Review: SPRING AWAKENING at Musical Theatre Southwest

Spring Awakening is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the 1891 German play Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind. The musical tells the story of late 19th-century German teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of adolescence and sexuality in an oppressed society.

The show begins with teen Wendla Bergmann (Kimberly Jurgens), lamenting the fact that her mother gave her "no way to handle things" and has not taught her the lessons she is meant to know as a young woman. She tells her mother that it is time she learned where babies come from, a confrontation her mother tries to dodge and ultimately tells her a great untruth that will come to color the outcome of the entire show.

At the same time the boys of the show are learning Latin, being abused by their teacher and attempting to deal with their growing lustful feelings and puberty. One student, Melchior Gabor (Noah Smith) claims to have the answers to all the questions the boys are feeling – one boy, Mortiz Steiffel (Lennon Vossen) is particularly anxious and struggling with everything facing him. These troubles are soon to increase, as the school faculty (Jim Williams and Virginia Spotts, who play all the adult roles over the course of the show) plot to release Moritz from school at the end of term.

Both the girls and boys are grappling with questions none of the adults want to answer – the adults ascribe to the “children should be seen and not heard” philosophy, as well as caring far too much what the neighbors think (as opposed to their children). This sets up the action of the show, which deals with unrequited love, homosexuality, pregnancy, abortion, suicide and more.

Sound like an up night at the theater, right? Well, it is. The music is at times beautiful, troubling, sad and angry; standout numbers include “The Dark I Know Well,” sung by Martha (Kristina Padilla) and Ilse (Kyra Sprague) in a wonderful staging and lighting moment – kudos to lighting designer Brittney Baker and director Robb Sisneros for this powerful moment.

The ensemble number are the general standouts throughout the show, including a rousing “The Bitch of Living” and a sensual “The Word of your Body, (and its reprises as well).

The show is incredibly pertinent today, as we see our society attempting to stifle free speech, human rights and return us to the “good old days;” we seem to have a short term memory about what the good old days are and Spring Awakening is here to remind us all to never go back.

Big props to choreographer Donielle Torres for creating beautiful stage pictures and moments within each song. The ensemble dancing was especially on point and well executed; these were the strongest moments for me as an audience member.

However, I was disappointed to see MTS using tracks instead of live musicians for this show; it’s a show that really benefits from the hard-driving of a good rock band, the tracks created some oddly timed starts and finishes. My companion thought maybe too much funding is being used for licensing and not enough for live musicians? Something to think about moving forward.

And while the blank minimal stage was compelling, it could have used a bit more, I would have liked to see more use of levels for the action. I was not really sure what the choice was to have so many soloists singing upstage with backs to audience members – it was fine once or twice but annoying that so many of the solos were sung to a dead space. While it was encouraging to see MTS employing the great Zoe Burke as an intimacy coordinator (totally necessary for this play!), the choice to stage Wendla and Melchior’s sex scene in a back corner, blocked by the entire ensemble seemed to negate the entire point of the play.

Full disclosure, I always want to give MTS props for taking risks and making bold choices – it’s not something you see every day in community theater. All of their productions, even when there are moments missed there are far more moments of connection, and this Spring Awakening definitely connects with its audience.

The Adobe Theater will present THESE SHINING LIVES. The show runs from July 17th - August 9th. Fridays and Saturdays at 7.30pm, Sundays at 2.00pm. Saturday, August 1st, matinee only at 2pm. Thursdays, July 23rd and August 6th at 7.30pm ($10 tix available).

Written by Melanie Marnich, These Shining Lives is a touching historical drama, based on the true story of four women who worked for the Radium Dial Company, a watch company based out of Ottowa, Illinois, in the 1920s. The play follows Catherine Donohue (performed by Kristine Padilla) and her coworkers as they form friendships and find independence, unaware of the deadly radiation poisoning they are suffering from. It showcases the danger they face in this workplace and chronicles their fight for justice against the company, a landmark case that had lasting impacts on workers' rights and women's rights.

Ms Marnich is an American television writer-producer and playwright. She has written several other plays - all of which have been produced by many prestigious theatre companies in the USA.

Director Daniel Anaya (who was recently seen on stage in "Of Mice and Men") has chosen well-known actors to bring this story to the attention of The Adobe audiences - alongside Kristine are Clair Row, Kelly Hughes, Sarah Kesselring, Bailey Hunt, Michael Weppler and Castalia Mayerhofer. He considers this play to be incredibly compelling. "I am particularly drawn to the poetic and powerful nature of the writing, which begins with the Muriel Rukeyser (poet, essayist and political activist) quote: "If one woman were to tell the truth about her life, the world would split open." While this play does not sugarcoat the difficult events of the past, it manages to tell a tragic story with remarkable poise and grace."

