Full Cast Set for IN THE CONTINUUM at Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre

The cast and production team has been revealed for for the Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre's upcoming production of IN THE CONTINUUM. Rhoze will direct and design the set for the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play, which tells the parallel stories of two Black women - one in Los Angeles and one in Zimbabwe - who discover they are pregnant and HIV positive. Playing the two women are FJT veteran Tuesdai B. Perry and newcomer Jewell Redman. The production team, in addition to Rhoze as Director and Set Designer, includes Brenden Marble (Lighting Designer), Kate Parker-Barrows (Costume Designer), Forrest Gregor (Sound Designer), Sholo Beverly (Muralist), Shane Rogers (Technical Director), and Tara Malpass (Stage Manager). Shadana Patterson is Graphic Designer, and Bria Walker-Rhoze is Artistic Associate.

IN THE CONTINUUM was written by the playwright and actress Danai Gurira (author of Broadway's ECLIPSED and cast member of HBO's THE WALKING DEAD) and the OBIE Award-winning actress and writer Nikkole Salter. It premiered at New York's Primary Stages in 2005 and was later produced at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, Washington D.C.'s Woolly Mammoth Theatre, and in Zimbabwe and South Africa. THE NEW YORK TIMES called it “A moving, smart, spirited and powerfully funny production.”

Written by Mia Chung, CATCH AS CATCH CAN centers on a prodigal son's return to blue-collar New England, a homecoming that sets off a crisis for two families and puts their relationships and identities at risk. The play moves across comedy, virtuosic performance, and unsettling dramatic territory, with its structure built around the idea of characters, and the play itself, resisting fixed roles.

The production is directed by ensemble member Amy Morton and features ensemble members Gary Cole, Audrey Francis, and Tim Hopper. Cole, a longtime Steppenwolf ensemble member, is returning to the Chicago stage for the first time in over 25 years. The show serves as the closing production of Steppenwolf's 50th Anniversary Season, playing at 1650 N. Halsted St.

In the heart of the Bible Belt, a local theatre company announces it will stage a play called Rapture in America—complete with seven seconds of male nudity—sending the city into a frenzy. Based on actual events, Eric Coble's Southern Rapture turns this civic eruption into a wickedly funny satire about artistic freedom, arts funding, the weaponization of civic institutions and what happens when conviction outruns common sense.

Originally commissioned by Actor's Theatre of Charlotte, Southern Rapture draws directly from one of the city’s most explosive cultural battles. In 1996, Charlotte Repertory Theatre announced a production of Angels in America.. The district attorney attempted to bring criminal charges, however, emergency court injunctions required the show to open. “Good Morning America” broadcast a train-wreck debate, turning a local arts dispute into a national spectacle.

Eighteen months later, county commissioners retaliated by slashing $2.5 million in arts funding, destabilizing organizations across the city. Although much of that funding was later restored, the interruption sent lasting ripples through Charlotte’s artistic landscape. Charlotte Rep won the Angels battle, but the controversy produced long-term consequences that cost it the war. Amid donor fatigue, mounting financial strain and leadership turnover, the company closed permanently in 2005.

ANTONY & CLEOPATRA to Close Shakespeare Project of Chicago's Season With Free Shows

The Shakespeare Project of Chicago will wrap up its 2025-26 Theatrical Reading Season with free performances of William Shakespeare's tragedy ANTONY & CLEOPATRA, running June 13, 14, 19, 20 and 22 at various Chicago-area venues.

Shakespeare's ANTONY & CLEOPATRA moves across continents and crashes through borders - Egyptian palaces, Roman battlefields, warships at sea. It's a play that refuses to stay small. At its center: two figures too large for any single world, speaking some of the most extravagant and heartbreaking verse Shakespeare ever wrote. Power shifts. Alliances crack. And the language keeps rising - sensuous, brutal, lyrical, and desperate, often in the same speech. This isn't a quiet tragedy. It's an epic that earns the word.

