Choose one of the following (not to exceed 3 minutes total):

- two contrasting contemporary monologues;

- one monologue and sixteen bars of a song from the Broadway/musical theatre canon;

- one full song from the Broadway/musical theatre canon. Accompanist provided on April 20 only.

R. BUCKMINSTER FULLER: THE HISTORY (AND MYSTERY) OF THE UNIVERSE

Synopsis: Unconventional one-man show chronicaling R. Bukminster Fuller, engineer, environmentalist, futurist, poet, philosopher and inventor of the geodesic dome.

R. Buckminster Fuller (ROLE CAST. Seeking understudy)
Caucasian man, 50s-60s. Understudy will perform at least 2-3 times.

A LITTLE PRINCESS

Synopsis: Musical coming-of-age tale following young Sara Crew as she transitions from a charmed life in colonial Africa to a challenging existence in a Victorian-era London boarding school.

ADULTS:
Captain Crewe
Male. Explorer & adventurer who adores his daughter, Sara. Sensitive, handsome, courageous & deeply ethical. To play 30-45. Vocal range: A3 to G5.

Aljana
Female. Sara’s African nanny during her childhood on the continent. Kind, charismatic & firm. To play 25-35. Vocal range: A3 to G5.

Miss Minchin
Female. Story's antagonist. Head of the school. Domineering, unyielding, bitter at times. To play 40-55. Vocal range: F3 to B4.

Miss Amelia
Female. Miss Minchin’s younger, kinder sister. Teacher at the school. Easily flustered, perhaps a bit dim, but with a good heart. To play 25-35. Vocal range: A3 to E5.

Queen Victoria
Female. Her Royal Highness. Deft, dry sense of humor. Charming, kind but stately. To play 18-25. Vocal range: C4 to G5.

CHILDREN:

Sara Crewe:
Female. Story's protagonist. Intelligent, witty, sensitive, pretty. Raised as an only child with privilege in a British colony in Africa. To play 12-15. Vocal range: G3 to E5.

Pasko
Male. Appealing, loyal & bright African male. Though Captain Crewe’s guide & confidant, he views the Captain as somewhat of a father figure. To play 15-18. Vocal range: B3 to A5.

Becky
Female. Scrawny, underfed orphan & scullery maid working at the London boarding school. Becomes Sara’s first friend but is picked on by the other girls. To play: 11-14. Vocal range: G3 to C5.

Ermengarde
Female. First of the girls to befriend Sara. Sweet, childlike & very sensitive. To play 11-14. Vocal range: G3 to E5.

Lavinia
Female. Ring leader of the girls who dislike Sara. Nasty, condescending, calculating & witty. To play 12-15. Vocal range: A3 to D5.

MOXIE

Synopsis: World premiere, globetrotting adventure tale following the mysterious and magical Book of Moxie as it trades hands and visits Afghanistan, Paris, India and inner-city Detroit, changing minds and hearts along its journey.

ADULTS:

Actor A (Male/Female)
Bookbinder: Old eccentric book smith. Dynamic character with seemingly endless flow of words. Nothing gets by him/her except maybe the obvious. Always in the act of straightening and fixing. Soldier 1: Ranking soldier. Strong Scottish, British, or Irish dialect. Strong comic sensibility. Pleased when his/her instincts are correct, but a little frightened by the fact that his/her instincts are correct.

Actor B (Male)
Murph: Late 20s/early 30s. Tough as nails on outside, soft & warm on inside. Uses the act of telling, writing, & illustrating stories as a way to cope with the extreme stress & ugliness he encounters as a marine on duty. Needs to be able to tell a compelling heartfelt story, but also give us “tough marine”. Jeffrey’s father. Soldier 2: Subordinate soldier. Strong Scottish or Irish dialect. Eager to do his job. A little too eager. Strong comic sensibility.

Actor C (Female)
Mom: Late 20s/early 30s. Strong, as she is both a nurse and Marine wife. Good with kids. Jeffrey’s mother. Doreen Winters: Late 20s/early 30s. Teacher in Detroit. Fun, energetic, patient, and relates super well with kids.