BroadwayWorld Launches Producer Fantasy Game

Ever watched the weekly Broadway grosses roll in and thought you could pick the winners? Now you can put it to the test. BroadwayWorld has launched the Producer Fantasy Game, a free, season-long competition that lets theatre fans build a roster of Broadway shows and earn points based on how those productions actually perform at the box office. The draft window is open now.

How It Works

The setup is simple. During the draft window, you pick any six Broadway productions that opened this season. Drafting is non-exclusive, so there is no need to race a rival for a hot title. Any number of players can roster the same show.

From there, your shows go to work for you. Every week, each production on your roster earns fantasy points based on its reported box office grosses and capacity percentages. When Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle nominations and wins are announced, your shows bank bonus points on top of that. And each week you can answer our Fantasy Forecast prediction questions for up to five bonus points per correct call.

Weekly Scoring

Each week, a show earns one base point for every $50,000 it grosses, so a $1 million week is worth 20 base points. On top of that, shows can earn bonuses: up to five points for filling seats (based on how close to full capacity the house ran), six points for grossing $2 million or more (or three points for grossing between $1 million and $2 million), and eight points if its gross jumped at least 15 percent from the week before. A show loses four points if its gross dropped at least 15 percent. If a show goes dark and reports no gross for a week, it scores zero for that week with no penalty.

The Fantasy Forecast

The Producer Fantasy Game is really two games in one. The first is the box office game: drafting shows and earning points from their weekly grosses and awards. The second is the Fantasy Forecast, a weekly set of prediction questions about what's happening on Broadway, where each correct answer is worth up to five points. You can play one or both.

We track them separately so you can shine at either. Your Producer score covers the box office game, your Forecast score covers your prediction results, and your Combined score adds the two together for the overall championship ranking. The leaderboard lets you toggle between Overall, Producers, and Forecasters, so a sharp predictor can top the Forecasters board even during a rough season for their roster, and a roster powerhouse can lead the Producers board without answering a single question.

Managing Your Roster

Your lineup stays at six shows all season, and you have plenty of room to maneuver. You get one free drop every week, three additional season drops to use anytime before the trade deadline, and free replacements whenever a show on your roster closes. New productions open throughout the season and become available the moment they start reporting grosses, so it pays to keep a transaction in your pocket for that buzzy new opening.

Santa Fe Playhouse Receives Record $25K Shubert Foundation Grant, Launches Fundraising Campaign

The Santa Fe Playhouse has entered a season of fundraising for operational and programming costs for the remainder of the 2026 Season.

Shubert Foundation Grant Award

SFP is the proud recipient of a Shubert Foundation grant to be attributed to ongoing operational costs. The Shubert Foundation is the nation's largest funder dedicated to unrestricted funding of not-for-profit theatres and dance companies. In 2024, The Shubert Foundation awarded a record total of $40 million to 653 not-for-profit arts organizations across the United States.

The funding criteria set by the Shubert Foundation marks that grantee candidates must have a record of professional performance activity, a record of developing and producing new work, demonstrated fiscal responsibility, and minimum operating expenses of $150,000 annually. The Shubert Foundation gives priority in providing support to professional resident theatre and dance companies that develop and produce new American work.

This year, SFP has received a company record high of a $25,000 grant, having received the grant in gradually increasing amounts since 2023. As the needs of the organization grow, additional staffing costs grow with it. This grant marks a continued investment by nationally recognized granting organizations in the work and progress made by SFP's programming and initiatives.

Midyear Fundraising Campaign

To support ongoing artistic programming, separate from operational cost funding, SFP launches its midyear fundraising campaign for general donations.

As they enter the second half of their season, SFP aims to raise $50,000 by July 31 to stay on track and continue sustaining professional artists and fearless storytelling in Northern New Mexico. Unlike the Shubert Foundation Grant, which funds operations, this campaign directly supports the artists, designers, and design elements for the productions.

IT'S JUST DINNER to Open at Teatro Paraguas from Seventh Corner Productions

Teatro Paraguas will host Seventh Corner Productions and their original play, It's Just Dinner! Performances will run June 25-28, 2026.

Written by Grayson Pinto, Lily Pinto, and Reilly Stranahan, and starring Dakotah Rose, Grayson Pinto, Lily Pinto, Marika Sayers, and John Michael Hayley, the play is a raucous comedy. DICHOS EN NICHOS To Be Presented By Teatro Paraguas

Teatro Paraguas will present the premiere production of Dichos en Nichos, a new play written by author Sage Vogel, adapted from his award-winning book of the same name. Dichos en Nichos blends regional storytelling traditions, contemporary themes, and the cultural and linguistic richness of Northern New Mexico.

