Prepare a monologue of up to two minutes, preferably one that shows verbal facility. Shakespeare is not recommended.

Helen
CAST. 40s. An intelligent, opinionated woman whose life has been disappointing. Once a member of Long Island Jewish society, her marriage to a WASP and her disability have isolated her and made her focus on her relationship with her college-age son. She is confined to a wheelchair for much of the play.

Jerry
CAST. 40s. A not-very-successful novelist whose divorce from Emma has given him an excuse to avoid his son. Now, as he prepares to marry a second time, he begins to intervene in Matt's life, possibly for Matt's benefit but also to assuage his guilt.

Matt
CAST. Must read as 18. A smart, conflicted young man about to choose a college and torn between his parents' opinions. He has been Helen's companion for so long that she takes it for granted, and he's begun to resent it.

seeking:

Sebastian
50s, British. A failed novelist, now a critic. He has a caustic sense of humor and a cold veneer that makes him seem careless of others' feelings, but his love for Lydia gradually reveals itself as he tries to protect her from reality.

Lydia
50s, East European. A former refugee from Estonia who suffered greatly during World War II. Her life with Sebastian is comfortable but on the surface in not a loving one. Now gravely ill, she discovers that she cares for him more than she thought, and he for her.

Mark
40s, American. A wealthy friend of Sebastian and Lydia who has long secretly loved her. Despite his disapproval of Sebastian's treatment of her in the past he reamins his friend and becomes his confidant as Sebastian tries to make her final wonths happy ones.

Joey
20s, British. Sebastian and Lydia's son, a budding television producer who longs for Sebastian's approval but resents the effort it takes. He knows Lydia wants him to reconcile with his father but resists.

This is the second part of a three-year project of Shaw's cycle of visionary plays. The cast from 2013-14 will return, with the addition of two actors to be cast.

Seeking/New this year:

Man # 5
Asian. The brilliant and sardonic H0me Secretery of Britain 250 years from now, and the Ambassador from the British Empire to the long-lived Oracles 5000 years further on.

Woman # 4
African. The glamorous and flirtatious Domestic Minister of Britain 250 years from now, and the Ambassador's wife 5000 years further on.


The following roles will be filled by actors cast last year in Part 1. Others will be considered for possible replacements or understudies.

Man #1
CAST. 50s. Plays Burge-Lubin, the Prime Minister 250 years from now, and General Aufstieg, a bombastic statesman 5000 years further on.

Man #2
CAST. 50s. Plays Barnabas, the Finance Minister 250 years from now, and Zozim, a man who has lived centuries 5000 years further on.

Man #3
CAST. 60s-70s. Plays The Elderly Gentlemen in Part 4, a discouraged but brave man facing the future with dismay.

Man #4
CAST. 40s. Plays the Archbishop of Canterbury 250 years from now.

Woman #1
CAST. 40s Plays Mrs Lutestring, a woman who has lived centuries 250 years from now, and Fusima, a servant of the Oracle 5000 years further on.

Woman #2
CAST. any age. Plays the Oracle, a woman of great power, 5000 years from now.

Woman # 3
CAST. 20s. Plays Zoo, a “flapper” who is older than she appears 5000 years from now.

Richard Halton
30s-40s, British. In love with Maria, and also in love with her wealth, he's willing to put up with being tested by her until her behavior makes him question his intentions.

The Duke of Bristol
40s, upper-class British. An egotistical but impoverished aristocrat who is Richard's friend. He decides to marry Helen and is dismissive of her eventual doubts.

Helen Hayle
30s, British. A pleasant Englishwoman in love with the Duke, and with his title, but his behavior makes her have second thoughts.