Actor D (Female)
(ROLE CAST) Madam: Old French woman, most likely in her very late 80s. Woman of refined tastes, elegant & somewhat demanding. Suffering from dementia. Has a mysterious past and many secrets

Actor E (Female)
(ROLE CAST) Kinah: Afghani girl around 14-15 who lives in remote tribal Afghanistan. Just recently forced to wear a Chador/niqab. Currently living in an orphanage, as her mother has been put away for being “crazy,” & her grandfather has been exiled for teaching girls. Desperate to get to her grandfather. Mahiya: 11-14 year old Indian girl. Primary caregiver to her two younger sisters. Sweet singing voice. Uses music & story to bring joy into their impoverished home. India Harris: 11-12 year old girl in Doreen’s Detroit classroom.

Actor F (Male)
Omald: 11-14 years old. Omald is an Afghani boy growing up in remote tribal Afghanistan. A product of his surroundings. Projects the male-centric culture but is conflicted by the affection that he has for Kinah. Cecil: Mid 20s. A project manager hired by Madam’s son to pack up her belongings and ship her to an assisted living facility. Dreams of becoming a video game designer for Sony. Kevin Lewis: 11-14 years old. Classmate to Marcus in Detroit.

CHILDREN:

Actor G (Male)
Marcus: 11-12. Extremely intelligent young man. All the kids in his Detroit class think he’s the best storyteller in school. Shy at first but opens up when he reveals a wisdom and curiosity that is well beyond his years.

Actor H (Male)
Jeffrey: 8-10. Escapes into the world of first person shooter games in an attempt to feel closer to his father Murph, who is stationed thousands of miles away in Afghanistan. Bullied at school for being the product of an interracial marriage. Not afraid to defend himself & may on occasion even throw the first punch. Howard Keller: 8-12. In Doreen’s Detroit classroom.

Actor J (Female)
Ruhi: 10-12. Mahiya’s younger sister in India. Rita Cole: 10-12. In Doreen’s Detroit classroom.

Actor K (Female)
Gita: 8-10. Mahiya’s youngest sister in India. Marion Leonard: 8-10. In Doreen’s Detroit class.

Synopsis: In this lush, romantic musical set in Italy in the 1950s, themes of sacrifice, destiny and the effervescence of first love come to vivid life via the characters of an American tourist named Margaret Johnson, her curious daughter Clara and Fabrizio, a dashing Florentine young man.

Margaret Johnson

(F) Elegant, self-possessed, practical & witty Southern woman. Wife of wealthy businessman. Strong, self-assured. To play mid- late 40s to late 50s. Mature Soprano with strong middle voice. Range low A to high G

Clara Johnson

(F) Margaret's 26 -year-old daughter. Young & naive for her age. Spirited & curious. Embodiment of youthful American optimism. Soprano with strong voice in both ends of range. Low A to high A.

Fabrizio Naccarelli

(M): 20 years old, handsome & charming Florentine. Youthful, passionate, energetic, distractible. On the cusp on manhood. Lyrical Tenor. Low B flat to high A. Speaks Italian, and speaks/sings English with an Italian accent.

Giuseppe Naccarelli

(M): Fabrizio's older brother. Works at the family tie shop. A lady's man. Very Italian. Fashionable, suave & snappy. To play late 20s -mid 30s. Must move well. The most physical character in the show. B flat to D. Speaks in Italian.

Franca Naccarelli

(F): Guiseppe's wife. Very passionate, physical & strong. Fashionable. Discontent in her marriage. Embodiment of Italian hot-blooded femininity. To play late 20s-mid 30s. Darker Soprano or Mezzo Soprano with strong head voice. Low B flat to high B. Speaks Italian & English with an Italian accent.

Signor Naccarelli

(M). Fabrizio's father. Owns & manages the family tie shop. Very charming, charismatic & smooth. Fashionably impeccable. Loves his family. Epitome of the classic Italian gentleman. To play mid-late 40s to late 50s. Low A to D. Speaks Italian and English with a light Italian accent.

Signora Naccarelli

(F): Fabrizio's mother. Cunning, intelligent. Elegant, fashionable. An observer. To play mid-late 40s to late 50s. Soprano with strong low range or Mezzo with strong high notes. Low C sharp to high B. Speaks in Italian but sings in English.

Roy Johnson*

(M): Margaret's husband. From Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Wealthy businessman. Determined, sure and staunch. To play mid to late 40s to late 50s. No singing.

Priest*

(M): Italian. Instructs Clara in the Latin catechism. Speaks & sings in Italian. To play mid to late 40s to late 50s Vocal range: G to D.

Tour Guide*

(M): Male or Female. Adult. No singing.
