and remarkable musical Kimberly Akimbo by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire. Kimberly is a bright New Jersey teen navigating family dysfunction, a first crush, and a rare genetic condition that causes her to age at four times the normal rate. Forced to deal with everything from her own mortality to possible felony charges, she remains a hilarious optimist determined to find happiness and embark on a great adventure. Kimberly Akimbo opens May 20, 2027.

While Farmers Alley Theatre is keeping the final title of its upcoming Summer 2027 lineup under wraps for just a bit longer, anticipation is already building for what promises to be an absolute blockbuster. The final musical of the 2026/2027 season will open on July 15, 2027.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF to Close The Encore Musical Theatre Company's Season

The Encore Musical Theatre Company will close its 2025/26 Main Stage season with one of the most enduring and beloved musicals ever written, Fiddler on the Roof, running June 4 through July 19 in The Maas Theatre in Dexter. This new production is directed by Dan Cooney and features a cast led by Broadway veteran and renowned Cantor, Daniel Eli Friedman, as Tevye.

Set in the small village of Anatevka, Fiddler on the Roof follows Tevye, a Jewish milkman, as he struggles to balance faith, family, and tradition while his daughters challenge long-held customs in a rapidly changing world. Featuring iconic songs including "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker," and "Sunrise, Sunset," the musical remains as timely and moving today as when it first premiered in 1964.

"There's a reason Fiddler on the Roof has never left us," said Cooney. "It doesn't ask whether you belong - it asks how you hold on when the world insists you let go. That question feels just as urgent now as it did in 1964, and it's why we knew this had to be on our stage."

This production was inspired by contemporary stagings that revealed new layers within the classic musical. Scenic designer Sarah Tanner created an abstract ribbed roof structure that hangs over the stage throughout the production, symbolizing both shelter and pressure for the people of Anatevka.

At the center of the production is Friedman, whose personal and professional connection to the material brings added depth to the role of Tevye. A graduate of UCLA's School of Theatre, Film and Television, Friedman spent 15 years performing professionally in New York before entering the Cantorate. His theatrical credits include LES MISERABLES, Cats, and Forever Plaid. He currently serves as Cantor at Temple Ramat Zion in Northridge, California.

The cast also features Elizabeth Jaffe as Golde, Rebekah Geller as The Fiddler, and Lila Rose Harris, Lily Rosenberg, and Lily Wright as Tevye's daughters Tzeitel, Hodel, and Chava. Eve Dahlia plays Shprintze, while the role of Bielke is shared by Olive Donow and Frankie McElroy.

Additional cast members include Fred Buchalter as the Rabbi, Jason Briggs as Lazar Wolf, Erit Gill as Yente, Hayden Steiner as Motel, Kiran Behr as Perchik, Caleb Smith as Fyedka, and Keith Kalinowski as the Constable, alongside Emmanuel Morgan, David Roden, Katherine Clemons, Beth Harris, Neri Frank, Trey Perlut, Joe Solomon, and Jessie Alagna.

THE LAST WIDE OPEN to Make Michigan Premiere at Theatre NOVA in Ann Arbor

Theatre NOVA, Ann Arbor's resident nonprofit professional theatre specializing in new plays, will present the Michigan premiere of The Last Wide Open by Audrey Cefaly, a tender, time-bending romance unfolding across parallel possibilities. The production runs May 22 - June 14, 2026.

Across three brief acts, the lives of weary waitress Lina and immigrant dishwasher Mikołaj intersect in three different versions of the same connection-each shaped by choice, chance, and circumstance. Blending humor, heart, and a touch of theatrical magic, The Last Wide Open explores how even the smallest moments can alter the course of a life.

Performed with live music by the actors themselves, the production weaves song into the storytelling, creating an immediate and intimate theatrical experience.

The production stars real-life partners Josie Eli Herman as Lina and Michael Alan Herman as Mikołaj, bringing an added layer of authenticity and connection to this deeply felt story. Natalie Rose Sevick appears as Stagehand, supporting the show's live music.