Directed by J.R. Interview: Sarah Stiles Talks World-Premiere Musical ICEBOY! at Goodman Theatre

Two-time Tony award nominee Sarah Stiles shares a preview of what’s to come in Goodman Theatre’s new summer musical Iceboy!, or The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O’Neill Came to Write “The Iceman Cometh.” She talks about what it’s like working on a world-premiere musical, getting back to her musical theater comedy roots with her character Lambert, and sharing a stage with co-stars Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, and Grey Henson.

Iceboy! is a world-premiere musical. What's it been like returning to the process of rehearsing and getting ready to stage a brand-new show?

I always forget how exhausting it is. I forget that I need lots of naps, and for my nutrition to be on point, and my therapy scheduled. It's been awesome. It's just a lot of work, definitely, for sure...The Goodman is great. I’ve never worked here before, but Chicago's amazing. So it's nice to be out of town, and just focused solely on it, you know?

What excites you most about returning to musical theater comedy?

That's my heart and soul. It's where I learned how to be funny and really how to act. It was the first thing I ever did, and I think it is such a fun and collaborative and exciting art form. It feels so good to be in front of a live audience and also be singing again. It's just been great.

How did you find your way into musical theater comedy? Because I feel like you have such a unique flair for that specifically.

I started when I was a kid doing community theater back in New Hampshire. I played Annie like a million times. And then I'm dating myself [but I had] cassette tapes of Cats and Les Mis and all of that that I would listen to until they peeled out of their plastic cases.

I fell in love with it as a child, and then I went straight from high school to New York, and I started at AMDA because it felt like the quickest way to get my bearings. I spent a year and a half there, and then I was, all of a sudden, living in New York and going to open calls.

That takes me to one of my other questions: What was the musical that made you say musical theater was for you?

I had a VHS tape growing up when I was little that my parents recorded off of the TV. I have to get the order because I feel like that's important. It had Annie, Flash Dance, and The Wizard of Oz, which I think pretty much defines my career. It shaped me. I think [the musical that really shaped me] was probably The Wizard of Oz, honestly. That’s a movie musical, but, then when I found out you could do it on stage, that was it!

And Les Mis was pretty...incredible. And then Rent came out and I was like, “Oh my god, this is really so cool.”

I mean, the art has changed so much over the years, but I love all those classic, old school musical theater Broadway shows, and then I love the new stuff that everybody's doing, too. And we're definitely doing something very unique here [with Iceboy!]

What's your history with Eugene O'Neill?

God, I have no history with Eugene O'Neill! I will say this: You don't need to know about Eugene O’Neill to really enjoy Iceboy!...If you do, there are some fun nuggets in here if you know The Iceman Cometh and Eugene O'Neill and all that. But you don't need to know it.

How do you physically and mentally prepare for this process of doing a new musical?

I always try to figure out what part of the character emotionally and physically I identify with, and then I do a lot of investigation into the why's and how's of that. Then I try to just put it under a magnifying glass and just blow it up.

For Tootsie, it was incredibly easy because I am, unfortunately, pretty close to that kind of neurotic. I will say playing [Sandy] was really hard to do for a year and made me a little bit insane. I knew that when I got offered the role. I remember my manager and agent were on the phone with me telling me I got the offer, and I said, “I think this role is gonna change my life and really help my career, but I also think she's gonna make me crazy.” And she kind of did.

With Hand to God, there was a stillness and an earth and a real intelligence — an emotional intelligence — about [Jessica] that I also do possess. And so living in her was like a dream.

Theater has always been [like therapy] because you live inside one moment over and over again. It's such therapy [when] you're really working through whatever that one thing is that the character is having to battle and deal with. And so the closer it is to things you have to do in your own life, the more work you get out of it, but also have to do.

