PREPARATION
Total of 3 minutes: Either one song and one monologue, or two monologues. Bring sheet music in the key you plan to sing, headshot and resume.

BREAKDOWN
The Four Immigrants
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Min Kahng, Based on Manga Yonin Shosei by Henry Yoshitaka Kiyama, Translated as The Four Immigrants by Frederik L. Schodt, World Premiere. Directed by Leslie Martinson
Rehearsals begin June 13, 2017
Performs July 12 – August 6, 2017 at the Lucie Stern Theatre, Palo Alto
Setting: The show begins in 1904, and ends in 1924, primarily in San Francisco, California, and nearby locations.
Charlie (Male, Japanese, Tenor, 19-39), Optimistic, charismatic, convincing. He has studied American society, and loves Western philosophy & ideas.
Frank (Male, Japanese, Baritone, 19-39), Kind-hearted, not very bright. Loyal, determined. Secretly, loves selling shoes. Also plays “Twin Child.”
Fred (Male, Japanese, Baritone, 20-40), Down-to-earth farmin’ boy who loves the ladies. Came to seek his fortune. Also plays “Bum”, “Charlie’s Father” and “Bakkapei Bao.”
Henry (Male, Japanese, Tenor, 18-38), Quirky and talented artist who loves finding humor in unexpected places. Came to San Francisco to study at the Art Institute. Also plays “Bum”.
The female cast members play all the other characters, both male and female, primarily Asian-American roles.
Elder (Female, Mezzo, 30s-40s), To play roles including the “Elder at the Buddhist Church”, “Frank’s Lady”, “Hot Dog Doug” and “Scared Bride.”
Kimiko (Female, Alto, 30s-40s), “Kimiko” is a sturdy, strong farmwoman, with a commanding demeanor, who marries Fred. Other roles include “Robber”, “Henry’s Lady”, “Parrot”, and “White Man.”
Anti-Asiatic Leaguer (Female, High Belter, 20s-30s), Other roles include “Fireman”, “Liberty Belle”, “Giddy Bride”, “White Man” and “Toddler.”
Hana (Female, Soprano, 20s-30s), Hana is a performer at the Pan-Pacific Exposition who later marries Charlie. Other roles include “Dr. Omori”, “White Lady”, “Fan-Tan Dealer”, “Judge” and “Vague Bride.”

Faye (Female, African American, mid-late 50s), Working class woman. Tough and a lifetime of dirt beneath her nails. Somewhere, deep compassion.
Dez (Male, African American, mid-late 20s), Working class man. Young hustler, playful, street-savvy, and flirtatious…Somewhere, deeply sensitive.
Shanita (Female, African American, mid-late 20s), Working class young woman. Pretty but not ruled by it. Hard-working. By-the-books. Believes in the work she does. Also, pregnant. Somewhere, a beautiful dreamer.
