Breakdown

2014-15 SEASON

THE HOW AND THE WHY
by Sarah Treem
Director: Margaret Ledford
Rehearsal Start: October 14, 2014
Performance Dates: November 7 – 30, 2014

Two brilliant women scientists, mother and daughter, meet for the first time on the eve of a national conference. Both are evolutionary biologists who share a zeal for science and a bold, contrarian approach to their male-dominated field. As they struggle to find the connection that any mother and daughter cherishes most, the truth about their history and relationship unfolds, and the scientists clash over differing views on evolution, feminism and generational divides in modern America. From the writer/producer of television hits like House of Cards and In Treatment comes this smart and compelling new play about science, family and survival of the fittest.

Seeking:

Rachel Hardeman
28, evolutionary biologist. Emotional. Excitable. Brilliant.

Zelda Kahn
56, evolutionary biologist. Senior professor at Harvard. Reserved Cynical. Brilliant.

I AND YOU
by Lauren Gunderson
Director: Dodd Loomis
Rehearsal Start: December 23, 2014
Performance Dates: January 16 – February 8

Only in high school would two completely unconnected people – cranky, chronically ill Caroline and levelheaded basketball star Anthony – be paired to collaborate on a project to deconstruct a poem about the interconnectivity of everything. But as the two teens cram to finish their presentation on Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, a very real connection is made, and they ultimately learn of the deeper mystery which has brought them together. . I AND YOU, the 2014 Steinberg/ATCA Award winner, is a valentine to youth, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness.

Seeking:

Anthony
A boy, 17. He is neat, poised, mature for his age. African-American. He is an A student, a team player, a nice guy.

Caroline
A girl, 17. She is cynical, over it, does not let a stray “feeling” near the surface. White.

UNCERTAIN TERMS
