FETCH CLAY, MAKE MAN

Synopsis: 1965
In the days leading up to one of Cassius Clay’s most anticipated fights, the heavyweight boxing champion forms an unlikely friendship with the controversial Hollywood star Stepin Fetchit. Fetch Clay, Make Man explores the improbable bond that forms between two drastically different and influential cultural icons. One a vibrant and audacious youth, the other a resentful and almost forgotten relic, together they fight to shape their legacies amidst the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-1960’s. This true story is as powerful and poetic as Clay himself, while also as humorous and irreverent as Fetchit’s signature act.

Synopsis: 1970’s
This is the play that put David Mamet on the map as a major American playwright when it appeared on Broadway in 1977, winning the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play. Set in an urban junk shop, three small-time crooks plan to rob a man of his coin collection, including what they believe to be an extremely valuable “Buffalo nickel”. However, as the night goes on, motivations change, loyalties squirm and shift, and paranoia rises to generate heart-pounding drama.

A whirlwind of crackling dialogue and tricky questions by the fearless and funny Lydia Diamond (Stick Fly) explores the inescapable nature of racism, directed by True Colors Artistic Director, Kenny Leon. A new McCarter commission premiered at the Huntington Theater in Boston in 2013.