In this full-length, ensemble-driven production, the audience is taken into the heart of a "proverbial" 1950s Northern New Mexico village, where the orchards, arroyo-roads, adobe homes, and even pigsties hold tales of wit, woe, romance, and wisdom. In the play’s six interwoven acts, each scene serves as a ‘nicho,’ a vivid window into a community thrumming with the many rhythms of life, from poetry and music to tragedy and scandal. As their stories unfold, the colorful cast of characters exchange ‘dichos’—folk proverbs spoken in both English and New Mexican Spanish—to offer one another guidance, caution, and comfort as they navigate themes of identity, community, mortality, and love.

Dramatic, comedic, nostalgic, and culturally rich, Dichos en Nichos reflects Teatro Paraguas’ ongoing mission to develop and present contemporary bilingual theater that celebrates the linguistic, artistic, and cultural diversity of New Mexico, while amplifying regional voices through community-rooted storytelling.

Directed by Makaela Vogel and written by Sage Vogel, Dichos en Nichos features a local cast, crew, and creative team that includes their parents, prestigious artists Jim and Christen Vogel, and Santa Fe County Commissioner Camilla Bustamante as lead fundraiser.

SONIC LIVE IN CONCERT to Launch Global Tour With US and UK Premieres

As Sonic the Hedgehog celebrates 35 years as one of the most iconic video game franchises of all time, Senbla and SEGA today announced Sonic Live In Concert (www.sonicliveinconcert.com). This new concert experience brings the music and moments of the beloved video games to the stage.

Featuring iconic moments and music from the very first game in 1991 through today, the production will debut in the U.S. at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on September 26, 2026, before making its European premiere at London's Eventim Apollo on September 30. The U.S. tour will visit more than 30 cities nationwide, and a UK tour will follow in February 2027. More European dates will be announced at a later time. CUENTOS Set To Re-Launch Teatro Paraguas Teen Ensemble

Teatro Paraguas has announced the relaunching of the Teatro Paraguas Teen Ensemble, which will open with a production of Cuentos, a comedy with music by Carlos Morton and Angel Vigil.

Cuentos is a fast-moving comedy with music about a sister named Sheri (Mesa Harman) and a brother fondly known as Snake Eyes (Kingston Leyba) who hail from Denver. Their abuelita (Monica Arteaga), whom they are visiting, implores them to go to Chimayo to find Tia Juanita, who is a curandera with healing herbs and a magic spell. For abuelita has seen Doña Sebastiana at the foot of her bed, and knows that the doctor's medicine won't do her any good.

So the brother and sister hop in their parent's chevy and start to cruise to Chimayo. Along the way they encounter huge challenges: a bruja, La Llorona, and Doña Sebastiana herself (all portrayed by Miranda Sinkowitz-Arteaga). Adding to the suspense and chaos is the bruja's wily assistant duende, and the sinister la vibora (both roles played by Malina Asena-Velickovic).

Will they succeed in their mission to save abuelita, or will the forces arrayed against them prevail in the end?

JoJo Sena de Tarnoff, who is the director of the Umbrella Children's Theatre, will direct this inaugural production. The Teen Ensemble actors have all worked with JoJo for many years as members of the children's theatre. Having all graduated from that program, they wished to establish an ensemble of their own own.

JoJo and Jeff Tarnoff will accompany the actors with flute and keyboard.

Performances are Friday June 19, 2026 and Saturday June 20 at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21 at 2:00 p.m. at 3205 Calle Marie, Santa Fe. Review: OUT AT SEA at Theater Grottesco

Anyone remember the 1943 Warner Brothers Cartoon Wackiki Wabbit? It tells the story of two men trapped - first on a raft and then a deserted island. They encounter Bugs Bunny and try desperately to catch and eat him, only to be thwarted and left alone on the island where they start to hallucinate that the other man is a hamburger or a hot dog.

This was the first thing that popped into my mind while watching Theater Grottesco’s latest production, Out At Sea. It begins (and ends) in a small raft inhabited by three men, referred to only as Thin (John Flax), Medium (Kalob Martinez) and Fat (Koppany Pusztai). The first several minutes are set in silence, as each day passes and Thin scans the horizon for land. The lighting and chorography works together seamlessly to show the passage of time, as the audience realizes that the men have been castaways for at least 7 or 8 days since the play began.

By this time, the men are out of food and out of ideas for how to get anything to eat, so they decide that one of them will need to be eaten by the other two. The rest of the play is the three of them deciding who should make the ultimate sacrifice, as each man pleads their case as to why it shouldn’t be him. They try a variety of tactics – a vote, a sob story contest – to determine who will be the next meal.

In any trio, there is always the opportunity for triangulation, where two members gang up on or ostracize the third, and this play is no exception. Fat and Thin decide that Medium is the best candidate for their meal; they take turns trying to convince Medium that he needs to stop being selfish and give into their decision.