Directed by Diane Hill, one of Theatre NOVA's Producing Artistic Directors, the production team includes Briana O'Neal (stage manager/props), Craig A. Hane (set designer/builder), Jade Guerriero (lighting designer), Toni Davison (Costume Designer), Brit Connors (sound designer), Mark Batell (props), Kat Walsh (intimacy director), and Avalon McNew (assistant to the lighting designer).

Blending humor, heart, and music, The Last Wide Open offers a fresh take on the love story-one that celebrates not just finding the right person, but finding the right moment.

Midland Center For The Arts Honors Tina S. Van Dam With Inaugural President’s Award

Midland Center for the Arts honored longtime community leader and arts advocate Tina S. Van Dam as the inaugural recipient of the President’s Award during the Center’s 2026 President’s Lunch, sponsored by Greenleaf Trust.

Held at Midland Center for the Arts, the annual luncheon welcomed more than 130 supporters, partners, and community leaders for an afternoon focused on the future of the Center, including progress on its transformational renovation, the reimagined Museum, and the vision guiding the organization’s next chapter.

The newly established President’s Award recognizes an individual whose extraordinary service, generosity, and belief in Midland Center for the Arts have made a lasting impact on the organization and the broader community. As the first recipient, Van Dam was recognized for her leadership, philanthropy, and unwavering support for the Center and the Midland community.

“Tina S. Van Dam has made a lasting difference in this community through the way she leads, serves, and shows up for others,” said Matt Travis, President & CEO of Midland Center for the Arts. “Her support for Midland Center and for the institutions that help a community thrive reflects a deep belief in connection, generosity, and shared responsibility. It was a privilege to honor her as the inaugural recipient of the President’s Award.”

After years of leadership on the boards of Center groups, she served on the Center Board from 2006 to 2013 and played a significant role in helping strengthen the organization’s future through the creation of two endowment funds supporting the Midland Symphony Orchestra. She also led the creation of Voices: Extraordinary Women of Midland County, a exhibition honoring the stories, leadership, and impact of women who helped shape the community.

Her civic leadership extends well beyond the Center. Van Dam served for 15 years as leader of the Midland 100 Club, helping to grow the organization’s impact to more than $2.1 million contributed to the community through the generosity of its 600 members. Her work with numerous organizations earned her recognition as Midland Philanthropist of the Year in 2022.

Professionally, Van Dam built a distinguished career at The Dow Chemical Company, where she served as an attorney and Corporate Secretary and was recognized as a national leader in corporate governance. Since making Midland her home in 1977, she has strengthened institutions, lifted voices, and inspired others through a life defined by service.

In her responsive comments, Van Dam expressed appreciation and said that in addition to economic benefits to the community of so many people coming to the Midland Center for the Arts, "This is a place where creativity thrives, where artistic and scientific expression is expected. We come here to laugh, to connect, to learn, to be with like-minded friends as well as friends with different opinions, to appreciate music and art, to understand history and its importance, to bring our kids and out-of-town visitors, to enjoy so much talent and creativity – local and global. Center is truly an apt name for this vital community asset."

The President’s Lunch serves as an annual opportunity for Midland Center for the Arts to gather donors, partners, and community stakeholders to celebrate progress, share organizational priorities, and look ahead to the Center’s future. This year’s event included remarks from Travis, a panel discussion featuring members of the museum design team, and opportunities for guests to view exhibit prototypes and tour areas of the renovation in progress.

Sponsored by Greenleaf Trust, the 2026 President’s Lunch highlighted the momentum surrounding Midland Center’s ongoing transformation and the people whose support continues to move that work forward.

“We are deeply grateful for Tina and for the example she continues to set,” Travis said. “Her leadership reminds us that strong communities are built by people who invest in others, believe in what is possible, and choose again and again to serve with purpose.”