So with Iceboy!, it's come to me in the most incredible of times....What's been beautiful about this experience is that [what my character Lambert] is going through — she’s having all these symptoms and having all these experience, which is really difficult, and she's really weighed down by it [Interviewer’s Note: You’ll have to watch Iceboy! to find out about Lambert’s condition — No spoilers here!] But then she also gets to fall in love and move through it...I feel really lucky to be doing this right now.

And...what I will say is that roles come to you. I'm very “woo woo” about all this kind of stuff. I think the roles find you, and they give you what you need in the moment. And truly, I can look at my career and see the growth that I've made as a result directly from playing those roles. Art is very deep for me, you know?

On the record, what can you tell me about Lambert [your character in Iceboy! - the assistant to star Vera Vimm, played by Megan Mullally)?

Lambert is Vera's right-hand girl. She's her support system. She is her maid. She is dealing with some struggles in her own life that keep her frozen in a way that we're all kind of frozen. So that condition that she has, which I don't want to spoil, is keeping her locked in this place where she can't really move forward. And throughout the course of the play — the journey for all of us in Iceboy! — is thawing.

What's it been like having Megan Mullally and Grey Henson as scene partners?

Incredible! I've been a fan of Grey's for a long time. Working with him is truly the easiest, funnest, most loving experience. He's just a delicious human being, who's so talented and so open and earnest and vulnerable and funny and generous. Working with him has just been incredible.

Megan is someone who I have always admired and looked up to and been inspired by, so actually working with her has been an absolute dream come true. She is so generous on stage and so collaborative...She really is the best. She's a giant, comedically. And her understanding of musical theater and storytelling and song — it's a masterclass, and so being able to spend this time with her is just such a gift...I feel really lucky. And Nick [Offerman is] incredible and watching them together is incredible. I know everyone's sick of saying how in love they are, but, really, they're so in love. It's crazy. It's a beautiful thing to watch.

What's your process for memorizing material, especially when it comes to a show like this where it's going to change throughout rehearsals in previews?

I find that I really need two sleeps to be really there. On one sleep I can say the lines, but on two sleeps, I can also act at the same time. So that's what I learned about myself.

Sometimes you don't get that opportunity. We had to perform at the Goodman gala, like we weren't even at rehearsal for a week. Grey and I were just like holding on to each other in fear, trying to remember all the words.

It's just one of those things. It's such a muscle. On TV, you have to do it pretty instantaneously. I mean, you can cut so that's nice. But you also don't want to be wasting everyone's time.

It's like lifting weights. And we're lifting a lot of weights in this show.

What do you hope that audiences take away from the show?

I hope they are in physical pain from laughing so much...The world is pretty dark right now. There's a lot of bleakness. And people are not super happy. And I think this show is two hours to just forget about everything and really laugh. And be surprised, constantly. I mean, we are laughing through all of the rehearsals. We're in tech, and we're still laughing at each other. I mean, we've seen some of these jokes a million times, and they're still surprising us, and they're still making us do that huge, wide-eyed, guffaw. I hope people just get to really have fun.

Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally sat down to discuss ICEBOY!, the world-premiere musical comedy opening at Goodman Theatre in Chicago, in a new interview clip posted ahead of the production's June 20 start. In the video, the two Emmy Award winners describe the show as "actually laugh out loud funny" and express enthusiasm for performing at what they call the best theater in the best theater town in the country.

ICEBOY!, whose full title is ICEBOY! Or the Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write The Iceman Cometh, features music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Jay Reiss, and a book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Jay Reiss. The production is a comedic, fictional riff on the origins of O'Neill's classic drama, framed as a musical event built around its two high-profile leads.

The show is directed by Marc Bruni and serves as the capstone to Goodman Theatre's Centennial Season. Performances begin June 20 and, following strong early interest, the run has already been extended through August 9. The cast also includes Grey Henson, Sarah Stiles, and Cedric Yarbrough.