Does Medium give in? Do Thin and Fat get a shot at beating starvation? You need to see the play to find out.

All three men do a good job of telegraphing their increasingly desperate situation. The play, while absurdist, makes strong statements on hierarchy, caste and power – Mrozek wrote the play as a statement on the situation in his native Poland, which was falling to communism. Much of his work was banned in Poland due to his strong stance on the state of the country.

This marks the first time that Theater Grottesco has worked with a scripted play; the company usually starts with the physical style and works from there. In the Artistic Director’s notes, Flax states “Out At Sea required the opposite (from our usual model),. Fortunately, this is a beautifully sparse script…We have found moments for the chorus work we developed in Different (2019). We’ve also adapted found object puppetry to help tell the story.”

The company’s history with improv and clowning lends itself beautifully to this work; kudos to the directing team of Danielle Reddick, Brenna O’Brien, Apollo Garcia and the Grottesco Ensemble in finding ways to merge the company’s style with the script.

SPRING AWAKENING Will Come to Musical Theatre Southwest in June

Musical Theatre Southwest will continue its 2026 season with Spring Awakening, running June 5-28, 2026, in Albuquerque.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening features music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the production follows a group of teenagers struggling with identity, sexuality, repression, and the transition into adulthood. CABARET to Open at Santa Fe Playhouse's Alhambra Theater This Summer

Santa Fe Playhouse has revealed the cast and creative team of the musical CABARET, book by Joe Masteroff, music and lyrics by John Kander and Frank Ebb, directed by SFP's producing artistic director Anna M. Hogan.

CABARET will perform at the Scottish Rite Temple's Alhambra Theater from July 2 - 19, 2026. Performances will be on Fridays at 7:30 pm, Saturdays at 2 pm (not 7/4) and 7:30 pm, and Sundays at 1 pm and 6:30pm. Opening Night is Saturday, July 4 at 7:30 pm. Review: AT THE WAKE OF A DEAD DRAG QUEEN at Santa Fe Playhouse

Santa Fe Playhouse has described their 2026 season as “a battleground, a sanctuary and a mirror exploring power in all its forms: who holds it, who resists it and how it’s reclaimed.” Their current offering, At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen by Terry Guest, explores a marginalized community, drag queens in the early 2000s in rural Georgia, and how they use their art form to create their own power. The play is a one-act, two-person production that shines a light on Blackness, queer identity, chosen family, and the art of drag. It is loosely based on the playwright's uncle who passed away from AIDS.

The star and narrator is Courtney Berringers (Malcom Morgan-Petty), a black drag queen who has recently died (no spoiler alert here, she tells us she’s dead one minute into the show and it’s literally the title); she invites the audience into her self-produced wake. The action moves between the afterlife and flashbacks, as the play focuses on Courtney's life in rural Georgia in the early 2000s. As played by Morgan-Petty, Courtney is at once strong, powerful, vulnerable and flawed. In one scene she can go from the star of the show to insecure and unhappy, a complete contradiction of emotions and levels.

Courtney is joined onstage by friend, lover and confidante Vickie Versailles (Garrick Sigl), a new drag queen on the scene, who obviously worships Courtney and wants to learn from her as she commands the stage. Vickie is self-proclaimed rural poor white trash and despite her humble beginnings, she possesses big dreams and the desire to leave her past behind.

Their relationship starts as a one-night stand but then deepens into a friendship where Vickie (birth name Hunter) yearns for Courtney (birth name Anthony) to break down the walls she has to relationships and real emotions.

In flashbacks we see where these walls began, in Anthony’s childhood where he was belittled and made to feel less-than by his parents, classmates and society in general. We see that drag became an escape for a young person trying to fit in somewhere. Morgan-Petty does a wonderful job of capturing the people in his past who shaped him into the sometimes fierce, sometimes fragile Courtney.

Hunter had a similar upbringing, with an unaccepting family and a sense of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sigl gives Hunter/Vickie something that Anthony/Courtney seems to lack – the ability to dream bigger and the drive to try to rise above his fate. His portrayal of a homeless man from his past is a highlight of the play.

Drag Queen has amazing costumes by Nicole Clockel – they manage to be glamorous and glitzy but definitely look like they were made on a budget – as it should be for a drag club in rural Georgia. The set design, a main runway with dressing areas on each side, and staircases leading to the audience for closer interaction, is a bold and beautiful choice by Set Designer Alex Whittenberg. Lighting Designer Fabian Garcia does a wonderful job of creating a scheme that has stark differences between “onstage” and “backstage” moments. Director Damian Lockhart makes full use of the small and intimate space and gives both actors room to explore and engage with the audience.

