Breakdown

Please note that this is an ALL FEMALE production of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. All male roles will be played as men. Not women pretending to be men. Women being men.

We are committed to casting a diverse company. We are seeking actresses of all cultures, ages, sizes and body types, disabled and non-disabled. All actresses must have a STRONG comic ability, and must be capable of being very physical on stage. This is especially true of the actresses who will play the male roles as they will need to embrace and commit to this hyper-masculine world both physically and vocally. We are interested in women who can channel a very masculine energy and swagger, walk, talk and dress like a man. Height is a major plus and we are interested in all “real world” body types.

This production will also include a large musical element. Singing is a plus, particularly where noted. There will also be an onstage band of actor/musicians and are especially interested in the following instruments – accordion, woodwinds, brass, double bass and fiddle.

Padua, it’s a man’s world. Think Wall Street in its hedonistic heyday. Women are a commodity to be traded on the open market and the more submissive the better. Signor Baptista is the Kingpin who rules it all with an iron fist, controlling everyone around him except, of course, for his two feisty daughters.

SEEKING:

BAPTISTA:
50+. Tough, uncompromising and easy with his power. He is a “dapper don” who controls the business empire around him with complete ease. Although he has the world in the palm of his hand he is completely unable to corral his two wild and headstrong daughters. Their whims and hobbies are costing him a small fortune and if he doesn’t get them both married off soon their market value will start to plummet. This is a role for an actress with great comic skills.

BIANCA:
30’s. Actually a woman. Kate’s younger sister. Although she doesn’t share her sister’s fury at the world or scorn for all men, she is nobody’s ingénue and is opinionated, funny and extremely strong willed. She doesn’t hesitate to throw all of her suitors out when they annoy her and she instantly sees through their bullshit. She’ll keep them around while they amuse her but not a moment longer. She knows what she wants in life and isn’t afraid to go after it. We are looking for an actress who is also a very confident singer as she will be part of a vocal trio with Kate and The Widow.

GREMIO:
50+. A suitor to Bianca. Rich and flashy with his money. He’s not really a contender but in a world where marriage is just a business transaction, who says money can’t buy everything. He’s completely undeterred by his younger competition and sets out to win Bianca’s love or, at the very least, buy it. A great role for a character actress.

LUCENTIO:
20’s. A goofily handsome young man who has come to Padua to seek his fortune. He’s not looking for a wife but sees Bianca and immediately falls head over heels. Hugely inventive and a natural prankster, he disguises himself as a teacher of philosophy and talks his way into Baptista’s household to be Bianca’s tutor. His convoluted scheme is in danger of unravelling when his own father arrives in town unexpectedly.

HORTENSIO:
30+. Petruchio’s best friend and wingman. Forever destined to be the second banana. He accompanies his friend on his mission to find a wife and, just like everyone else, he is smitten with Bianca. A bit of a jock who tries, without much success, to disguise himself as a refined and elegant music teacher. Naïve and not very self-aware. We are particularly interested in actresses who can sing and accompany themselves on a stringed instrument (please specify in submission). Another role for a skilled comedic actress.

TRANIO:
30+. Lucentio’s servant. Quick, smart and energy to burn. He is the real mastermind and engine behind the elaborate charade that comes precariously close to undoing them all. He disguises himself as his boss, passing as someone powerful and well heeled, and perhaps begins to enjoy his suddenly elevated status a little too much. He’s a consummate showman who is always at his best when he has an audience. A great comic role for an actress who delights in playing working class characters pretending to be posh.

GRUMIO:
30+. Petruchio’s servant and sidekick. He’s a total screw up. Definitely not the smartest guy around but he gets by on a mix of persistence, charm and irrepressibility. He may get knocked down but he’ll jump right up and get back into the game. Another role for an actress with a clown’s spirit.

VINCENTIO:
50+. Lucentio’s father. A businessman who comes to Padua for a little R&R. He’s enjoying his vacation until he inadvertently becomes swept up in the screwball craziness of the plot hatched by his son and Tranio.

BIONDELLO:
20’s. Little more than a kid, he tags along with Lucentio and his entourage. He is their gopher. Constantly being sent on errands and wild goose chases. Luckily he has boundless energy.

WIDOW:
Late 30’s+. Actually a woman. Sexy and vibrant. She has recently lost her husband but is still a relatively young woman who is determined to live her life to the fullest. No widow’s weeds for her, instead she is checking out any eligible bachelors who come her way. We are looking for an actress who is also a very confident singer as she will be part of a vocal trio with Kate and Bianca.

AEA ACTOR/MUSICIANS:
30’s - 50’s. The MALE townspeople of Padua. To play roles including TAILOR, PEDANT, HABERDASHER etc. We are aggressively seeking character actresses who play instruments extremely well (accordion, woodwinds, brass, double bass and fiddle), as they will form the nucleus of our on stage band. Height, girth and physical extremity of all kinds are a plus.

The following roles are CAST:

PETRUCHIO: JANET McTEER

KATE: CUSH JUMBO