Break out those kinky boots and strut down the Mag Mile! It’s Pride Month, and Chicago is overflowing with queer joy as the Broadway in Chicago tour of Kinky Boots rolls through town.

On June 10, Omari Collins “Scarlett D. Von’Du,” who plays Lola in the Broadway tour of Kinky Boots, and Robert Miller, who is a Swing and dance captain for the show, taught choreography from the closing number “Raise You Up” during a Dancing in Heels Workshop at the Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center in the South Loop. The participants donned colorful, sparkly heels to celebrate Pride Month and also brought in boots or shoes to donate for Brave Space Alliance’s Dignity Suite.

The dance studio was filled with glamour as everyone embraced their fierce inner divas and strutted and kicked in their heels. Angel cast members Jonathan Blake Flemings and Peyton Gaida supported in bringing the energy and helping the students learn the choreography, both from the back of the room and rotating with Collins and Miller at the front.

In the end, small groups took turns performing the fabulous choreography that they learned in less than half an hour, and it seemed like they were all ready to go onstage! It was a beautiful, fun time as everyone showed off their new moves with magnetic charm, power, and sass.

The special charity partnership also brought the show out of the studio and off the stage and into the local community. Brave Space Alliance left with two bags full of shoes to go to their Dignity Suite, a free initiative in Hyde Park that centers the needs of the trans and LGBQ+ community, BIPOC sex workers, and folks who have been historically “othered.”

This was more than a free hour-long dance workshop that supported a good cause. There was confidence, there was community, there was empowerment, and there was joy in that room — which is what Pride and Kinky Boots are all about.

BroadwayWorld spoke with Omari Collins and Robert Miller after the workshop to talk about Kinky Boots, Lola, and the power of dance, drag, and a sexy pair of heels. The interview has been edited for clarity.

Omari, you’ve had a long history with drag as Scarlett D. Von’Du, and this is your seventh time playing Lola in Kinky Boots, ranging from cruise ships to regional theater to now the Broadway tour! How has your relationship to Lola changed with each production, and what are you bringing differently to Lola on this tour?

OC: Every time I enter the role, I learn something new. It could be about myself, about the character, or about the people around me. I feel like each time I take those pieces and mix them all together, and it creates an entirely new way I look at Lola. This time around, I feel like I'm the fiercest, the most confident, and the most assured of myself that I've ever been in Lola.

What have you learned from Lola in finding strength, power, and love in the face of adversity, division, and hate?

OC: I think Lola preaches a message of love — just unconditional love and joy — and bringing that to any space that you enter. And I think that's what I've learned, is to bring love and joy into all spaces because that's what the world needs right now. We need love and joy in these terrifying times we're living in.

This is obviously a show about shoes, and as Lola educates us in the show, sex is in the heel. What do you love about a good heel?

OC: Let me tell you something, a good heel accentuates the legs, and it makes it look a mile long. There's something so sexy about a heel that is so attractive to me as a person, just in general. Anytime I'm wearing heels, I feel like I'm on cloud nine, like I'm rising above everything, and I'm strutting my way into life, you know? So I think a good heel is confidence.

RM: I love how it empowers me to strut my stuff. There's nothing like putting on the 6-inch stilettos at the end of the show and being like, ‘Oh, I am the diva now. This is my show. I am conquering the world in these heels. No one can stop me now.’ That's definitely the best part — the empowerment in the heel.

What do you hope the dance students take away from the workshop, and what do you hope patrons of Kinky Boots will get out of the show?

OC: I hope these dance students take away to just have fun, be confident, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and move on, and leave a little bit of life in the room, wherever you go. I hope patrons who come and see Kinky Boots take away that there's more to life than our differences, to receive everyone you meet with open arms and compassion, and to just meet people where they are.