The thing that stayed with me after this show was the ease and natural ebb and flow of conversation the two actors had; both Malcom-Petty and Sigl had volumes of script to memorize, but both took the words from the page and embodied them. The audience is invited into their inner world, which at times seems like an invasion of privacy, as if we are voyeurs. This made the entire production engrossing; the audience is invested in both these people and their stories.

At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen runs through May 31 at the Santa Fe Playhouse. It’s an important story, a magical production and something to not be missed.

Own page: start the section on a fresh page.
Fit one page: start fresh and scale the section to occupy the whole page.

A live preview pane re-renders the PDF on every change, so editors see the final printed result as they work rather than guessing and re-exporting.Beyond the strategy picker, the editor exposes a set of advanced controls familiar to anyone who has hand-tuned a long-form print document: hide-element selectors (drop sponsor strips or vestigial nav from the print version), forced page breaks before or after named elements, a draggable section-order list, custom header/footer/watermark text, and a custom-CSS escape hatch for theaters whose programs follow a house style.

The release also includes paper-level controls including US Letter or A4, portrait or landscape, three margin presets, three type scales, and a "booklet" mode that adds a binding gutter for stapled lobby printouts.

The PDF Editor is available now to all StageMag-enabled productions at no additional cost, under the Share PDF tab in the program editor. Existing programs render with sensible defaults; the new controls are opt-in and per-production.

Santa Fe Playhouse Managing Director Jessica Morrow Will Depart for Lincoln Center Theater

Santa Fe Playhouse has announced that Managing Director Jessica Morrow will leave the organization this summer after accepting a position with Lincoln Center Theater in New York City.

According to the Playhouse, Morrow helped implement a range of infrastructural and strategic initiatives during her tenure, strengthening the organization’s operational foundation and long-term planning efforts.

“Jessica has made invaluable contributions to the Playhouse in her tenure as Managing Director and has helped us make major strides towards our vision of being your local nationally acclaimed theater,” said SFP Board Chair Erin Bunkley in a statement. “The Board of Trustees is sorry to see her leave, but we are so proud and excited for her next role at Lincoln Center Theater.”

The organization said it has already begun a search for candidates to fill the Managing Director position.

The Playhouse also announced the establishment of the Santa Fe Playhouse Endowment Fund, created to support capacity building and long-term organizational sustainability beyond the theatre’s annual operating fund.

The fund was established with support from donor Bruce F. Stuart, a longtime supporter of the organization who became involved with the company during its 100th anniversary season. The endowment will be managed by Hightower Signature Wealth, formerly known as The Rikoon Group.

Santa Fe Playhouse stated that Morrow played a key role in finalizing the creation of the fund before her departure.

Located in a historic 99-seat adobe theatre in Santa Fe, Santa Fe Playhouse produces mainstage productions, new work development programs, educational initiatives, and its annual melodrama series. Review: BOEING BOEING at Albuquerque Little Theater

When I heard the Albuquerque Little Theater was presenting Boeing Boeing, I knew I needed to see it. Living in Santa Fe, I don’t often make my way to “the Big City,” but I’m glad I did.

I first encountered this play in college, working wardrobe on a production where I watched nightly from the wings as my then-roommate navigated the play’s romantic chaos in her caftan and red wig, while simultaneously juggling a real-life love triangle with the two male leads. While her situation didn’t have a neatly packaged ending like this play, it was an early lesson in the absurdity that fuels farce.

That production was also my introduction to the genre itself. Since then, I’ve worked with a European physical theater ensemble that draws on many of the same techniques required to execute farce well: precision, timing and total commitment to heightened circumstances. When those elements align, farce can feel effortless, but it’s anything but. This play, to me, is one of the best examples of this genre (outside of the operatic canon), and when the skills of farce are mastered, an actor can perform anything.

I’ve seen (and made) a fair amount of political theater lately *gestures broadly to everything.* It’s timely and necessary, but I’ve been missing the kind of theatrical experience that offers pure release.

Boeing Boeing, a farce written in 1960 by French playwright Marc Camoletti, offers this escape and then some. The premise is deceptively simple: Charming Parisian bachelor Bernard has three fiancées, all beautiful airline stewardesses, each unaware of the others, thanks to carefully staggered flight schedules. The arrival of faster Boeing jets, however, throws that system into chaos, bringing all three women to his apartment at once. Enter Robert, Bernard’s visiting friend from Wisconsin, who quickly becomes entangled in the increasingly frantic effort to keep the illusion intact. What could possibly go wrong!

Albuquerque Little Theatre’s production shines in several design elements. The set is attractive, of the era and highly functional for the play's circumstances. The props were realistic and handled beautifully by the actors. Bernard’s home felt, though aesthetically sharp, lived-in and comfortable, thanks to scenic designer Jason Roman, prop designer Calleigh Fife and the actors who believed in their circumstances. Costumes by Rachel Capener were uber stylish and character-specific, and the overall production design was cohesive. Sound by Sani Doolittle immediately placed us in the mid-century. Lighting Designer Emma Ziegler’s transitions between acts are slick, though I found the overall brightness a bit high, and I would have appreciated a stronger shift from Act II into Act III as the play moves into evening.

Performance-wise, the evening begins somewhat unevenly. Gloria, played by Darby Kolwyck, opens the play in a breakfast scene — pancakes and ketchup, how American — before heading off to her job with TWA. Her chemistry with Bernard (Isaac Dean Carrillo) didn’t immediately convince, and Bernard himself initially lacked some of the effortless, oozing charisma needed to make the premise plausible. That said, he quickly settled into the role and ultimately delivered an energetic performance with several strong comedic moments. Gloria returned for Act 3 and also delivered a highly enjoyable performance, in which I said, “Good for her.” Her alimony speech was chef’s kiss.

In the setting of the exposition, we meet Berthe, the exhausted and bored French maid, played by Alli Marie. She is responsible for *also* keeping track of the comings and goings of the three women, and most importantly, making up their rooms to their individual likings. It’s a wonderful role: dry, deadpan and full of ennui. She proved to have great instincts, and there were some genuinely sharp comedic beats, though at times the pacing lagged, and moments that should have snapped instead lingered, disrupting the rhythm.

Then comes Robert, played by Timothy Chivalette, and the production finds its engine. From his first moment on stage, he filled the house with energy, sure, a sort of character-appropriate-nervous-energy, but GLORIOUS ENERGY! As the outsider drawn into Bernard’s increasingly unmanageable scheme, he provides a clear and effective contrast, and the duo is set up for delicious hijinks with this casting. What impressed me most was that Mr. Chivalette was able to not only maintain, but build this high energy throughout the 2.5-hour evening, and even came beautifully undone as the façade came to a boil.

Gabriella, the fiery Italian fiancée played by Nicee Brown, is written as a fast-moving force of energy, but here the performance struggled to meet the needs of the show. The accent was heavy with a tendency for a downward cadence, paired with a slowed vocal delivery that made dialogue difficult to follow and, more importantly, disrupted the pace and momentum of the ever-heightening stakes and action. I did find her very believable in her disdain for Robert, her frustration with and love for Bernard, and her ability to stand her ground.

Gretchen, the German fiancée played by Sarah Kesselring, is a standout. From her first entrance, the performance is bold, grounded and fully in control of everything. Every single choice lands, and the arc from stern authority (and sometimes hostility toward Robert) to unexpected romance is wunderbar. I looked over at my friends and saw genuine tears in their eyes from the top-notch, hilarious performance.

By Act III, when all three women converge, the production finds a strong and tasty rhythm. Bernard’s unraveling plays well, Robert’s confidence grows and the women have the last laugh at the end of the day. The cast handles the classic door choreography with confidence, and those sequences begin to generate real tension – I was holding my breath! I wonder if there are a few more micro-moments of near misses that are possible between the lines that could be explored? Kudos to director Brandon Thomsen for shaping so much of what works here, especially in the ensemble’s rhythm and chemistry, and hello! for some of the most delightful bows I’ve seen in a while!

Ultimately, this production offered a highly enjoyable evening at the theater, complete with full belly laughs and the sudden urge to purchase go-go boots. The Albuquerque Little Theater’s staff was welcoming and friendly, the theater beautiful and alive and the production very strong.

The news comes as OPERATION MINCEMEAT celebrates its 500th performance on Broadway this Saturday, May 2, after hitting 2,000 performances worldwide - now playing simultaneously in the West End, on Broadway, and on tour across the UK. Following the North American leg, further stops on its international journey will include Australia, China, Mexico, and New Zealand.

About Operation Mincemeat

In OPERATION MINCEMEAT: A NEW MUSICAL, it's 1943, and the Allied Forces are on the ropes. Luckily, they've got a trick up their sleeve. Well, not up their sleeve, per se, but rather inside the pocket of a stolen corpse. Equal parts farce, thriller, and Ian Fleming-style spy caper (with an assist from Mr. Fleming himself), OPERATION MINCEMEAT tells the wildly improbable and hilarious true story of the covert operation that turned the tide of WWII.

Written by triple Tony Award nominees SpitLip (comprised of David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoë Roberts), OPERATION MINCEMEAT began performances on Broadway on February 15, 2025, and continues to play at the historic Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street), where it has been extended eight times and will soon celebrate its 500th performance. The West End production, which has been playing at the Fortune Theatre since March 29, 2023, is widely recognized as one of the best-reviewed shows in West End history, holding the record for the most five-star reviews for a new musical, with a tally of 131. OPERATION MINCEMEAT has just launched its world tour, beginning with a UK leg before heading across the pond.