RM: Today, I hope that the students take away from the class just lots of love. The show is surrounded by so much love. It was created and founded on love by the creatives themselves — Jerry Mitchell, DB Bonds, Rusty Mowery — they shared nothing but love for the show. So I hope they leave with open hearts, open minds, and just full of goodness and good energy. And the same goes with the audience for the show. I hope that they leave knowing that they can change the world if they change their mind, like Don says in the show, because it's really important to lead a life that is full of love and peace, especially in this current political climate, which is full of so much malice. It's really important that we inspire others to lead a life of love and goodness, always, always, always.

During a time when homophobia and transphobia are on the rise and we’re seeing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation such as drag bans being passed across the country, what does it mean to be performing Kinky Boots in 2026 during Pride Month and giving such powerful, visible representation to drag culture?

OC: Absolutely. Pride has always been a protest, and I feel like every time I get in drag, I am protesting. I am standing up for what I believe in, and this show does that so well. It is very well written and it doesn't beat you over the head with a message, but you leave with a message. So I think that's what it means, is to keep protesting and keep rising above and always speaking up for what you believe in and advocating for yourself. That's exactly what this means.

RM: Performing this show during this time, and especially during Pride, it honestly feels like a huge blessing. We’ve only performed one show [in Chicago] so far, and the audience was absolutely spectacular. They were electric the whole time. They were engaged from the moment the curtain went up to the moment the curtain went down. It is just amazing getting to be able to perform this iconic work and a work that is so loved by so many audience members, especially those in the LGBTQIA+ community. It's just an amazing feeling to go out there and just be like, ‘Hey everyone, we're here with you and for you. And we're going to keep fighting for our rights and keep fighting on until we die.’

How have dance, music, drag, and art allowed you to express yourself and cultivate a space for both joy and hope, and also protest and resistance?

OC: I feel like drag itself can be whatever the character wants it to be. It can be whatever I want it to be. Like I said, it's always been a protest and it's always been for us to be seen.

Rotating Cast Set for HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH at Catalyst Ranch

JK Entertainment has revealed the rotating cast of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, the cult-classic created by John Cameron Mitchell (Text) and Stephen Trask (Music and Lyrics). The production will run from July 9 through July 26 at the Catalyst Ranch, following the 25th anniversary of the film. This bold new staging, directed by Arlo Kiss with music directed by Jonathan James, will feature a distinctive rotating-cast approach, with three actors alternating through each role across performances.

The three rotating casts are labeled the Children of the Sun Cast, Children of the Earth Cast, and Children of the Moon Cast; named from the hit song 'Origin of Love'. The shows will rotate through each cast in that order.

The Sun Cast features Kyle Reid Hass as Hedwig, Sage Reid Priest as Yitzhak, and Zo as Tommy Gnosis. T

The name "Quetzalcoatl" originates from the ancient Mexican and northern Central American civilizations. It means “snake or serpent with feathers of quetzal,” which implies something divine or precious in the Nahuatl language. Quetzalcoatl was also the god of wisdom of the primitive Mexicans, a god of the air, or sun-god, who instructed them in the use of agriculture and metals.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT to Extend Run at TUTA Theatre Due to High Demand

TUTA Theatre has announced a six-week extension of its critically acclaimed production of Crime and Punishment, which has regularly sold out the company's 25-seat theater at 4670 N. Manor since opening on May 10.

Following strong audience demand and critical acclaim, the company will continue performances through August 23.

Directed by TUTA Co-Artistic Director Jacqueline Stone, the 90-minute adaptation by Marilyn Campbell and Curt Columbus brings Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel to the stage with a three-person cast.

After a hiatus from June 29 - July 8, the extension will continue the current Thursday and Saturday evening and Sunday matinee schedule through July 26. Following an additional one-week hiatus, from July 27 - August 5, performances will resume on August 6 with a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule through August 23.

The original cast will remain with the production throughout the extension, featuring Clifton Frei as Raskolnikov, Huy Nguyen as Porfiry and others, and Felix as Sonia and others.