Olivier Award nominated Robert Hastie (Standing at the Sky's Edge, National Theatre – Best New Musical Olivier Award winner) will reprise his work for the tour, while Olivier Award nominated Jenny Arnold (Jerry Springer: The Opera, National Theatre) continues as Choreographer. The creative team will include Olivier nominated Set and Costume Designer Ben Stones (Standing at the Sky's Edge), Tony and Olivier winning Lighting Designer Mark Henderson (The History Boys), Tony nominated Sound Designer Mike Walker (Charlie & The Chocolate Factory), Tony nominated Orchestrator Steve Sidwell (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), and Olivier nominated Music Supervisor Joe Bunker (Spring Awakening). Georgie Staight is Associate Director and Paul Isaiah Isles is Associate Choreographer. Production Stage Management is by Geoff Maus, Casting is by Carrie Gardner, CSA, and General Management is by TT Partners.

OPERATION MINCEMEAT has been nominated for 64 awards since opening at the 77-seat New Diorama Theatre in 2019, winning 13, including Best Musical 3 times, from the Olivier Awards, WhatsOnStage Awards, and Off-West End Awards. On Broadway, the show was nominated for 4 Tony Awards in 2025, including Best Musical. The production won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Jak Malone's portrayal of Hester Leggatt, who previously won the Olivier Award in the same category. RAGTIME Will Launch National Tour in Fall 2027

Lincoln Center Theater’s Broadway revival of Ragtime, directed by Kewsong Lee Artistic Director Lear deBessonet, announced today that it will launch a North American Tour in the fall of 2027. The tour will premiere at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre in Buffalo, New York, before continuing onto cities across the U.S. and Canada. Additional tour stops and casting will be announced at a later date.

Lincoln Center Theater’s limited engagement of Ragtime has been extended twice by popular demand with performances now through August 2, 2026. The production set a new box office record at the Vivian Beaumont Theater and was recently nominated foreight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Direction of a Musical (Lear deBessonet), as well as five Drama League Awards including Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Direction of a Musical (Lear deBessonet).

“Ragtime is one of the most ambitious musicals ever written, and it feels timelier than ever,” said producers Tom Kirdahy, Kevin Ryan, Robert Greenblatt, and Lamar Richardson in a statement. “What Lear deBessonet and this extraordinary company have created at Lincoln Center Theater is both epic in scale and deeply human. We couldn’t be more excited to share it with communities across North America.”

OH, MARY! Reveals Tour Dates and Cities For 2026-27

The North American Tour of Oh, Mary! has announced the dates and cities for its 2026-27 season. The tour of the Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning comedy will tech and launch at The Bushnell in Hartford, Connecticut, with performances beginning September 19, 2026. Written by Tony Award and Olivier Award winner Cole Escola and directed by Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton, Oh, Mary! opened on Broadway on July 11, 2024, and continues to play at the Lyceum Theatre, where it became the first show in the theatre’s 121-year history to gross more than $1,000,000 in a single week. Oh, Mary! has since broken its own box office record twelve times and became the first show of the 2024-25 Broadway season to recoup its investment. Oh, Mary! opened to rave reviews in London’s West End on December 18, 2025.

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

The Popejoy Presents Roybal-Mack & Cordova, P.C. Broadway in New Mexico Series, in partnership with Broadway Across America, has contributed more than $47 million in economic activity over the past 24 months. During the current season alone, Broadway presentations at Popejoy Hall are expected to generate more than $26 million for the local economy.

Popejoy Hall draws audiences from across Albuquerque and communities throughout New Mexico. These patrons contribute to the local economy through dining, transportation, retail, and lodging, extending the economic benefits of Broadway performances well beyond the theater.

Recently, The Broadway League released the Economic Impact of Touring Broadway 2023–2024 report. According to the report, Touring Broadway generates substantial direct spending from producers, presenters, and venues, while also drawing audiences into nearby local businesses. This activity creates a ripple effect throughout the local economy, as dollars spent in connection with Broadway performances continue to circulate across industries and extend into surrounding communities.

NEWSIES Unseats LES MISÉRABLES to Win BroadwayWorld's 2026 Ultimate Movie Musical Bracket

After six weeks of voting, BroadwayWorld readers have crowned Newsies the Ultimate Best Movie Musical in the 2026 edition of BroadwayWorld's Annual Bracket. The 1992 Disney film, directed by Kenny Ortega and featuring music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, defeated Les Misérables in the final round, ending the Tom Hooper-directed film's two-year winning streak.

In both 2024 and 2025, Les Misérables was voted as the Ultimate Best Musical of all time, making it the title to beat heading into this year's competition. Newsies, a perennial fan favorite that developed a devoted following after its theatrical release and has since been adapted for the Broadway stage, advanced through six rounds of head-to-head matchups before claiming the title.