Originally premiering at Writers Theatre in 2003, Campbell and Columbus' adaptation has been produced more than 100 times across the United States and internationally, with productions at theaters including Berkeley Rep, Intiman Theatre, 59E59 Theaters, Cleveland Play House, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Baltimore Center Stage, and Trinity Rep.

The adaptation condenses the tension and emotional power of Dostoevsky's novel into a focused theatrical experience. The story follows impoverished student Raskolnikov, who believes himself to be above the law and empowered to determine who deserves to live or die. His worldview is challenged when he encounters Inspector Porfiry, a master interrogator determined to force a confession from the increasingly tormented young man.

The New York Times praised the adaptation, writing, "Who would have thought that the novel no high school student has ever finished reading would make such engrossing theater?"

The production's creative team includes Co-Set Designers Tatiana Kahvegian and Keith Parham, who also serves as Lighting Designer. Additional creative team members include Costume Designer Lia Wallfish, Sound Designer Stefanie Senior, Properties Designer and Creative Producer Helen Lattyak, Stage Manager Becky Warner, Dramaturg Milan Pribisic, Assistant Director Letitia Guillaud, Co-Artistic Directors Aileen Wen McGroddy and Jacqueline Stone, and Managing Director Brad Gunter.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT to Extend Run at TUTA Theatre Due to High Demand

Following strong audience demand and critical acclaim, the company will continue performances through August 23.

Directed by TUTA Co-Artistic Director Jacqueline Stone, the 90-minute adaptation by Marilyn Campbell and Curt Columbus brings Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel to the stage with a three-person cast.

The original cast will remain with the production throughout the extension, featuring Clifton Frei as Raskolnikov, Huy Nguyen as Porfiry and others, and Felix as Sonia and others.

FLIP CIRCUS to Bring Big Top Experience to Six Chicago-Area Locations

The all-new amazing production of Flip Circus will bring its distinctive red and white striped climate-controlled big top to six different locations in the Chicago area over the course of nearly three months from June 19 through September 14.

This inaugural Chicago visit will make stops in Vernon Hills (June 19-30), Aurora (Jul 3-14), Gurnee (July 17-28), Lombard (Jul 31-Aug 11), Schaumburg (Aug 14-Sep 1) and North Riverside (Sep 4-14). ICEBOY! carries the full title ICEBOY! OR THE COMPLETELY UNTRUE STORY OF HOW EUGENE O'NEILL CAME TO WRITE THE ICEMAN COMETH, a premise that signals the show's comedic ambitions from the outset. The production features music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Jay Reiss, with a book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Jay Reiss, making it a reunion of creative voices with deep roots in musical comedy.

The extension was prompted by strong audience demand, adding performances beyond the show's original closing date. Goodman Theatre, which is celebrating its centennial season, is presenting the production as a marquee event for the anniversary year. Cast Set For THE AFFAIR OF THE POISONS Chicago Workshop Production

Molly Will, Aimee Kleiman, and Mary Margaret McCormack will star in the first workshop production of "The Affair of the Poisons," by Mark Burrows, this August at Edge of the Wood Theatre in Chicago.

"The Affair of the Poisons" tells the story of François Ravisson, an archivist hired to catalog a cache of documents dating from the reign of Louis XIV, which had been relegated to a storeroom and forgotten about since the Sun King's reign. What he discovers is an infamous and secret scandal; Louis may have built a glittering palace to rival any in Europe, but underneath the gilding lay a dark, criminal underworld brimming with a cartel of women supplying "inheritance powders." But what happens when the rash of poisonings and dead husbands reaches straight into the heart of Versailles? And in François' world of the nascent Second Republic, what will happen when France elects the popular, autocratic nephew of Napoleon to be its first President? Will there be time to finish uncovering the scandal before the new administration cuts off his access? Will the story of what happened to the dozens of women involved be lost to history again?

The show's creative team is led by Claire Yearman (director) and Aaron Zimmerman (music director).