Now in its third year, BroadwayWorld's Bracket invites readers to debate, defend, and ultimately crown the greatest movie musical of all time from a field selected by BroadwayWorld editors. Voting in the 2026 edition opened on Tuesday, February 24 and concluded on Sunday, April 12, with new matchups released each week.

SHIRLEY VALENTINE to be Presented at North Fourth Theatre This Spring and Summer

Continuing its 10th anniversary year, West End Productions will present Shirley Valentine at North Fourth Theatre, 4904 4th St. NW, Albuquerque, NM, for three weekends from May 29 – June 14, 2026. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm.

Shirley Valentine was the inaugural show of West End Productions in 2016. Welcome back Jessica Osbourne. It has been ten years since her outstanding performance in the beloved 1986 one-woman play by Willy Russell, about a middle-aged housewife who escapes her mundane, stagnant life and neglectful husband for a transformative holiday in Greece. Colleen Neary McClure once again directs Ms. Osbourne in this heartwarming, comedic monologue focusing on self-discovery, liberation, and rediscovering one's identity.

“Shirley” inhabits her “full-fit” kitchen and makes her husband’s supper as she tells us about her life—“Joe,” the children, and her friend “Jane,” who has just invited her to join a vacation in Greece. She talks to the wall and the audience as she convinces herself to stay or go. Wine helps to lubricate Shirley’s feelings and reminiscences while she makes a mental pro-and-con list. In just two funny and charming scenes, we get a sense of her prosaic life and her longing to leave it (Talkin’Broadway 2016).

The Great American Trailer Park Musical, written by David Nels and Betsy Kehlso, and directed by Cameron Illidge-Welch, is a raucous, heart-filled musical comedy set in the fictional Armadillo Acres, a most exclusive trailer park, in North Florida.

There is a new tenant and she is wreaking hurricane-type havoc on this quiet little community. When 'Pippi', a stripper on the run, comes between housewife 'Jeannie', a Dr. Phil-loving agoraphobe, and her tollbooth-collector husband 'Norbert', the storms begin to brew. What follows is a wildly entertaining mix of infidelity, desperation, loyalty, and unexpected compassion.

Packed with outrageous humor, big personalities, and a country-rock score, the show embraces camp and chaos while ultimately revealing surprising emotional depth and redemption beneath the trailer-trash glitter.

Last year Cameron directed The Red Velvet Cake War and A Year In Quirky Town, both at The Adobe. He chose to direct this play "because it truly is what I feel I do best super high comedy with a moral and real heart underneath it. While this show looks like a huge funny romp through crazy Florida people land it really is one of the most heartfelt cries for acceptance of the life we choose vs the life we want!" Bringing the characters to life are Michelle Volpe Roe ('Pippa'), Laura Cummins Wright ('Jeannie'), Eddie Dethlefs ('Norbert) with Carolyn Hogan, Emily Melville, Xandra Michele, and Russell Rietmann.

Santa Fe's physical theater ensemble, Theater Grottesco, will present Sławomir Mrożek's Out at Sea in May 2026 at Teatro Paraguas. Directed by committee with Danielle Louise Reddick and other Grottesco ensemble members, this absurdist comedy plunges audiences into a darkly comic struggle for survival as three castaways drift between desperation and diplomacy on a makeshift raft. What follows is a series of votes, speeches and procedural debates as they attempt to reach a "fair" decision.

The ensemble features TG founding Artistic Director John Flax, Company Member Koppány Pusztai, and new to the ensemble, award-winning puppeteer Kalob Martinez. The play runs May 14 - 31, 2026 at Teatro Paraguas' Second Space in Santa Fe, NM. Out at Sea is presented through arrangements with Concord Theatricals.

About Out at Sea:

In Sławomir Mrożek's Out at Sea (1962) , three men are stranded at sea, out of food and negotiating which of them should be eaten. What follows is a series of votes, speeches and procedural debates as they attempt to reach a "fair" decision. The play is a satirical look at power, persuasion and the fragile logic of civilized systems under pressure.

Sławomir Mrożek (1930-2013) was a prominent Polish playwright and writer widely regarded as a major voice of the Theater of the Absurd and post-absurdist drama in the world of Beckett, Genet and Ionesco. Born in Borzęcin, Poland, he began his career writing satirical sketches and short stories, including the acclaimed collections The Elephant and The Ugupu Bird, which humorously skewered bureaucracy and reflected the political tensions of postwar Poland.

His international breakthrough came with Tango, a landmark play examining order, rebellion and generational conflict as a mirror of broader social upheaval. Across his body of work, Mrożek fused surrealism with sharp realism, using irony and absurdity to critique authoritarian systems, conformity and human behavior. Today, Mrożek remains an influential figure in modern theater, celebrated for his incisive wit and enduring insight into the fragile structures that govern society.
